    What happened to Newton Whidden?

    By LEE WILLIAMS
    Jul 31, 2013 at 2:39 PM

The 85-year-old Sarasota County resident was last seen Aug. 20.

Linda Oelschlaeger wears her father's Army dogtags around her neck every day, along with his lucky penny.

It is one of the ways she strives to keep his memory alive.

Newton Whidden disappeared almost a year ago, and time has not made the uncertainty or the anguish any easier.

“The more time that goes by, the harder it gets. You'd think it would be the opposite,” she said. “I miss him. Not knowing — it's a daily nightmare.”

Whidden, 85, was last seen Aug. 20.

His white van was found in a rural area outside the city of Okeechobee, more than 100 miles east of Sarasota.

Now, Oelschlaeger believes perhaps too much attention was focused on Okeechobee County. She hopes there may be clues in Sarasota County.

On the day he disappeared, Whidden visited Sam's Club, Home Depot and a Sarasota pharmacy, where his cellphone was later found.

Oelschlaeger hopes someone will remember seeing him in one of these stores, especially if he was confronted by someone or involved in an altercation.

She is hoping investigators will be able to find clues in surveillance videos from these stores.

“Someone has got to remember him,” Oelschlaeger said. “I am keeping hope alive.”

Whidden, who also goes by “W.H.” or “Newt” was in very good health, although he has some “confusion” because of his age, his family has said.

An only child, Oelschlaeger carries the burden of finding her father mostly by herself, along with support from her husband.

“I try not to burden my friends and acquaintances with my thoughts,” she said. “I think I see him or his white van all the time, but it's not him.”

The rural swampy area where Whidden's vehicle was found has been searched six times by law enforcement, a private search group and by Whidden's family.

Law enforcement and volunteers used ATVs, horses, helicopters and other vehicles. No trace was ever found.

Crime scene investigators processed Whidden's van, but found nothing revelatory. The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office closed their investigation, leaving the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office as the sole investigative agency.

“It's still an active case,” said Sarasota County sheriff's spokeswoman Wendy Rose. “Whenever we get any information, we follow it up. We've retraced his last steps, followed every possible lead — even the suggestion of a possible lead. We're still dedicated to finding him.”

Investigators found no evidence of a crime in Whidden's home, Rose said.

Nothing looked suspicions in his van, although his keys and wallet were not found.

Whidden is still listed as a “Silver Alert” by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and also is featured on a federal missing persons website, Rose said.

“The family is obviously racking their brains. Every time they call the detectives we follow up every possibility, but at this point, there's nothing solid to go on,” Rose said. “He is still considered a missing person.”

Whidden should be carrying a wallet, identification and a checkbook.

Oelschlaeger said her father is an amateur historian with a passion for Old Florida, and could be drawn to areas of historical interest, such as cemeteries or historical sites.

She also described him as an outdoorsman.

Whidden is 5-foot-9, weighs 130 pounds and has white hair and hazel eyes. His right pinky finger is deformed. He uses reading glasses.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1973, and sold real estate in Sarasota.

His daughter said he is always looking for lumber or other building supplies because he is active in Habitat for Humanity.

Anyone with information about Whidden's disappearance is asked to call Sarasota Sheriff's Detective Adam Kaskey at (941) 861-4900.
