NYC officer shot, killed while sitting in police car

of New York, July 5, 2017

An on-duty New York City police officer was killed early Wednesday after a gunman walked up to her patrol vehicle and fired shots through the window, authorities said.

Officer Miosotis Familia, a 12-year veteran assigned to the New York City Police Department's 46th Precinct's Anti-Crime unit, was taken to a Bronx hospital where she was pronounced dead at 3:37 a.m. ET. She was 48 years old, according to police sources.

At a press conference Wednesday morning, New York City Police Department Commissioner James P. O'Neill said Familia had been shot in the head in an "unprovoked attack" while sitting with her partner in a marked police command vehicle on the corner of Morris Avenue and East 183 Street around 12:30 a.m. ET. O'Neill told reporters the vehicle had been parked there since March due to increased gang activity in the area.

Familia's partner radioed for assistance, while other uniformed officers chased after the suspect, who took off on foot. As the officers confronted the suspect, he drew a revolver and the officers shot and killed him, according to O'Neill.

was fatally shot, July 4, 2017.

Police sources told ABC News that surveillance footage recovered from the scene show the suspect "purposefully" walking up to the command vehicle and firing through the passenger's side window. Familia was writing in her memo book at the time, indicating she may not have seen the suspect approach the vehicle, the sources said.

These three officers were not lost in the line of duty; however, I want to honor them for their service as they have all passed away this month. Most important for me is to honor my good friend John who not only served his community for 35 years, but also served our country in the USMC prior to joining the Sheriff's' Department. RIP Gentlemen and Thank You for your service!

Final goodbye: Dep. Jacob Pickett is laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery
INDIANAPOLIS -- Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett was buried Friday at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. The procession that brought him there took a 52-mile journey from Connection Pointe Christian Church in Brownsburg, Ind.

Dep. Pickett's final resting place is in the Heroes of Public Safety section. The sounds of bag pipes filled the air as the hearse neared his gravesite.

Deputy Jacob Pickett's K-9 stops alone at his casket, wags his tail to honor his fallen partner
Deputy Jacob Pickett is survived by not only his two young boys and wife, but by his K-9 partner, Brik, who was by his side on the day he was fatally shot.

Brik honored his fallen partner at his funeral by stopping, alone, in front of Deputy Pickett's casket.

And as a dog would, he wagged his tail, as a final salute to a man with which he had an unbreakable bond.

Brik followed a K-9-only procession, going by Deputy Pickett's casket to pay their last respects for a fall comrade.
