Dunn lived in Las Vegas, Nevada until 1979. Early that year, she and a female companion traveled to San Diego, California. The two women planned to be prostitutes and were accompanied by two men, one of whom was their pimp. Dunn disappeared sometime in April 1979 and has never been heard from again. Her female friend later returned to Las Vegas without her. Few details are available in her case, but Dunn is considered to be missing under suspicious circumstances and foul play is suspected.

I can't even imagine planning to be a prostitute. :tears:

I've been told that there are a lot of bodies out there in the desert. @Sunburst , what is your take on this case?

  4. I am a licensed Investigator in California and was retained in 1997 to investigate the disappearance of Rebecca Jean Dunn and worked all leads to a dead end. I traveled to Pennsylvania and interviewed her traveling partner without developing any further information as to her status or whereabouts. I interviewed her former pimp without developing any further information as to her status or whereabouts. I went to Las Vegas and spent days reviewing the case reports regarding hundreds of unidentified Jane Doe's found in the Las Vegas area and then reviewed other cases wherein the remains were found in the State of Nevada. I contacted every coroner's office in the counties surrounding the San Francisco Bay area and reviewed the Jane Doe cases without locating her. I had a forensic anthropologist flown to the bay area and she examined several questionable remains without a positive result.

I did discover however that Rebecca Dunn was the victim of an armed attempted kidnapping by a subject impersonating a police officer on April 4, 1979 in Oakland, CA. It is important to note Rebecca Dunn was observed and contacted DAILY by vice officers from the Oakland Police Department before and after the attempted kidnapping in the same area at or near 35th and San Pablo in Oakland; however, on the day the suspect was released from jail, Rebecca Dunn disappeared and was never heard from again. It is also important to note that after the suspect was arrested, Rebecca Dunn failed to appear and or cooperate with his prosecution and he eventually plead to a lessor charge and served a short jail sentence.

It further appears the suspect moved very shortly after his release from jail in Oakland to the Los Angeles area where soon after he was arrested by the FBI for impersonating an IRS Agent to collect a debt. At about this time he was also arrested (twice) for the felonious assault of prostitutes in the Venice area of Los Angeles. The suspect served time in Federal prison for the impersonation and little or no time for the two assaults on the prostitutes.

I have never stopped looking for Rebecca and will continue my search. Please note there is absolutely NO evidence that I've seen or know of that places Rebecca Jean Dunn at any time of her life, especially as a prostitute, in San Diego, California. I believe that I know how this information began; however, I cannot divulge that information without compromising my continued investigation. I fully appreciate the value of these websites and hope this information will serve to benefit not only Rebecca Jean Dunn, but all the missing. I have entered Rebecca Jean Dunn's biographical information, the circumstances of her disappearance, and her dental charts into the California DOJ (MUPS) system. Las Vegas Police Department is to my knowledge the source investigating agency regarding her disappearance as the missing persons report was initially taken there. If anyone has further information, please respond.

Kimster, my apologies. I just now saw your question to me in your post listed above.

Here is my take (actually several). It is a fact that in the 1970's, Las Vegas was still under the control of the mob. The Mafia, the mob, and a group of Mormon elders owned the casinos and were so entangled that it was impossible to determine who owned what casino. The FBI began infiltrating and some mob figures became informants. Mob figures began leaving Vegas around 1976-77, when it became clear the Vegas of the future would be making money in the then new concept of "MEGARESORT", but it wasn't until the mid 80's that mob figures had all cleared out.

To this day, they are still finding human remains in the desert around Las Vegas, including a Jane Doe who was found in a cave. Rebecca's remains may be in an as yet unexplored cave. There are thousands of abandoned mines/mine shafts all over the state as well. Near Las Vegas is a very large lake-Lake Mead. There is a WW 2 era airplane in the lake, as well as several sunken towns that were flooded deliberately during dam construction. The lake is considered to be one of the top diving spots in the world.

Rebecca has been ruled out as Eldorado Jane Doe.

For 2018, Meaghan is in the process of giving CharleyProject a whole new look, Rebecca's new CP page is here: http://charleyproject.org/case/rebecca-jean-dunn

Having said all that, here are my takes on what could have happened. Not in any order of likelihood/ priority, just thinking aloud. IIRC, the most likely scenario is that she was killed by her stalker (s) on the day she disappeared. If she was working as a prostitute:

1.) Rebecca got in an argument with one of her travelling companions.
2.) Rebecca was killed by a john.
    3. Rebecca's remains, if in Nevada, are as yet undiscovered in the desert, a cave, a mine/mine shaft, or in Lake Mead. The Arizona desert is a short drive away.
4.) Rebecca was sold to or left with another pimp. Johns like seeing new faces.
    5) IMHO, it is not a coincidence that the fake officer was released and Rebecca disappeared the same day. There is a bay near Oakland.
6 ) Rebecca changed her mind about her lifestyle choice and left for another part of the country (unlikely, but maybe....)
7.) Rebecca fled, fearing for her safety, upon learning that the fake officer had been released from prison. (unlikely). Reading between the lines, it sounds like she was going to testify against him in court.
8.) Rebecca found out she was pregnant and left.
    9) Back then it was not that hard to cross into Canada. Women who choose that lifestyle travel to different cities, for scenario # 4 listed above.

ALL of the above are MOO and MOO only.

If Rebecca and her friend were trying to find work in a brothel, Nye County would be the closest county that had legal brothels (one county over from Las Vegas-Clark County) IIRC, prostitution was made illegal in Clark County as of 1971, not that that stopped it from occurring. In that line of work, a young, pretty woman could make a lot of money very quickly.

It is a line of work that can pay for college, rent, a car. It is legal in the rural Nevada counties.

Fascinating! Thank you so much for coming here to explain what you discovered. If we were able to solve this case based on probability and other cases followed that have a pattern, I would bet that the suspect who was released has something to do with her disappearance. Do you know what that suspect has been doing since? Any assaults?

Thank you so much for weighing in! I forgot that the mob was still in control back then.

I love what she's doing with the Charley website! It will take some time to get used to it, but it looks like there's room for more information this way.

Oops! The sentence in my original post should read " The Mafia, the Teamsters, and a group of Mormon elders......".

It's been said, (Outside "Las Vegas") that "If all the Bodies out there were to Stand up, there would be one HELL of a Population Problem".

I would think the Friend Knows ALOT MORE THAN SHE SAID. Whatever She said. After all, They did Travel together, being in a Strange City, I would think it would be likely to stick close. Especially with what they were planning to do. And the Friend Traveled back WITHOUT HER.?.
