FBI, Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan Hold Press Conference On Missing Local Girl

Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office Major Randy Sanchez confirmed to the Los Alamos Reporter at 3 p.m. today that a man has been taken into custody on outstanding Bernalillo County warrants and that he is “possibly connected” to an Amber Alert issued late last night for a five-year old girl.

State Police announced early Monday morning that Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Renezmae Calzada, a five-year old Hispanic female, last seen at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the area of McCurdy Road and Tesuque Lane.

FBI Special Agent in Charge James Langenberg said in any community, there is no crisis more urgent than that of a missing child. He said the FBI got involved in the investigation within minutes of the Amber Alert going out and that he immediately dispatched scores of agents and staff to Espanola to team up with other law enforcement partners.

“Right now we have a community canvas going on, knocking on every single door in Renezmae’s neighborhood asking for any information, what they saw what they heard in the last 24 hours that might provide us with clues as to her location,” Langenberg said.

He said the FBI has brought in its evidence response team, subject experts from the behavioral analysis unit as well as experts in social media exploitation such as cell phones, videos and computers. Asked anyone with any information no matter how small to come forward.

“The FBI is committed to staying here as long as it takes to find Renezmae. We will follow every single lead. We will leave no stone unturned in order to bring her back home. So whether you’re a relative or a family member or someone in the community, if you have any information that you would like to share with us, we would greatly appreciate it,” he said.

He went on to thank everyone in the community who has stepped forward to assist law enforcement in its endeavors to locate Renezmae. He echoed Sheriff Lujan’s remarks saying law enforcement is laser focused to find Renezmae and every resource is being brought to bear to do so.

“Anytime a five year old is missing we’re going to assume she is in danger. If she’s not with the family she’s endangered. So she’s missing and endangered” Sheriff Lujan said.

Española community searches for missing 5-year-old, possible suspect in custody

A man is in custody in connection with the disappearance of a 5-year-old Española girl.

Renezmae Calzada was last seen playing in her front yard near McCurdy Road and Fairview Lane in Española around 9:45 a.m. Investigators said the girl’s mother called 911 to report her daughter missing around 6 p.m -- almost 10 hours later.

Monday afternoon, the girl's mom, relatives and friends gathered in a remote area a few blocks from the girl's home to search for clues or suspicious evidence that might help them find out what happened to the girl. Many volunteered their own ATVs to help in the search.

"I guess they enjoyed coming up here for whatever reason, so they thought it was a good idea to start here," said Pablo Montoya, with the Española Fire Department. "They’ve kinda taken it amongst themselves to start searching. I don’t think there’s any detailed specific information leading us to any one place yet."

Police said the girl’s family is cooperating and they don't believe her parents were involved. They also said this is an active investigation and their current focus is to find the child.

"We will follow every single lead, we will leave no stone unturned to bring Renezmae home," said James Langenberg, a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

Lujan didn't disclose the name of the possible suspect who is in custody but said he was taken in Sunday night on unrelated charges.

“He was arrested by the Rio Arriba Sheriff's Department on three outstanding warrants outside of Bernalillo County," Lujan said.

The community is hoping for answers and Renezmae’s safe return home.

FBI: Girl's disappearance went unreported for nearly 10 hours

The Rio Arriba Sheriff's Office and FBI updated the investigation into the disappearance of 5-year-old Renezmae Calzada Monday afternoon.

The sheriff said she was last seen playing in her front yard near McCurdy Road in Espanola at 9:30 a.m.

She was reported missing around 6:45 p.m. by a person who authorities believe is Renezmae's mother.

Authorities are investigating why it took so long for Renezmae to be reported missing.

Officials said they have someone in custody, on unrelated outstanding warrants, who "could be" tied to Renezmae's disappearance. However, no charges have been filed in the case.

More than a dozen agencies are looking for Renezmae. A search party will continue to be on the lookout Tuesday morning to cover Prairie Dog back to Mile 31 in Española.

Española girl, 5, missing two days; suspect in custody

Authorities have a possible suspect in custody in the disappearance of a 5-year-old girl, the FBI and Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office announced during a joint news conference Monday afternoon.

