Michael David Vanzandt is a U.S. Air Force Veteran who went missing in Hermosa Beach, California on March 5, 2016. Michael Vanzandt was last seen by his friends when he left the waiting line to American Junkie (68 Pier Plaza) and walked toward Roberts Liquor (72 Pier Plaza) at about 10:15 p.m. on March 5, 2016. His friends were unable to make contact with him via cell phone shortly after he walked away and had made more than 20 calls to his cell phone. According to family, it has been confirmed that Michael Vanzandt entered Roberts Liquor at around 10:15 p.m., but did not purchase anything. Security camera footage then shows Michael Vanzandt walking the plaza for a short during which time they are assuming that he was looking for his friends. Michael Vanzandt reentered Roberts Liquor, but it is unknown at this time if he made any purchases. Michael Vanzandt was last seen on security cameras at 11:00 p.m. in the plaza and it appears he was heading away from the pier.

Where is this video of the group? Is this just bad reporting or is there a video?

Air Force veteran and father of 3 missing from Hermosa Beach

Michael David Vanzandt, 36, of Lancaster was standing in line with friends outside the American Junkie gastro pub about 10:15 p.m. Saturday when he began walking toward a nearby liquor store, Roberts Liquor, according to the Hermosa Beach Police Department.

Vanzandt has not been seen or heard from since. Friends told police that they lost contact with his cellphone shortly after he was last seen, and family members reported him missing on Sunday.

“It’s not necessarily suspicious circumstances, like foul play, but the fact that he’s been gone so long,” Hermosa Beach Sgt. Robert Higgins said. “He is a father, and obviously it’s concerning for him to disappear for this much time.”

This could be so many things. Thinking out loud?
    Did MV meet foul play?
Did he drink too much and fall?
Did he purposely walk away from his family?

Michael Vanzandt was last seen the evening of March 5, 2016 while out with friends in downtown Hermosa Beach, California. Vanzandt, 36, of Lancaster was standing in line with friends outside the American Junkie gastropub at about 10:15 p.m. when he began walking toward a nearby liquor store. He has not been seen or heard from since. The Air Force veteran, and father of three, was going through a divorce, but family members said there were absolutely no red flags in his personal life that would have led to his disappearance. Because he is an avid swimmer, they fear he may have headed towards the water for a late night dip. However, none of Michael’s belongings were found on the beach. Authorities say the case is still active and ongoing. If you have any information regarding Michael’s case, please call the Hermosa Beach Police Department at (310) 318-0360.

New video shows missing father's final moments on Hermosa Beach Pier

Out for a night at the Hermosa Beach Pier. He walked into the dark and vanished. CBS Los Angeles reports there is a major new effort to help find the Iraq War veteran and father of three.

CBS Los Angeles has obtained video never seen before of his final moments at that pier. Grainy clips from a security camera at the last moments Michael VanZandt was seen alive.

The 36-year-old can be seen leaving a bar near the Hermosa Pier and going next door to an ATM.

Later he's seen walking toward the beach and then vanishes. He hasn't been since March 2016.

Just watched Michael's episode on Disappeared.
    So sad. :(

He and his friends were waiting in line to get into a bar. Michael went to the liquor store to use the bathroom but could not. He left the liquor store presumably to look for another location to use the bathroom.
While Michael is gone, his friends decide they don't want to wait in line anymore and go to another bar. They texted and called Michael that they had left. But his phone was off/dead/not working (seen in video).
Over the next several hours, his friends continue to bar hop while trying to reach him. He continues to wander around looking for them. Several times they come within seconds of crossing paths. But they do not.
At one point toward the end of the night, Michael is seen walking off alone in the direction of the beach. It is not known if he went there for sure. He did have a history of drunk swimming. His brother believes this is the fate Michael met.

Six years of Dateline's Missing in America: 134 still missing

Dateline NBC's social and digital series 'Missing in America' began on December 5, 2013, following a question the night before to our Facebook community, "Do you know anyone who has simply vanished?" The response was overwhelming. Since that first post, every week we have featured the story of a different missing person brought to our attention by a member of our social communities.

On this sixth anniversary of the series, approximately 40% of those we have featured are still missing.

    Michael Vanzandt
