Vermont State Police searching for missing teen girl, thought to be traveling with known sex offender

Vermont authorities are searching for a missing teen girl who they say may be living with a known sex offender.

16-year-old Mickayla Lozell was first reported missing on June 4th, after she left her mother's residence in Alburgh, Vermont, and did not return.

Lozell's mother, who reported her missing, said that her daughter had left the house on foot, carrying a backpack.

Though she was living with her mother at the time of her disappearance, Lozell is currently technically in the custody of the Vermont Department for Children and Families.

Police believe Lozell may be in the custody of 47-year-old William Smith, who is listed by state records as a Level 2 Sex Offender.

In the weeks prior to her disappearance Lozell had become acquainted with Smith, according to authorities.

Smith has one prior conviction in 1999 for sexual assault, but is not considered a high risk offender. However, police say he is out of compliance with the state Sex Offender Registry and that investigators are pursuing an arrest warrant for non-compliance.

Smith currently has no known permanent address, but officials believe he and Lozell may be in New Hampshire together--possibly in the vicinity of Concord or Hampton Beach.

Lozell reportedly called a friend on Tuesday, telling them that she was okay and that she was in New Hampshire.

Smith is believed to be traveling in a gold Dodge Intrepid with the Vermont license plate of "GST 814." Anyone who sees the car or Smith and Lozell have been encouraged to contact police immediately.
