In 2005, a man from Texas who thought he might be their son contacted the Morts.

The man, who had been adopted, noticed that pictures of him as a child bore a striking resemblance to those of Russell, and his younger sister. The man also had the same blood type as Russell's father.

However, DNA testing eventually ruled him out as being the Mort's long lost son.

"But we still stay in touch with that young man to this day," Mrs. Mort said.

Another Mother's Day will come on Sunday.

Another Mother's Day... without this mother's son.

"I think about Russell most every day...we had two other girl's after Russ disappeared and we're busy now with grand babies, and it's helped an awful lot," Mort said.

Russell Mort's case has an interesting distinction in that in the 1985, his was the first picture of a missing child from upstate New York, to be depicted on a milk carton. It became a common method used to try to locate missing children before the advent of the internet.

In her home, Mrs. Mort keeps two thick scrapbooks of news articles, photos, and other items related to her son's disappearance, including a flattened, now 28-year-old milk carton with his picture on it.

Ruth says if there are currently any leads in the case of her son's disappearance, she would not necessarily know of them, explaining that in more recent years investigators have changed their practices, to avoid notifying families of potential leads until and unless they pan out.

This diminishes scenarios by which hopes are raised; only to be dashed, which in years past she describes as a like "being on a roller coaster".

"It's a two edged sword...sometimes I wish they would share all tips with us...but sometimes I'm thankful that they don't," Mort said.

Mort was last seen playing in the fenced-in backyard of his home at Lynch's Trailer Park in Niagara Falls, New York on May 5, 1982. His mother went inside the house for a few moments to repair a toy; when she returned, Mort had disappeared.
The trailer court is located along the Niagara River above the Niagara Falls approximately 5 miles away. There are no witnesses to Russell either going into the Niagara River or of him being abducted.
The following unidentified individuals are wanted for questioning in Mort's disappearance:

The unidentified White female is described as being in her early to mid- with dark brown curly hair.
The unidentified White male is described as being in his late 20's to early 30's with light brown hair and a mustache.
They were driving a 1965 or older white Corvette with a black convertible top.
They were last seen in the area of Hyde Park Boulevard and Packer Road in Niagara Falls, New York on the day Mort disappeared.

Thanks for the links. wow first face on a milk carton, I wonder how many there has been on since then? We don't do that here although photos of missing persons have been in circulation on the back page of Catalogues for Chemist Discount Waehouse lately. What an awful life for Ruth, To be taken from own family backyard, just heartbreaking.

    That case...those pics...haunting.
These kinds of cases make me think that people in high places or with notoriety (Ala Jared/subway) are allowing this to go on.

Investigators Continue To Search for Russell Mort

In an effort to solve one of Western New York's oldest missing persons cases, investigators have now conducted 35 new interviews related to the disappearance of Russell Mort, the two-year-old boy last seen in his backyard in Wheatfield in 1982.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office announced in 2015 it would collaborate with the FBI's Cold Case Working group to reinvestigate the case. Since then, the agencies have made significant progress, according to Undersheriff Michael Filicetti and investigator John Wick.

Wick, considered the lead investigator on the Mort case, said the 35 interviews have in turn generated new interviews and new leads for the Sheriff's Office and the FBI.

"I think we're moving in the right direction to find out what happened," Wick said. "My heart goes out to the Mort family, because we want to find out the truth, and I know they do as well."

The cold case of Russell Mort; Child abduction remains unsolved

It remains one of the darkest and most disturbing cold cases in the files of the Niagara Falls Police Dept.

But despite national media exposure that has included television programs such as “Unsolved Mysteries,” The Forensic Files” and “America’s Most Wanted,” and despite herculean efforts by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Dept. and the FBI, the 1982 disappearance of 2-year-old Russell Mort remains an enigma.

Russell Mort’s case has an interesting distinction in that in the 1985, his was the first picture of a missing child from upstate New York, to be depicted on a milk carton. It became a common method used to try to locate missing children before the advent of the internet.

Russell Mort. Gone but not forgotten, and perhaps living his life somewhere without knowing who he really is.

    Another Niagara Falls tragedy.

Proof that in most of the cold cases listed on our Forum, are loved ones who are still experiencing the pain as if this just happened. Thank you to everyone here who cares and is able to get the word out!

Actually he wasn't the first. "Etan Patz" was in in 1983. Who disappeared in 1979 while walking to School for the first time by himself, Whose case was finally solved in the last few years. "John Gosch" is also widely known for being featured on "Milk Cartons". Who disappeared in 1982 while on his Paper Route.
