Pennsylvania girl, 2, missing in bizarre abduction case

Police are investigating a bizarre kidnapping case in Pennsylvania.

Authorities have issued an Amber alert for the missing toddler, and a woman has been charged in the little girl’s disappearance.

It’s been an incredibly emotional and difficult couple of days for Taji Walsh, who just wants to know where her granddaughter Nalani Johnson is.

“I just float through my day,” Taji Walsh said. “I don’t know. I try not to think because that takes me to a place where I don’t, I don’t really want to go.”

The toddler disappeared Saturday evening after her dad got out of a car driven by Sharena Nancy on Bryant Drive in Penn Hills.

According to the criminal complaint, when he went to get Nalani out of her car seat, Nancy took off with the child still inside the car.

An Amber alert went out and two and a half hours later, Nancy was pulled over on Rodey Road in Penn Hills, but Nalani and the car seat were nowhere to be found.

According to court documents, Nancy told investigators she sold the toddler for $10,000, something she claims was set up by Nalani’s father.

“Everybody’s losing sleep over this,” Nalani’s father, Paul Johnson, said. “Money is being put toward this as a reward for her return safely. We just want our baby back home.”

Nancy claims she gave the toddler to two women in a silver SUV with out-of-state license plates parked on the side of the road.

Investigators said they have found no evidence of the SUV or the transfer of the little girl.

Nalani’s grandmother and father aren’t commenting on the investigation, but are actively searching for the child.

“She’s a sweet child,” Walsh said. “I think her laugh and she run around from you and, we just want her to come back home.”

Driver Charged in Missing Pennsylvania Toddler Case Says Child was Sold for $10,000, Police Say

A woman is in custody and a toddler is missing from Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, after the child’s father said a rideshare driver abducted his daughter on Saturday evening, according to police documents and a news release.

Paul Johnson said he was riding in a car with Lyft and Uber stickers with his daughter and a friend, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Allegheny County police.

Johnson said that when he got out of the car and went to get his daughter out of the car seat, the driver drove away with the toddler, the complaint said. The complaint didn’t identify the child, but a police news release said she is named Nalani.

Johnson told detectives he tried calling the driver’s cellphone multiple times but she never picked up, so he called 911 around 5 p.m. ET.

Police arrested driver Sharena Nancy, 25, in the vehicle during a traffic stop around 7:30 p.m. ET, but did not find the child inside, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Nancy told detectives that Johnson sold the child to an individual for $10,000 and asked her to complete the dropoff.

Nancy said he showed her a photo of a black woman she was supposed to meet and asked her to drive the toddler “20 minutes” from a gas station in Monroeville along US Route 22 to meet the woman, the complaint says.

Nancy said she was told the woman would then “flag” her down and Nancy was to turn over the toddler, the complaint says.

Nancy told detectives she encountered a silver SUV with out-of-state plates parked on the side of the road and did as she had been instructed — passing the toddler and the carseat over to a woman standing next to the car and then driving off. Nancy told police she also saw a second woman inside the SUV.

Nancy said she then drove around, smoked cigarettes and talked on the phone with her husband, the complaint said.

Nancy, who is being held without bail at the Allegheny County jail, was arraigned on Monday after being charged with kidnapping of a minor, interference with custody of children and concealment of whereabouts of a child. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 16.

CNN was unable to identify or reach an attorney for Nancy.

Nalani’s grandmother, Taji Walsh, told CNN affiliate KDKA that Nancy’s account of the events is not true. Her son, whom she calls “PJ,” is Nalani’s father.

“If the police felt that PJ was in any way involved, he wouldn’t be walking freely, he’d be locked somewhere up like she is,” she said.

The police press release said Nalani is 2 years old, but the website for The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, missingkids.org, said she’s 23 months old, with her second birthday on September 15. She’s about 3 feet tall and weighs about 30 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, according to missingkids.org.

Representatives of Uber did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Dana Davis, a communications manager for Lyft, told CNN that while this incident did not happen on the Lyft platform, they have banned Nancy from driving with Lyft, adding that the allegations were “deeply disturbing.”

