On Wednesday 7 October 1992, Rhianna Barreau, aged 12 years, went missing from her home address at Wakefield Avenue, Morphett Vale. She was at home alone on school holidays when she disappeared. Little is known about her movements on that day. Rhianna lived at home with her mother and brother (who were away at the time of her disappearance).

On the day of her disappearance Rhianna was at home and intended to walk to the nearby Southgate Shopping Centre at Reynella to purchase a Christmas card for her pen pal. She was last seen walking away from her home at about 10.30 a.m. that morning. A Christmas card was located in the home on the return of Rhianna’s mother at about 4.10 p.m. that afternoon. Rhianna was not home and has not been seen since. Her personal belongings were inside the house.

Police suspect she has been murdered.

Cold case: Police offer $1m reward for information on Rhianna Barreau’s disappearance on October 7, 1992

Immunity, $1m reward to solve mystery

IMMUNITY from prosecution and a $1 million reward are available for anyone who helps solve Rhianna Barreau’s murder. Major Crime Detective Superintendent Des Bray said both could be a “life changing incentive” for someone to assist the investigation.

“It is time for those with information to come forward and do the right thing,” he said. “More importantly, information provided may enable us to find Rhianna and return her to her family, and make the person responsible pay for the terrible crime they have committed. Do not let those responsible continue to walk free among us.”

The Rhianna Barreau case file is undergoing a comprehensive review to try and advance it. Case officer Detective Brevet Sergeant Campbell Hill said this will include reassessing all witness statements and reinterviewing several persons of interest. “As far as we are concerned there is someone, if not several people, who know something,” he said.

While he would not elaborate on the connection between Rhianna and any person of interest, he said some were of interest “more than others”.

“There are also people who for different reasons may have lied to us. We would like them to have a think about their reasons and motivation,” he said. “Allegiances change over the years, their attitudes to police change. Those people we would reach out to.”

Twenty-six-years later, SA girl Rhianna Barreau remains missing

LIKE a number of Aussie kids in the early ‘90s, 12-year-old Rhianna Barreau had an overseas penpal.

She had built up quite a bond with her American correspondent, and wanted to buy her a Christmas card.

It was only October, but this was 1992, and international post was slower in those days. Her mother Paula had to work that day, but Rhianna was on school holidays, and so the pair arranged for Rhianna to walk to a nearby newsagency to buy the card. There was a bus strike that day, so walking was her only option.

Rhianna’s mother left the house at 8:30am that morning.

It was the last time she would see her daughter alive.

“It is time for those with information to come forward and do the right thing,” he said.

“More importantly, information provided may enable us to find Rhianna and return her to her family, and make the person responsible pay for the terrible crime they have committed.

“Do not let those responsible continue to walk free among us.”

Police said this man tried to entice a 13-year-old girl into a white, early model Holden Torana sedan about the same time Rhianna disappeared.