The name of the man was not revealed, although authorities did say he was being held on three outstanding warrants out of Bernalillo County. He was arrested Sunday night by Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office personnel, Sheriff James Lujan said.

Meanwhile, an extensive search was underway for Renezmae Calzada, who was last seen playing outside her Española home near McCurdy Road and Tesuque Lane around 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

“We’re pretty sure it wasn’t a parental abduction,” said Lujan.

The FBI “is committed to staying here as long as it takes to find Renezmae,” he said.

“We will follow every single lead and we will leave no stone unturned to bring her back home,” he added.

Langenberg said it was not unusual for the FBI to get involved in an Amber Alert disappearance. “We reached out to the sheriff’s office and offered our assistance,” he said.

Albuquerque FBI spokesman Frank Fisher, asked later whether the FBI’s participation in the case was connected to federal jurisdiction on Indian land – Española is abutted by Santa Clara and Ohkay Owingeh pueblos – said, “That’s not the main reason. The main reason we’re here is for law enforcement assistance.”

“We don’t wait for people to cross state lines like in the old days,” Fisher said. He also said it would be “premature” to identify the possible suspect who is in custody.

The Red Cross was also part the search effort, providing food and water for searchers from a base at the Ohkay Owingeh casino. The Red Cross said in a news release that it was also assisting family members “directly involved with this ongoing missing person case.”

The Rio Arriba County Sheriff says Renezmae Calzada was last seen playing in the front yard of her Española home Sunday morning around 9 a.m. According to the mother’s Facebook page, she was at work and the girl was with the mother’s boyfriend. It was when she got home, around 8 p.m., that he told her Renezmae was missing.

Investigators say one man has been taken into custody who could possibly be connected to the girl’s disappearnce. They confirmed that the person in custody is the mother’s boyfriend Malcolm Torres.

He was arrested Monday for three outstanding warrants which were a failure to pay and failure to comply in some past DWI cases. Court records show the mother had filed a petition last month to establish child support from Torres and visitation with both children. Investigators say they are currently questioning him.

Wednesday morning, the Sheriff's office confirmed to KOAT, the man they have in custody was arrested on three outstanding warrants out of Bernalillo County, but none are connected to the disappearance of Renezmae Calzada.

"If you go and review your video cameras and you see something, give us a call. If you see a pretty little girl that looks just like this, give us a call and we’ll look into it," Lujan said.

    Missing Española Girl Found Dead

The body of 5-year-old Renezmae Calzada was found Wednesday in the Rio Grande near Santa Clara Pueblo, according to two sources who participated in the search crew.

Authorities called back search parties shortly after the discovery, and started tearing down a command post they had established at Ohkay Casino, ending a search that involved scores of local and state police officers and FBI agents and even more local volunteers.

Calzada was first reported missing by her mother, Victoria Maestas, via 911 at 7:39 p.m., Sunday, dispatch records show.

“The father called her (and) said she has been missing since 9:30 a.m. this morning,” dispatchers wrote. “Malcolm Torres is the father. Father hasn’t reported the child missing and thought the (mother’s) family picked her up.”

Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan confirmed at a Monday press conference that one person had been taken into custody, after first being held in investigative detention.

Malcolm Torres was taken into custody at the Dairy Queen on North Riverside Drive, shortly after Calzada was reported missing, dispatch records show.

Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dwayne Epling then took Torres back to the home on Arch Lane.

5-year-old girl found dead following Amber Alert

Authorities announced they found 5-year-old Renezmae Calzada's body Wednesday.

Frank Fisher, spokesperson for the FBI, said Renezmae's body was found in the Rio Grande in Española around noon. Her body has been sent the Office of the Medical Investigator to determine how she died.

How do absolutely despicable acts like this keep occurring? How can anyone callously take anyone elses life, let alone a defenseless child? It makes me so utterly sad and also so unapologetically livid!

Small community in shock after missing 5-year-old girl is found dead

In a press conference Monday, the sheriff said one man had been arrested on outstanding warrants and could be a suspect in the girl’s disappearance. However, two days later officials told KOAT that the person arrested was not connected to the case.

    [...]

No further information has been released, including whether officials are pursuing potential suspects.

