Rudy Ray Rockett Sr., 64, was supposed to get on a flight back to California from Buffalo on Sunday, April 29, 2018 after a quick visit to his vacation house off Lake Ontario. He never made it. Now, Rockett's stepson, Gregory Roy, is being held on a weapons charge and authorities from Niagara and Erie counties are searching for the missing man in the Zoar Valley area.

Rudy’s ring, an anniversary gift from his wife, was found in Roy's room at the vacation house. Roy's car was found with quite a bit of blood inside. Two law enforcement sources confirmed that the car had been seized and that "evidence" had been found in it.

Rockett Sr., an analyst for Chevron, lives in Redondo Beach in Southern California, his son said, but is originally from Oklahoma. His current wife is from the Buffalo area and the couple bought the vacation house in Ransomville for their visits here.

According to Rockett Jr., his father's wife had recently gone back to Ransomville to take care of her son, Gregory Roy, after he had been treated for a mental health issue. In the meantime, Rockett Sr. had traveled to Singapore on business. He had just returned to the U.S. when he came to visit his wife and stepson at the cottage.

Roy was supposed to drive his stepdad to the airport on Sunday for a 6:30 p.m. flight back to California, something he has often been called upon to do, Rockett Jr. said.

After Rockett Sr. failed to text his wife that he had made it home to California, she called the authorities. On Tuesday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office issued a plea for the public's help in locating Rockett Sr. who they said might be in southern Erie County or Cattaraugus County. They are also asking anyone that saw a dark gray 2006 Saab 9-3 in the Springville-Zoar Valley area on the evening of April 29th to contact them at 716-438-3327.

"There was a bloody ring not even trying to be hidden. It was on a night table," Rudy Ray Rockett Jr. said. "The bloody ring was next to the notes. And from what it sounded like it was notes concerning who would be looking for my father and my stepmom. It sounded ominous."

I just pray that the people searching are safe," Rockett Jr. said of the search for his father. "God willing there's a miracle happening right now. But, if you're just in the area or have land in the area that you own, go check it out and and just look and just look around for me is all I would ask. And be safe."

Rockett Jr. said his father, who worked at Chevron, is a great man who loves his family. "He was just kind," Rockett Jr. said while starting to choke up. "A kind guy and very smart and a genuine person."

Missing man's son hopes for miracle, but prepares for worst

Rudy Ray Rockett Jr. is praying for a miracle, but he knows the chances are slim. From what he's been told by investigators, it's increasingly likely that his father, who hasn't been seen since Sunday, was the victim of a homicide.

    stepson held

Rockett's stepson, Gregory Roy, is being held on a weapons charge on $150,000 bond. Law enforcement authorities in Western New York told him they found his father's ring, an anniversary gift from his wife, in Roy's room at the vacation house, Rockett Jr. said in a phone interview from Ponca City, Okla., where he lives. He also said investigators confiscated Roy's car which had "quite a bit of blood on the side door, on the passenger side." Two law enforcement sources confirmed that the car had been seized and that "evidence" had been found in it.

The undersheriff for the Niagara County Sheriff's Office tells News 4, Gregory Roy's bail has been revoked, and he's now undergoing a mental evaluation. Roy is jailed on a weapons charge; He is the stepson of a missing California man.

Rockett's biological son, Rudy Ray Rockett Jr., said Gregory Roy was in charge of driving him to the airport. Rockett Jr. said his stepbrother had gotten out of a mental facility about three weeks prior to Rockett's disappearance.

The Niagara County Sheriff undersheriff said cellphone technologies led them to believe Rockett may by in the Springville, Zoar Valley area. The search for Rockett started there Monday afternoon, but it hasn't been an easy one.

"It's rough terrain down there," Undersheriff Filicetti said. "There is some flat land, but (there are) lots of hills and some heavily wooded areas. It's tough what they're searching in." They've also had to deal with some tough weather in the area.

The undersheriff said along with crews and dogs on the ground, they've had aviation units looking for Rockett from above, along with a State Police drone, when the weather cooperates.

Porter man accused of murdering stepfather found not competent to stand trial

A Porter man charged with murdering his stepfather and dumping his body in a Cattaraugus County ravine is not mentally competent to stand trial, according to a psychologist.

Dr. Evelyn Coggins of the Erie County Mental Health Department was asked to examine Gregory A. Roy to see if he knew right from wrong at the time he allegedly killed Rudy Ray Rockett on April 29, said Niagara County Assistant Public Defender A. Joseph Catalano.

Catalano said in Niagara County Court Friday that Coggins "believes (Roy) is not competent to stand trial."

Catalano and defense lawyer Michele G. Bergevin were considering a mental health defense for Roy at a trial set to begin April 8.

"He hasn't been on his meds since before the alleged incident. He's having issues with reality," Catalano said.

Catalano said the same two doctors likely will be asked to re-examine Roy and report back in time for a March 22 court appearance.

Roy ruled competent to stand trial

Gregory A. Roy, the Porter man charged with murdering his step-father April 29, 2018, has again been ruled competent to stand trial for second-degree murder.

Defense attorney Joseph Catalano requested a second competency evaluation Feb. 1, saying a psychologist determined Roy was off his medications and may have been experiencing a schizophrenic episode when he allegedly shot Rudy Ray Rockett Sr.

Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon agreed to order a second mental health evaluation.

Two psychologists, Dr. Melissa Heffler and Dr. Brian Joseph, found Roy was competent to stand trial for murder.

Roy will return before Sheldon April 8, the day his murder trial was scheduled to begin, for a competency hearing. If Sheldon rules Roy is incompetent for trial, she could order Roy to civil commitment at a mental health treatment facility until he is found competent.

If Roy is found competent, his murder trial could proceed.

Roy found incompetent to stand trial, committed to psychiatric center

A Niagara County Court judge on Friday ordered Gregory Roy, a Porter man accused of killing his step-father, to be committed to Rochester Psychiatric Center for up to one year, after two psychologists found Roy was not competent to stand trial.

If psychiatric center staff deem Roy competent, he could be returned to Niagara County Court to stand trial for murder.

Roy’s mental condition has been in question for months, after defense attorneys raised concern that Roy had stopped aiding in his defense.

This past June, a panel of three psychologists found Roy competent to stand trial, shortly before he was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Rudy Ray Rockett Sr.

However, defense attorney Joseph Catalano told Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon on Feb. 1 that Roy's mental condition has deteriorated since his arrest because he has refused to take his medications, including Zoloft and Risperdal.

Sheldon ordered that Roy undergo a second mental health evaluation March 22. After that evaluation, two psychologists, Dr. Melissa Heffler and Dr. Brian Joseph, found Roy was competent to stand trial for murder.

But upon evaluating Roy again April 11, Heffler and Joseph reversed course and advised that Roy be placed at Rochester Psychiatric Center until he is competent to stand trial.

Roy found competent to face murder charge

Gregory A. Roy of Porter has been found competent to stand trial on charges that he shot and killed his stepfather, Rudy Ray Rockett Sr., in his mother's car during an April 29, 2018, drive to Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Roy, who has been in custody since his April 30, 2018, arrest on a weapons charge, was returned to the jail Sept. 30, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office. He is scheduled to appear before Sheldon on Oct. 11 for a pre-trial hearing.