Allegheny Co. Police: Missing Girl’s Father, Kidnapping Suspect Romantically Linked

Allegheny County Police say the father of a missing Penn Hills toddler and the woman charged with kidnapping her were in a romantic relationship.

Allegheny County Police Superintendent Coleman McDonough held a news conference Tuesday afternoon with FBI Pittsburgh officials and 2-year-old Nalani Johnson’s grandmother.

During the news conference, McDonough said Nalani and her father, Paul Johnson, were not in Sharena Nancy’s vehicle for an arbitrary Uber or Lyft ride.

“Sharena Nancy and Paul Johnson became acquainted intermittently over the last few months, so they were known to each other,” McDonough said. “They were friends, they were in the beginnings of an intermittent romantic relationship.”

McDonough says the pair spent several hours together Saturday afternoon.

“We believe that an argument ensued at approximately 5 p.m. or so. Mr. Johnson and Mr. [Justin] Rouse (Johnson’s friend) exited the vehicle with the intention of taking Nalani with them when Ms. Nancy pulled away with the child in the vehicle,” said McDonough.

Police say they have one story from Johnson and another from Nancy, which they are working to verify.

“A lot of our investigation is trying to corroborate one version with the other,” said McDonough.

So this woman kills a 2-year-old child because she's mad at her father?

The DA spoke of individuals involved. I think there might be more arrests forthcoming. Something is very off with this story, IMO.

Court Paperwork: Nalani Johnson’s Mother Filed For PFA Against Girl’s Father

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The mother of Nalani Johnson filed for a Protection from Abuse Order from the girl’s father, Paul Johnson, earlier this year.

KDKA’s Meghan Schiller has confirmed through court paperwork that Nalani’s mother, Gladys Duarte, filed the temporary PFA on April 15, 2019.

    [...]

In the petition, the mother of Nalani Johnson alleges that the little girl’s father, Paul Johnson:

    1) Tampered with her car causing an accident
    2) Ripped her pictures off the walls, cleaned out her fridge, stole her shoes and XBOX
    3) Held a gun up to his head, threatening to kill himself, while the little girl was in the backseat
    4) Admitted to almost killing Nalani
    5) Threatened to kill the mother and “anyone I was with.”
    6) Pulled a gun on the mother’s sister who was trying to protect the mother and little girl from him

I wonder how dense that area was that she was left in. Was it a popular park with a lot of foot traffic? Surely Nalani was crying and scared. This story makes me very angry.

Death of child who was reported kidnapped ruled homicide

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office released a statement Thursday that said: "Although the cause and manner of death for Nalani Johnson are pending further test results by the Indiana County Coroner, the expectation is that the manner of death will be homicide."

Officials involved in the investigation met Wednesday afternoon to discuss the details of the case and how to proceed moving forward.

According to the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office, all charges resulting from Johnson's death will be prosecuted in Allegheny County, with the Indiana County District Attorney's Office "having a significant partnership role in the prosecution."

Johnson, who was to turn 2 years old this month, was found Tuesday in a park about 37 miles east of Penn Hills, where authorities allege the girl was kidnapped Saturday evening.

There were no visible signs of trauma.

Sharena Islam Nancy, who authorities say had been romantically involved with the child's father, remains in custody in Allegheny County on charges of kidnapping of a minor, custodial interference and concealment of the whereabouts of a child, all felonies.

No one has been charged in Nalani's death.

Penn Hills toddler death ruled homicide; DA says no signs of trauma

Nalani Johnson's body was found still buckled in her car seat in an Indiana County park

When a deputy coroner and his cadaver dog found Nalani Johnson on Tuesday afternoon in Indiana County, she was still buckled in to her car seat.

Although there were no signs of trauma on her body, it is possible, Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. said Wednesday, that the toddler died Saturday -- the day she was kidnapped from Penn Hills.

As directed by the Indiana County coroner, Nalani's autopsy was performed Wednesday by a contracted forensic pathologist, who ruled that the manner of death was homicide. But the physician will not give a cause of death until he reviews the toddler's medical records and runs a few more tests, Mr. Zappala said.

That could take up to five weeks.
