He was arrested early Monday morning near the Airdrie acreage that has been at the centre of the investigation. The acreage belongs to his parents and was the site of police investigation in 1992 that led to charges of drug trafficking and possession of stolen property after Garland was caught making amphetamines.

A document from the Tax Court of Canada indicates Garland was later discovered living under the stolen identity of a 14-year-old car crash victim from Cardston, Alta.

Garland is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

It's been previously reported that Garland has connections to the Liknes family. His sister, Patti Garland, is in a common-law relationship with Alvin Liknes's son.

I hadn't heard of this case before and found this article. Are the victims still missing?

There have been no bodies found, however, LE is confident they have evidence of their deaths. Douglas Garland was charged with 2 counts of First Degree Murder in the deaths of KL and AL, and one count of Second Degree Murder in the death of NO.

Cherri Hodgens told attendees her best friend Kathy was a strong and proud Calgarian who fell in love with Alvin almost the moment she laid eyes on him when he and Kathy were co-workers.
“You could not help but to like her, even if only knew her for five minutes,” she said, adding that Kathy would have been thrilled to see so many paying tribute to her memory.
In contrast, Alvin was remembered as a humble, thoughtful man who preferred life in the background.
Alvin’s nephew, Calvin Ellerby, said his uncle would have been embarrassed at all of the attention.
“Alvin was a private guy,” he said.
“To hear all of these stories about him, he would have been bashful.”
Born northeast of Calgary in Coronation, the oil and gas businessman was remembered as a devoted family man who was looking forward to his impending retirement to Mexico.

They sound like a lovely couple! If the accused is indeed guilty, I hope they throw the book at him!!!

There was talk of a patent dispute between the accused and KL in the past. There is also some interesting background if you look deeply enough.

Given the preliminary hearing is Tuesday, I would expect some details to come out soon. There will most likely be a publication ban on the evidence, but some of the history should come to light.

So Garland has mental issues coupled with drug abuse. :sigh: A ticking time bomb.

There was drug manufacturing in his past, but whether he was using isn't clear.

There was mention of ADHD in a court judgement, and perhaps a breakdown of some sort early in his post secondary education.

Blood-stained furniture, drag marks and a bloodied dumbbell found inside the home of Alvin and Kathy Liknes led police to conclude within the first hours of their investigation that someone had likely killed the missing couple and their five-year-old grandson, Nathan O’Brien.

The details are in an affidavit filed in provincial court by a Calgary police homicide detective on June 30, 2014 — the day Jennifer O’Brien stumbled on the bloody scene at her parents’ home on 38A Avenue S.W. and called police.

Oh my gosh, I remember this case. So glad to see LE is moving forward and actually charged Garland.

And from reading above, I see they still haven't found the victims :( I hope they are found soon.

Such a sweet looking child, with some real spirit in him, that Nathan.

    So sad.

You always do the nicest pictures, She. Thanks. It helps to make the victims real and I think that is important on a bunch of different levels.

Nathan O'Brien Superhero Sports Decathlon to honour Calgary boy's memory

He was a happy little boy who loved playing soccer, hockey and dressing up as any one of a number of super heroes.

Next weekend, Aug. 19-21, the spirit of Nathan O’Brien will shine once again at the second annual Nathan O’Brien Superhero Sports Decathlon at Springbank Park For All Seasons.

“It’s an opportunity for kids to come out and try a number of sports,” says Jennifer O’Brien, Nathan’s mother.

“It’s a great day for kids — all of Nathan’s friends came out last year and loved it, so I know Nathan would.”

Jury selection underway for Douglas Garland, accused triple murderer in Nathan O’Brien case

Hundreds of people were at the Calgary Courts Centre Wednesday for jury selection in the high-profile deaths of a five-year-old Calgary boy and his grandparents.

Due to the high-profile nature of the case, jury selection is being conducted through what is referred to as “challenge for a cause.” The process involves prospective jurors being asked a set of questions designed to expose potential bias due to the publicity the case has received.

In addition, two extra jurors will be chosen in order to protect against a mistrial in the event that any jurors drop out.

Three days have been set aside to choose the jury.

The jury trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 16 and continue for five weeks.

Final arguments set for Douglas Garland murder trial

Jurors in the triple-murder trial of Douglas Garland are scheduled to hear final arguments Monday from Crown and defence lawyers.

Lead prosecutor Shane Parker and defence counsel Kim Ross will detail their opposing theories on whether Garland plotted the murders of Kathy and Alvin Liknes before kidnapping them and their grandson from the couple’s Calgary home and killing them at his farm.

If Parker sticks to the theory his co-prosecutor, Vicki Faulkner, outlined in her opening address four weeks ago, he’ll argue Garland held a years-long grudge against the grandfather which culminated in a murderous plot.

That grudge was over an oilfield pump for which Alvin Liknes applied for a patent under his name. A decade ago, Garland did some work on the pump.

The Crown’s case, which unfolded over four weeks of evidence, focused on a hard drive found hidden in the ceiling of the basement in the Airdrie farm home Garland shared with his elderly parents.

On it, police found evidence the main user of the hard drive spent months researching the couple as well as ways to disable and kill people.

There were also “gore” photos of dead and dismembered bodies, along with sexually graphic images of women clad in adult diapers, many of them bound as well.

Investigators found numerous restraints and handcuffs on the Garland property during an extensive search of the 16-hectare farm once he became the main suspect.

Kathy, 53, and Alvin Liknes, 66, disappeared from their Parkhill home in southwest Calgary, along with their five-year-old grandson, Nathan O’Brien, the morning of June 30, 2014.

The boy had been left at the residence the previous evening for a sleepover, by his mother, Jennifer.

When the mom arrived the next morning, she found a bloody scene and no sign of the three relatives. Their bodies have never been found.
