KENNEBUNK, Maine (AP) - Maine investigators have decided to continue digging out the basement of a Kennebunk home in search of the body of an 11-year-old boy who has been missing for 12 years. Searchers dug up one-third of the basement of the Hovey Street home in three days last week, then suspended the operation. No body was found. Authorities discovered a pair of eyeglasses and animal bones. Robert Desmond disappeared in August, 1964. The floor of the house was covered with cement in 1968. The boy's mother, Alice Marden of Kittery, says she believes that Robert is alive. Mrs: Marden and Robert's stepfather moved out of house shortly after the boy disappeared.

edit: link retracted, as I might be wrong.. but found..

Alice Desmond and Chester Marden were only married in the year Robert disappeared. They were already building the house in Kittery at the time this was published.

Building a new home.. but 4 years later, there's this?

Chester M. Marden, Pine Knoll Lane Trailer Park, Kittery, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct by interfering with a Kittery police officer. He was fined $15.

The articles mention other disappearances during that time. Were they also young boys?

The articles are from around 10-12 years after Robert went missing, so that would mean 1976 or before is the period in question:

    Douglas Chapman, 3 yo
    Missing Since 1971
On June 2, 1971, at about 10:30 AM, 3-year-old Douglas Chapman was reported missing by his mother. He was last seen playing by a sand pile approximately 25 yards in front of his residence. His mother reported that she was in the residence talking on the phone, and his father was at work.

Roger Day, missing the day before his 16th b'day
    Missing Since 1973
On 10/04/1973, Roger Day (11/04/1958) was reported missing by his father. He was last seen on 10/03/1973 in Porter, Maine, supposedly going to spend the day at Fryeburg Fair.

    Kurt Newton, 4yo
    Missing Since 1975
From Maine State Police: Four-year-old Kurt Newton was last seen on August 31, 1975 at a campground in Chain of Ponds, which is near the Canadian border in Northern Franklin County. He had been camping with his family. Despite a large search effort by civilians and law enforcement, he was never found.

I haven't found any missing boys in the area, in the 60's, yet.

There's a new video about Douglas Chapman last month (May 2018). It was wonderfully done with several interviews, including his father who was in law enforcement at the time of the abduction. He and investigators believe that it was the work of a local sex offender (unnamed in the video) who they said has since died. They say if they had had the resources back then that they do now concerning the sex offender registry, it might have not become a cold case or his son might still be alive (he believes he is dead). Douglas, Roger, and Robert's dissappearances were all within 50 miles of each other.

Thanks so much for that info! It's very hard to come by, in poor Robert's case.

    Details of Disappearance
Robert was last seen in Kennebunk, Maine on August 1, 1964. He lived with his mother and stepfather on Hovey Street at the time of his disappearance. He has never been heard from again.

Shortly after his disappearance, Robert's parents moved out of the Hovey Street house. The basement floor was cemented over in 1968. In 1976, authorities dug up the cement floor, looking for his body, but the search turned up only a pair of eyeglasses and some animal bones. Few details are available in Robert's case.
