    By Katherine Lam

The Orlando police officer, who was not identified, was responding to a domestic violence call at the Westbrook Apartments near Universal Studios around 11:45 p.m. Sunday when the suspect opened fire. The officer was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery.

“It is a very serious, significant injury,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said at a news conference Monday. “He is expected to survive."

The suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment and took four children — ages 1, 7, 10 and 12 — as hostages, Mina said.

    JUNE 11, 2018 9:45 AM

Orlando police are still in a standoff with the man suspected of shooting an officer overnight at the Westbrook Apartments near Universal Orlando, before barricading himself inside an apartment with four young children as hostages.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Orlando police Chief John Mina told reporters just before 9 a.m. that the officer was expected to live.

“It is a very serious, significant injury,” Mina said. “He is expected to survive.”

Mina said the shooting happened after officers responded at about 11:45 p.m. to a woman who reported being battered by her boyfriend. While trying to arrest the suspect, gunfire was exchanged and the officer was shot.

From what I can find in MSM, the hostage situation is still ongoing. Per the LE spokesman in the video, they have attempted to make contact with suspect - he answered and then hung up phone a couple of times.

Man who allegedly shot police officer in the eye accused of taking 4 kids hostage in Orlando
    Jun 11, 2018, 1:32 PM ET

An armed suspect has barricaded himself in an Orlando, Florida, apartment with four children, including a 1-year-old, since Monday morning after he allegedly shot and wounded an officer responding to a domestic violence call, authorities said.

The wounded officer suffered a "very serious and significant injury" and underwent surgery this morning at Orlando Regional Medical Center, city Police Chief John Mina said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was shot in the eye when the gunman fired through the door from inside the apartment when he and other officers approached the unit, ABC Orlando affiliate WFTV reported, citing police and fire department sources.

The shooting broke out about 11:45 p.m. Sunday and police negotiators were still trying to get the barricaded man to give up peacefully as a SWAT team surrounded the Westbrook apartment complex. The standoff has now stretched into Monday afternoon, more than 12 hours after it began.

Gunman holding 4 kids hostage in Florida standoff

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man believed to have shot a police officer responding to a report of a domestic dispute at an apartment complex in Orlando, Florida, barricaded himself in an apartment with four children in an early-morning standoff that was still unresolved Monday afternoon.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said the officer was expected to live despite "very significant injuries."

Officers were called to the Westbrook Apartments near the Universal Orlando Resort theme park resort late Sunday by a woman who said her boyfriend had beaten her. When officers arrived at the apartment, gunfire was exchanged, hitting the officer, Mina said. The police chief said he doesn't know if the man was shot.

Police Chief John Mina said Monday that the officer, Kevin Valencia, is recovering after surgery and remains in critical condition, but is expected to survive.

More than 14 hours after Valencia was shot, the children, who police say are ages 1, 7, 10 and 12, remain inside the apartment with 35-year-old Gary Lindsey Jr., Mina said.

The police chief said he doesn't know if Lindsey was shot but said they have been in contact with him several times and that Lindsey has not threatened to harm the children. Two of the children are Lindsey's and two are his girlfriend's, police said.

UPDATE: Slight correction on hostage ages. They are 1, 6, 10 and 11 years old. Lindsey remains barricaded in the apartment with the four young hostages. We are urging him to release the children unharmed and help us bring this situation to a safe and peaceful resolution.

Officer Valencia's wife speaks during a news conference at the link below. It is so heartbreaking seeing what the poor woman is going through. Her husband is still in a coma. They've known each other since they were 12. First gf/bf each them had.

'This man is everything to me': Wife of Orlando cop wounded in deadly hostage situation
    Jun 13, 2018, 7:37 PM ET

Meghan Valencia -- the wife of Officer Kevin Valencia and the mother of his two sons, one 5 years old and the other 8 months old -- left his bedside at Orlando Regional Medical Center briefly to tell the world "my husband is a true, true hero."
Walter Benenati, an attorney for the children's mother, Ciara Lopez, identified the victims on Wednesday as Irayan Pluth, 12; Lillia Pluth, 10; Aidan Lindsey, 6; and 22-month-old Dove Lindsey.

"The mother is just in complete shock," Benenati told ABC News. "Right now she is angry and that will turn to grief that nobody can even fathom."

He said he spoke to the mother today and quoted her saying, "I am heartbroken and feel completely alone."

Officer Talmon Hall was with Valencia when he was shot and said Valencia's "primary concern was for the well-being of those four children."

"He wanted to be the first to bring the children out of the house and he wanted to be the first to apprehend the bad guy," said Hall, sitting next to Meghan Valencia during the news conference.

Orlando police officer breathing on his own after being shot in the head, authorities say

The Orlando police officer who was shot in the head and critically injured nearly two weeks ago is breathing on his own, a police spokesperson confirmed.

Officer Kevin Valencia, 27, was shot while responding to a domestic-violence call at a west-Orlando apartment complex on June 11. His shooting was the catalyst for a standoff that ended when Gary Wayne Lindsey Jr killed four children before turning the gun on himself.
