    FBI, Coroner reopen cold case of teen missing since 1979

    The FBI and the Lehigh County coroner's forensic unit were in Berks County on Wednesday, searching a wooded area in connection with a cold case.

    The case dates back to 1979, when Robert Keck, then 16, disappeared from his home in Upper Saucon Township, Lehigh County.

    [snip]

    At that time, Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin said investigators received information from cooperating witnesses in the Keck case that led them to search the wooded area.

    This time around, FBI agents are focusing their search efforts on an abandoned trailer.

    Carl Holzinger, who owns the wooded property near Pleasantville, tells The Morning Call investigators told him a woman claims Keck's remains are on the 72-acre plot.

    Holzinger says the woman told investigators she and another teenage girl were involved in Keck's disappearance.

    FBI searches Berks woods for Upper Saucon teen missing since 1979

    May 15, 2015

    Investigators searched woods near Pleasantville, Berks County, for the third time in just over a year Wednesday in connection with the cold case of a 16-year-old Upper Saucon Township boy who disappeared June 30, 1979, according to the property owner.

    Carl S. Holzinger, of Upper Saucon, said each time authorities have come to him, he's signed off, giving them permission to search a remote plot of woods he owns between Club and Dotterer roads in Pike Township, about halfway between Allentown and Reading.

    He said officials are looking for the remains of Robert Keck, who was last seen by his mother walking out of their home on Main Street just north of Coopersburg about 1 p.m. on a Saturday nearly 36 years ago.

    Holzinger, a retired Lehigh University electrical engineering professor, said investigators told him a woman claims Keck's remains are on his property, a largely unused, hilly, wooded 72-acre plot.

    The woman, originally from the Coopersburg area, told investigators that in 1979 she and another teenage girl were involved in Keck's disappearance and his remains are hidden near a small wall on the property, Holzinger said. He said he didn't know further details about the woman's claims.

    Keck was a student at Southern Lehigh High School, said his mother, Karen Keck. He had plenty of friends and a good relationship with his parents. Karen Keck, now 79, still lives in the two-story house on Main Street.

    Her son didn't have a license, so he often walked or got a ride from friends. That Saturday afternoon, he was going to visit his girlfriend, who lived a little more than 2 miles away on Vera Cruz Road, also in Upper Saucon, she said.

    Public's help sought in Coopersburg teen's 1979 disappearance

    'The littlest thing can hook something together,' Robert Keck's mother says. DA says his office will continue to investigate.

    June 30, 2014|By Laurie Mason Schroeder, Of The Morning Call

    <snip>

    Keck's mother, Karen, said she still holds out hope that her prayers will be answered.

    "I'm 78 now and I would like to know something before I pass," she said. "Maybe get some part of him back."

    Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin announced Monday that his office will continue to investigate the teen's disappearance, one of the most baffling mysteries in the Lehigh Valley.

    Keck, a student at Southern Lehigh High School, vanished on a Saturday afternoon after walking away from his parents' Main Street home around 1 p.m. He told his parents he was going to visit his girlfriend, who lived about 2 miles away on Vera Cruz Road. He was not carrying any money.

    <snip>

    Friends and family members told police that Robert Keck had no reason to run away from home June 30, 1979. He had a good relationship with his parents, plenty of friends, and was an average student.

    Over the years, police have investigated many leads in the case, traveling as far away as Florida and California to check out tips. Last month, detectives spearheaded a four-day search in Pike Township, Berks County, after an informant told police something that seemed to point to that area.

    <snip>

    Information about the case can be reported to Upper Saucon Township Detective Tom Nicoletti at 610-282-3064 or Lehigh County Detective Joseph Vazquez at 610-782-3831.

    Investigation continues in 1979 disappearance of Coopersburg teen Robert Keck of Coopersburg disappeared when he was 16

    Robert Keck of Coopersburg disappeared when he was 16

    Posted: 9:30 AM EDT Aug 06, 2014

    ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Investigators continue to work on the case of a 16-year-old Lehigh County boy who disappeared 35 years ago. Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin announced Monday -- the anniversary of Robert Keck's disappearance -- that the investigation is ongoing. Martin said a search last month in Pike Township, Berks County, didn't turn up anything.

