UPDATE: Police charge mother's boyfriend with murdering Berkeley Springs, W.Va., girl

The boyfriend of Riley Crossman’s mother is charged with killing the 15-year-old girl who had been missing since last week, police said Thursday.

Andy J. McCauley Jr., 41, of Berkeley Springs, is charged with one count of murder, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday afternoon at a press conference.

Sheriff K.C. Bohrer declined to provide details about the circumstances surrounding Crossman’s death, including how and where she was killed. He said an autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Charleston.

Bohrer said Crossman’s body was found Thursday morning in the 5500 block of Tuscarora Pike in Berkeley County.

Bohrer has said Riley’s mother contacted his office on May 8, a day she didn’t go to school, to report that she was missing.

Riley’s boyfriend was in touch with her early that day through Facetime, Bohrer has said.

A search party of about 70 residents and the Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Department helped the sheriff’s department last week by searching near Riley’s home and distributing flyers.

The search effort continued this week, with more people joining in. Volunteers who gathered Wednesday at The Pines Opportunity Center in Berkeley Springs were divided into teams to search about 16 areas in the county, including in and around Berkeley Springs, Great Cacapon and Sleepy Creek.

Bohrer said McCauley was under surveillance at his place of employment and he agreed to come to the West Virginia State Police barrack in Martinsburg, where he was arrested.

Mother’s Boyfriend Arrested After Missing Teen’s Decomposed Body Found Near Road in West Virginia

Authorities say they’ve found the body of a missing West Virginia girl and her mother’s boyfriend has been arrested.

News outlets report Morgan County Sheriff K.C. Bohrer said during a news conference Thursday that 15-year-old Riley Crossman’s decomposed body was found on an embankment near a road in rural Berkeley County by officers from the Division of Natural Resources. The Berkeley Springs High School student had been reported missing May 8 by her mother.

Bohrer said 41-year-old Andy J. McCauley Jr. was taken into custody hours after the body was found and charged with murder. Bohrer said McCauley had been a person of interest since the first day of the investigation.

Online jail records show McCauley is being held without bond. The records don’t say whether he has an attorney.

Records: Inconsistent statements, odor of deceased person in truck led to murder arrest

West Virginia State Police said a man was charged in the murder of a 15-year-old Morgan County girl after giving inconsistent statements to troopers, and cadaver dogs discovered a deceased person odor in his work truck.

Andy Jackson McCauley, 41, of Berkeley Springs was charged Thursday with first-degree murder in the death of Riley Crossman. The teen’s body was found Thursday over a steep-drop off in the Tuscarora Pike area of Berkeley County.

In a criminal complaint filed in Morgan County Magistrate Court, State Police said McCauley, the boyfriend of the teen’s mother, had multiple inconsistencies in his statements when the construction worker was interviewed by troopers.

At first, troopers said, he would not admit to driving a work truck and later admitted to driving it and said he took the truck to go an area to get drugs from unknown individuals. He also denied he shoots up drugs, but then later said he does shoot up drugs, the complaint said. A witness told troopers McCauley had cocaine in his possession when he left the worksite.

Video surveillance also showed he left the construction site on May 8, the date that the 15-year-old disappeared, and was gone in the truck for a total time of four hours and 40 minutes, which contradicted his time frame of being away from the site for about two hours. Troopers said he also gave inconsistent statements about his direction of travel.

The complaint said the location of the body was in an area consistent with a route of travel that would have taken McCauley from Berkeley Springs to Hedgesville.

Fresh dry wall mud was found splattered on the bed of the work truck that was used by McCauley. Cadaver dogs indicated the presence of a deceased person odor in the bed of the truck, underneath the utility toolbox in the bed of the truck, the complaint said.

State Police said the girl’s body had what appeared to be dry wall mud on the right shoulder and right foot. Troopers said the location of possible dry wall mud on the body is consistent with the alert by the cadaver dog in the rear of McCauley’s truck where the dry wall was located.

The missing teen’s body was found after searches by volunteers over a wide area that included woods, vacant buildings, abandoned vehicles and bodies of water.

An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.

McCauley is currently being held in the Eastern Regional Jail.