"But I can assure you, this investigation has not stopped. We'll continue to work until we can identify the responsible party for Renezmae," Langenberg said.

Renezmae’s mom sought to see children

Victoria Maestas of Española had filed a court petition requesting that she be “allowed to see my children” about a month before her daughter Renezmae Caldaza was reported missing on Sunday, court records show.

Maestas’s petition asks that custody of Renezmae and another child be shared 50-50 with Malcolm Torres, who has been a boyfriend of Maestas and was taken into custody a few hours after Renezmae’s disappearance was reported to law enforcement authorities.

Maestas’s Aug. 7 filing in state District Court doesn’t make clear what custody arrangement, if any, existed between her and Torres at the time.

Maestas asked in the filing, “To let me see my children until something is decided. I would like to have them 50% of the time or can have full custody until then.”

Court records show that there was supposed to be a Family Court Services hearing on the matter Wednesday, the day Renezmae’s body was found in the Rio Grande.

The other child cited in the petition is 1-year-old Ignacio, who does not have the same last name as Torres. The petition says that Torres has acknowledged parentage of both children with the state Department of Vital Statistics, although police have said that Renezmae’s biological father lives in southern New Mexico.

Last Halloween, Torres was arrested after he allegedly beat Maestas after accusing her of cheating on him. A State Police officer found Torres walking with the baby boy as the officer was responding to the domestic violence call.

According to a criminal complaint, Torres, who was reportedly drunk, told the officer, “They are not taking my son from me.”

Torres faced charges in that case, but they were dropped in January.

The Rio Grande Sun, Española’s weekly newspaper, has reported that kindergartner Renezmae had not been at school for about a week before she vanished. Dispatch center logs show that Maestas called 911 at 7:39 p.m. Sunday to report that Torres had called her to say Renezmae had been missing since 9:30 a.m. that day. “Father hasn’t reported the child missing and thought the (mother’s) family picked her up,” the dispatch log said, according to the Sun’s report.

On Thursday, spokesman Sean Sullivan of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albuquerque said the FBI has taken over the investigation because whatever took place with Renezmae possibly happened on Santa Clara Pueblo, which abuts Española. The FBI has jurisdiction on Indian land. Sullivan also confirmed reports that Renezmae’s remains were found in the Rio Grande.

I'm struggling to make sense of this family dynamic so I gotta type it out.

Malcolm Torres is not Renezmae's biological father. But Torres was keeping Renezmae from her mother. Torres was mom's boyfriend, or former boyfriend? It seems that they did not live together, since bio mom was seeking to see her kids. He must be the father of the 1-year-old sibling. Which would make more sense as to why her mom didn't report her missing for 10 hours. Nobody told her.

Renezmae’s mom: ‘He said … he’d kill me’

Judge Sylvia LaMar signed a stipulated order of protection granting the restraining order. The couple agreed to share custody, with each of them being responsible for the children a week at a time. They were to exchange custody of the children each Friday at a school day care facility.

*(Did Malcom have custody that week since he didn't call Victoria because he thought her (Victoria's) family had picked Renezmae up? Given the above court order exchanges were to occur on Fridays.)

    Missing Española Girl Found Dead

At one point, a man who identified himself as Calzada’s biological father contacted dispatchers and asked that an officer call him. He declined to comment Tuesday.

But he would know his daughter wasn't at school all week since it was his week, so he would know that she didn't get picked up there.

Stepfather of Renezmae Calzada sent to jail for probation violation

The Española stepfather who was questioned in the disappearance and death of Renezmae Calzada will stay in jail for a different case.

Malcolm Torres was in court Wednesday for an Albuquerque case. Torres was being held behind bars for over two weeks.

He was sentenced to a year of probation but he didn’t show up to meet his probation officer and didn’t pay his fines. Since then, there were warrants out for his arrest for violating his probation.

Wednesday, Metropolitan Court Judge Maria Dominguez ordered him to serve 90-days in jail in addition to addiction treatment.

There was no mention of Renezmae’s case Wednesday in court. Officials say right now, Torres has not been charged with anything in the Calzada case and they have no suspects.

Investigators still haven’t called the child’s death a murder and are waiting on autopsy results. The FBI is leading the investigation.
