Police: Foul play suspected in disappearance of missing Eureka teens

Juab County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday they suspect there was foul play involved in the case of the two missing Eureka teens.

The teens, 17-year-old Breezy Otteson and 18-year-old Riley Powell, have been missing since Dec. 30 when they left Tooele to go to Spanish Fork and Eureka.

Their car, a blue Jeep Cherokee, was located Jan. 11 on Cherry Creek Road near Cherry Creek Reservoir in Juab County.

A statement from the sheriff’s office, which was released on Tuesday, indicates the condition of the vehicle, where it was placed and how it was found are “highly suspicious.”

Deputies believe the vehicle was left there with intention rather than having been left there by the teens, according to the statement.

There are also other pieces of evidence and leads that the investigators consider suspicious.

Search and rescue efforts, which have included civilians, the Utah Department of Public Safety, Civil Air Patrol members and deputies from multiple sheriff’s offices including the Utah County Sheriff's Office, have been suspended, the statement said.

“The missing persons investigation remains active and still ongoing, and investigators are working hard to locate Riley and Breezy,” the statement reads.

A post from Monday on the Searching for Breezy and Riley Facebook page indicates the family is still offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the location of the teens.

Foul play 'strongly suspected' as search is suspended in search for 2 missing Tooele teens

Authorities are suspending the official search for two Tooele teenagers, saying foul play is strongly suspected in their disappearance.

Investigators found the jeep the teenagers had been traveling in last Thursday. It was hidden in trees, with two flat tires, along Cherry Creek Road in Juab County.

They searched that area thoroughly over the last few days but found nothing. They now believe someone other than the teenagers placed it there.

Breezy Otteson and Riley Powell were last heard from on December 30th while traveling to Eureka. It’s understood they were officially reported missing on January 2nd.

Family, friends release balloons with messages in honor of missing teen’s 18th birthday

On a day when most people would rather be inside where it’s warm, Amanda Hunt wanted to be outside to feel a different kind of warmth.

It’s been nearly one month since Hunt’s niece Brelynne "Breezy" Otteson and Otteson’s boyfriend, Riley Powell, were last seen or heard from. On Saturday afternoon, friends and family gathered at Tooele City Park for a balloon release in honor of Otteson’s 18th birthday.

Warrants reveal new evidence in case of two missing Utah teens

A pair of unsealed search warrants shed new light on the investigation of what happened to two teens who vanished in Juab County earlier this month.

“Several leads regarding the whereabouts of the couple have been followed up on. Several stories that included a possible drug deal gone bad, in which the couple was harmed were mentioned,” the warrant states.

The warrant also revealed the couple was spotted in Eureka on the afternoon of December 30. Prior to the warrant’s revelation Wednesday, the last public reported sighting of the couple was when they left a family member’s home in Tooele County.

A search party found the couple’s Jeep in a remote stretch of mountain near Cherry Creek in Juab County on Jan. 11, 2018.

According to the warrant, the Jeep had two flat tires and three windows rolled down and several personal items were located inside.

“It appeared the vehicle was undisturbed, there was nothing that appeared out of the ordinary upon initial observation,” the warrant states.

Juab County investigators said publicly that foul play was suspected after the Jeep was found.

Property of missing Juab Co. teen’s mother searched

A search warrant released Monday shows that the home of a missing Eureka teen's mother was searched, and three individuals were questioned about the disappearance.

The search warrant, which was released Monday in Tooele County's 3rd District Court, called for search and potential seizure of items that could be related to the teenager's disappearance, including, "any and all camouflage tie down straps."

Police stated in the warrant that when they found the pair's jeep near Cherry Creek Reservoir, it had a camouflage strap stuck in the driver's side rear left spring. When police searched the mother's residence, they reported that a similar strap with a camouflage pattern was found in the bed of a truck. Police also said that the same truck had been seen by a witness, pulling a Jeep that matched the description of Riley's found vehicle.

The warrant said that when the Jeep was found, it had two flat tires, made by punctures in the side wall by a smaller, flat shaped object. "There was no tear in the side wall that would indicate that the tires where moving when punctured," the warrant said.

"Based on the above facts it is suspected that the blue Chevy truck described above was used to transport, conceal, hide, and plant the victims vehicle in cherry creek at the location it was discovered, to give the illusion that the victims where indeed stranded," the warrant stated.