    “Based upon information we received from cooperating individuals, various law enforcement agencies participated in a four-day search in May 2014 for evidence in connection with the disappearance of Robert Keck,” Martin said. “Unfortunately, that search proved fruitless.” Martin and police are asking for the public's help in providing any information about Keck's disappearance. Keck, who lived in Coopersburg, attended Southern Lehigh High School. Martin said Chief Robert Coyle of the Upper Saucon Township Police Department, who was a patrolman in 1979 and took the original missing person’s report, has led the investigation for many years. “Law enforcement agencies are still diligently following up on any leads, and it is my hope that at some point, we will be able to conclude the investigation and provide Robert Keck’s family with answers concerning his disappearance,” Martin said.

    Information can be reported to Upper Saucon Township Detective Tom Nicoletti at 610-282-3064 or Lehigh County Detective Joseph Vazquez at 610-782-3831.

    Monday, June 30, 2014
    COOPERSBURG, Pa. (WPVI) --

    On the 35th anniversary of his disappearance, investigators said they are still looking for information into the fate of 16-year-old Robert Keck.

    The Lehigh County District Attorney's office issued the reminder more than three decades after Keck vanished on June 30, 1979.

    Back in May, police conducted a four-day search in Pike Township, Berks County in connection with the case.

    "Unfortunately, that search proved fruitless," Lehigh County District Attorney James B. Martin said in a statement.

    Martin also noted that Chief Robert Coyle of the Upper Saucon Township Police department was a patrolman in 1979, who took the original missing person's report. He has "spearheaded the investigation for many years," Martin said.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact Upper Saucon Township Detective Tom Nicoletti at 610-282-3064 or Lehigh County Detective Joseph Vazquez at 610-782-3831.

    Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian male. Blond hair, hazel eyes. Robert has a mole on the right side of his face.

    "Robert departed from his family's residence near Coopersburg, Pennsylvania on June 30, 1979. He was last seen walking down Coopersburg Road towards the town of Coopersburg, at 1:00 p.m. that day. Robert planned to visit his girlfriend's house, which was located approximately two miles from his home. He never arrived as expected and has not been heard from again.

    Robert was not carrying any money at the time of his disappearance. He did not have a history as a runaway and nothing was amiss in his life at the time to lead investigators to suspect he left of his own accord. He is described as a timid person who trapped muskrats but was afraid to check the traps alone in the wintertime. He was an average student with a good relationship with his family. Robert told his mother before he left their home that he expected to find a ride with someone later in the day. His family members told authorities that Robert often received car rides from friends or walked to his destinations, as he was not a licensed driver at the time he vanished; he did not even have a learner's permit.

    There is apparently no evidence of foul play in Robert's case, but it is classified as a possible non-family abduction due to the lack of evidence supporting any other theory."

    In May of this year (2015), police searched a remote plot woods near Pleasantville, Berks County, Pennyslvania, after a tip from a woman. The woman, originally from the Coopersburg area, told investigators that in 1979 she and another teenage girl were involved in Keck's disappearance and his remains are hidden near a small wall on the property

    It was the third time the property was searched.

    FBI, Coroner reopen cold case of teen missing since 1979

    May 13, 2015

    EARL TWP., Pa. - The FBI and the Lehigh County coroner's forensic unit were in Berks County on Wednesday, searching a wooded area in connection with a cold case. The case dates back to 1979, when Robert Keck, then 16, disappeared from his home in Upper Saucon Township, Lehigh County. "Oh no, not again. This is several times now and you do not want to see that in your neighborhood, especially when you do not know what is going on," said Gladys Reinhard, a neighbor.

    69 News was also on scene last May as authorities searched the area near Dotterer and Club roads in neighboring Pike Township. At that time, Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin said investigators received information from cooperating witnesses in the Keck case that led them to search the wooded area. This time around, FBI agents are focusing their search efforts on an abandoned trailer. "I do not know if they do not know where to look or if they are just guessing or if their information is wrong or what is going on. But they said they had information, but apparently it is not leading them to anything," said Reinhard. Neighbors told 69 News the owner of the trailer and the surrounding 70 acres lives near Allentown. At least 20 investigators were spotted searching on Tuesday and Wednesday. "Oh yea. It is a lot a excitement for this area," said Peggy Brinkman, a neighbor. Neighbors say they find the case disconcerting. They say they hope if evidence is there relating to the Keck case, investigators find it. "I think it is pretty creepy, but if it was my loved one, I would want them found," said Brinkman. "I just wish they would get it settled so we can have our neighborhood back," said Reinhard. This time around, Martin again confirmed the search was in relation to the Keck case, but he declined to say what authorities were looking for.
