I was trying to figure out what the significance of a 'plastic bag' would mean. This link explains it.

Tracey Leong explains what crews found.

Relisha Rudd was last seen alive in March of 2014. This weekend, search crews made the discovery they’ve been hunting for.

“I was shocked that it was right there,” said Jerry Boylan, captain of the Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit.

Boylan volunteered to help Rudd’s family search Kenilworth Park along the Anacostia River. On Saturday, they found exactly what they were searching for.

“Looked like someone had something in a bag they wanted to sink,” Boylan said.

Campaign to put faces of Relisha Rudd, Hoggle siblings on area bus shelters

The faces of Relisha Rudd and Jacob and Sarah Hoggle — three children whose disappearances left an indelible mark in the D.C. area’s public eye — will soon be gracing 50 bus shelters around the city and 14 billboards in the Baltimore area as part of a national campaign to bring home missing youths.

Just look at that beautiful smile, and her eyes so full of joy - even though her life was clearly not an easy one, she doesn't look hard or jaded. What a beaiutiful little girl.

I am not very hopeful, I'm afraid:

Tatum, whom investigators believe shot and killed his wife in a Maryland motel room, was found dead of an apparent suicide in a Northeast Washington park where police were searching for Relisha. The girl is still missing a year later, and many fear she is dead.

That article is a good summary of the case. Shocking, about the conditions of the homeless kids... what the hell. Like dogs in a shelter.

Family & Friends Celebrate Missing Girl’s Birthday, Hope She’ll Be Found

Relisha Rudd, the little girl who vanished in northeast DC, is being remembered.

Mike Schuh reports some still have hope the eight-year-old is still alive, even though she hasn’t been seen since March 2014.

With prayer, song and dance, family and friends gathered in DC to celebrate what would have been Relisha Rudd’s 10th birthday and comfort her family.

D.C. police end five-hour search for Relisha Rudd at construction site

The latest attempt to find the remains of missing child Relisha Rudd ended in failure Thursday after police cadets fanned out across a desolate construction site in Northeast Washington near a hotel that was one of the last places the girl was seen with her abductor.

D.C. police would not say what drew them to a 15-acre, triangular-shaped lot off Bladensburg Road and New York Avenue. Up to 80 searchers and K-9 dogs trained to smell cadavers combed through weeds and over mounds of hard red clay for five hours before police announced that they had found nothing of significance. Police said they plan to search a second, undisclosed site at a later date.

Supporters remember Relisha Rudd two years after she disappeared

Several dozen people gathered Saturday afternoon at a recreation center in Northeast Washington to remember Relisha Rudd through prayer and dance, two years after the little girl disappeared with a man who worked as a janitor at the homeless shelter where she lived.

Relisha’s mother, Shamika Young, said she was grateful to the community for the show of remembrance. “I still have hope and faith that she’ll return one day,” she said.

Many in attendance Saturday did not know Relisha. They came to show that they still care about a girl whose name dominated news coverage for months in 2014, when she disappeared at age 8. Relisha would have turned 10 in October; her case has largely disappeared from public conversation.

She escaped the shelter just before Relisha disappeared. She’s back again.

It was a little hard to leave, because she and Relisha Rudd were inseparable back when they were 7 and 8 and living in the homeless shelter at D.C. General — they were best friends who did everything together.

She’s 10 now. And it’s even harder to be homeless again and back in that decrepit shelter.

Because being back means dad’s landscaping job went south. Being back means riding the school bus to the very last stop, so no one else knows where the homeless kids live.

Being back means constant reminders of the friend who disappeared.

The 10-year-old girl hanging upside down, her hair beads click-clacking as she swung on the shelter’s playground bars, could have been Relisha.

“We saw it on the news, that [Relisha] was missing, that she was snatched,” said Charles Simpkins, 37, the single dad raising his whip-smart, math-loving daughter.

“I couldn’t believe it. He wanted to take my daughter to his house, he asked me,” Simpkins said. “But I wasn’t going to let her go anywhere without me.”

New search for Relisha Rudd focuses on National Arboretum

Investigators began a new, two-day search for the girl Wednesday at the National Arboretum, D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters.

A team of about 60 investigators, including divers and K9 units, are searching for the girl on land and in the water, she said.

Lanier declined to specify what details in the investigation led them to the arboretum.

"I really don't want to speak on the specifics of what we're following up on today," she told reporters.

Authorities didn't reveal whether they found anything after a day of searching. They're scheduled to return to the arboretum Thursday.

The 446-acre U.S. National Arboretum, in Northeast Washington, includes gardens, ponds and wooded areas on its grounds.

Lanier wouldn't specify where search teams were looking, but said their search would include a body of water.
"It's not a large body of water," she said, "but it's going to take the divers some time to get through it."

New search for long-missing D.C. girl Relisha Rudd after tip

Police say they're launching the new search at the National Arboretum in northeast Washington after receiving a tip, reports CBS affiliate WUSA9. The station reports that Police Chief Cathy Lanier wouldn't go into detail and what new information police received.

"It's not uncommon for people to provide information that they've had for long periods of time that they didn't provide initially," Lanier told the station.

D.C. Police Reinvigorate Search for Relisha Rudd

D.C. police launched a new search for the remains of 8 year old Relisha Rudd on April 13, the Washington Post reported.

The April 13 search took place near the National Arboretum, several blocks from the Holiday Inn Express where Relisha and Tatum were seen together. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier told reporters that the search would include the efforts of sixty people, included members of the D.C. police, the FBI, and the National Center for Exploited and Missing Children. Lanier also stated that divers would be searching a murky pond and police dogs would be searching the surrounding area.

    Where is Relisha Rudd?

It’s been two years since Relisha Rudd went missing. As time passes with no sign of her, the question remains: where is Relisha Rudd?

“One of the working theories was that she was sold into child sex trafficking; even possibly down in Atlanta Georgia. Obviously, that has not been proven but that is what a lot of people were thinking could have been the case,” said Nikki Burdine, a WUSA9 Reporter who covered Rudd’s disappearance in 2014.

The average age for entry into child sex trafficking is between 12 and 14 years old. Relisha was only 8 years old when she went missing, but it is not uncommon for children as young as 5, 6, or 7 years old to be exploited.

There is also a large possibility that Rudd was murdered by Tatum.

“We like to hold onto hope that she is still alive until there is a body that would lead us to believe otherwise,” said Wilson. Her organization that brings awareness to missing children of color. Visit www.bamfi.org to see images of missing children. If you recognize any of the kids, you can make a report and help bring a child home.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the location and return of missing 8-year-old Relisha Rudd. If you have any information concerning this investigation, please contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, or the nearest FBI office.

If you or someone you know is a victim of trafficking, you can get help by contacting the National Human Trafficking hotline. The number to call is 1-888-3737-888.

Friends gather to remember Relisha Rudd on what would have been her birthday

On Saturday, Relisha, presumed dead by police, would have turned 11. At the Deanwood Recreation Center in Northeast, members of the Facebook group “We Are Relisha” hosted an event honoring the young girl. Although Relisha’s mother, Shamika Young, did not attend, several of Relisha’s other relatives did, including her aunt Ashley Young, 29, who lives with Shamika Young in the District; her great-grandfather James Hagens, 74, of Maryland; her step-grandfather George Turner, 62; and her grandmother Melissa Young, 47.

“I wish she was here to celebrate her 11th birthday,” Melissa Young told the crowd of about 40 adults and children, “but she’s not . . . due to certain circumstances.”