Or someone else living at her residence, maybe? A boyfriend?
Yes, more than anything, I'd hate to think a mother could do something awful to her child and to another mother's child. :(

New search warrants related to missing teens unsealed

Two additional search warrants out of Sanpete County, unsealed Wednesday, show investigators have obtained cell phone records and Facebook profile information from a number of people in relation to the disappearance of Breezy Otteson (18) and Riley Powell (18).

The new information shows police requested 79 days' worth of phone records from mobiles belonging to Otteson, Powell and Powell's mother, Mistie Carlson. Police obtained those records on the belief they would find evidence of illegal conduct, pertinent to a murder investigation.

In addition to all calls and texts made between 11/01/17 and 01/18/18, police also requested any emails associated with the cell phones that might lead to, for example, a Google or iTunes account.

A second warrant was issued for detectives to obtain Facebook profiles from Riley Powell, Mistie Carlon, and Lee Shepherd. In a sworn affidavit, detectives say multiple conversations were previously found on Otteson and Powell's Facebook pages - with multiple people in Juab and Tooele Counties. All conversations seem to end on the night of the 29th of December, or the morning of the 30th.

The new information also shows that when police executed a search warrant at the home of Mistie Carlson on January 16th, neither she, her boyfriend, Lee Shephard, nor her mother, Linda Powell, were at home. Linda Powell's boyfriend, William Larson, according to the affidavit, told police all three were in Wendover. Two days later, detectives were informed by West Wendover police, that Carlson had attempted suicide and had been taken to the University of Utah hospital.

During the January 16th search of the home, the affidavit says cadaver dogs were particularly interested in Lee Shepherd's blue Chevy truck. It was then taken into evidence.

With this many people as suspects, you know there's got to be a lot of gossip and talk in that area. Somebody has said something to somebody, believe that.

Searching for Breezy and Riley: Nearly two months after the young couple disappeared in Utah’s West Desert, family and friends just want answers

Theories about what happened to the kids typically involve Carlson, Shepherd and their friends. Since Riley’s disappearance, a handful of people have littered Carlson’s Facebook with comments, pushing her, as one says, to “come clean.”

She’s been inactive on Facebook since Jan. 2, when she wrote, “Has anyone seen my son Riley L Powell he has been missing for like two days.”

As Draper theorized, Carlson knows people who live in Eureka, and those people know the mines there.

Plus, search warrant affidavits focus on Carlson and Shepherd and no one else. According to the affidavit, Carlson told police she was with Linda Powell and her boyfriend, William “Clubby” Larson, on New Year’s Eve. Larson disputed that, saying she and Shepherd weren’t with them at their home in Lofgreen in Tooele County.

When police came to search the Lofgreen property Jan. 16, they learned Linda Powell, Carlson and Shepherd had gone to Wendover. A cadaver dog investigators brought along “showed a lot of interest” in Shepherd’s truck, which police impounded.

Two days later, West Wendover police report Carlson had attempted suicide.

Linda Powell later told police Shepherd “has been acting weird” since police took his truck.

“You know, I don’t know if Mistie had anything to do with this, but I think she knows something,” Draper said.

But if something bad did happen to the kids, why?

Draper and her son, Kyle, told The Tribune they think something happened to Breezy, and Riley stepped in to protect her.

Breezy’s older sister believes Riley “agreed to do something” for someone and now “it’s kind of screwing them both over.”

Whatever happened to them, Powell said that’s the least of his concern.

“Reality is reality, you know?” he said. “We’ve just got to find the kids, and get that taken care of, and we can worry about the rest of that later.”

After bodies found in mine, man arrested in teen deaths
    By LINDSAY WHITEHURST Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man tied up two teenagers, stabbed them to death and dumped their bodies in an abandoned mine shaft before they were reported missing nearly three months ago, police said Thursday.

Jerrod W. Baum, 41, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder, kidnapping, abuse of a dead body and other charges Wednesday, hours after police recovered the bodies on a shallow ledge inside a deep mine shaft near Eureka, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.

Baum caught the two teenagers after they visited his girlfriend at their home, then bound them in their Jeep and drove them to an abandoned mine where he killed them, the woman told investigators. He said he'd already warned her about having male friends at the house and "it was too bad because he has never killed an innocent before," she told authorities, according to police documents.

The girlfriend of a man accused of killing two teens and dumping their bodies in an abandoned mine has been charged with lying to investigators.
    [......]
The teens went missing on December 29, and Henderson initially told police that they had left her house after smoking pot with her that day, and she had no idea what happened to them.

But after Henderson was pulled over last weekend in an unrelated traffic stop and cops found an axe, a rifle and knives in her car, the rest of the story came out.
