Wife Who Reported Assault By Husband Missing

    Posted: 7:43 AM, September 19, 2006Updated:

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - St. Johns County deputies are seeking the public's help in the search for a 42-year-old woman last seen one month ago.

Sabrina Brazel was reported missing by her husband, Jimmy, on Aug. 22 -- several days after she called the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office to report that he had assaulted her.

Jimmy Brazel was subsequently arrested on a charge of domestic battery. He was being held at the St. Johns County Jail, where police said they questioned him. He is not a suspect, they said.

Brazel's status is listed as missing/endangered, but investigators said they don't know if she just took off or met with foul play.

"We have not reached that level to call this a criminal investigation or to determine foul play," said St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Chuck Mulligan. "However, we're not ruling out the option of foul play."

On Tuesday, deputies canvassed the West Augustine area around the West Third Street home where Brazel lived. They were posting fliers and asking residents if they had seen her.

Detectives said they have followed several leads, and there have been some reports that Brazel has been seen in other parts of the state.

Brazel is described as a black woman with black hair and brown eyes, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 100 pounds. Her husband said she was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and tan pants.

Anyone with information about Brazel is asked to call the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office at 904-824-8304. People can also remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a reward by calling Crimestoppers at 888-277-TIPS.

St. Augustine woman missing for nine years remembered

    JENNA CARPENTER

The family and friends of a missing St. Augustine woman continue to hope for information to explain her disappearance.

Sabrina Brazel, 42, was last seen at her home on Third Street in West Augustine on Aug. 18, 2006.

"Nine years is a long time to not know if your mother is dead or alive," said Brazel's daughter, Shaunitia Moore.

Moore traveled to St. Augustine from Georgia on Thursday for the unveiling of a sign with Brazel's picture and case information.

The sign was erected at the corner of West King Street and South St. Johns Street, near where Brazel lived.

Detective Gene Tolbert said he hopes the sign will encourage anyone with information regarding Brazel's disappearance to come forward.

"There's no doubt Sabrina is with the Lord, but there's a lot of unanswered questions the family wants answered. We hope this sign will drum up some attention in her case," he said. "It only takes one phone call to set this case on fire. It's obvious Sabrina is deeply missed in the community and still a topic of conversation, and hopefully a tip will bring the case to a close. We would like to bring Sabrina home."

Tolbert said putting the sign up in West Augustine serves as a reminder to the community that the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office hasn't forgotten about Sabrina.

Moore said the support of the Sheriff's Office and West Augustine community has encouraged her not to give up the search for answers.

"It lets me know people are still looking for her," she said.

While detectives have pursued leads throughout the years, nothing has turned up.

"We all need closure," said O. J. Harris, a West Augustine resident. "We need to know what happened and where she can be found. The Lord has her, but her family needs to have her. We need to continue to pray for her and her family because prayer changes things."

Kriem Mitchell, Brazel's neighbor, said Brazel would always tell her when she was leaving the house.

"I'm no stranger to Sabrina," she said. "She was one of those people who would never go away or leave town without saying anything to me."

    The case

Brazel was reported missing by her husband, Jimmie Brazel, on Aug. 22, 2006.

Moore said her mother had previously made arrangements to move to Georgia with her.

"She was supposed to call me so I would know where to pick her up, but she never did," Moore said. "The last we heard, she had gone to see her husband (Jimmie Brazel), and no one has seen her since then."

Some of Brazel's personal belongings were found abandoned on West Fourth Street around the time of her disappearance, the Sheriff's Office said.

Moore said she and her family knew Jimmie had a history of abuse, so she suspected him from the beginning.

"My mother wouldn't have just left," she said. "She had kids and a family, and she wouldn't have just left without telling anyone."

Jimmie had previously been charged with domestic battery against Brazel, but that charge was unrelated to her disappearance, the Sheriff's Office said.

Tolbert said charges were filed against Jimmie, and an arrest warrant was issued. But Sabrina had gone missing by the time that happened.

He also said Jimmie has always been a person of interest but hasn't been cooperative.

"With the length of time and circumstances, we suspect foul play," he said. "Just finding her remains would be huge for this case, but it will be awhile before it will go to a courtroom."

    Case running cold

Tolbert said the Sheriff's Office received an anonymous tip in 2013 to check a specific wooded area in West Augustine.

"It was within the parameters where we believe Sabrina probably is," he said. "We went out with cadaver dogs, but nothing turned up, so the case went cold again."

Tolbert also said they received a tip about two weeks ago and are in the process of investigating that lead.

"We typically get a tip every year or so," he said. "All we need is the right person to call us, and we're continuing to look for that person."

Tolbert said since Brazel was reported missing nine years ago, he's relying on those tips, which can be hard to follow.

"When you have a case like this, you have to pretty much start from ground zero and work it as if it occurred yesterday," he said.

    Details of Disappearance
Sabrina was last seen in St. Augustine, Florida during the early morning hours of August 20, 2006. She resided on west Third Street at the time, and her home was under construction. She has never been heard from again. She was reported missing by her husband, Jimmie Brazel. Shortly after her disappearance, some of her belongings were found on west Fourth Street.

When Jimmie contacted authorities to report Sabrina's disappearance, they arrested him for domestic battery. Several days prior to going missing, Sabrina had told police Jimmie had kicked and punched her in their home. When investigators responded to her call, however, they were unable to find Jimmie. They did not locate him until he reported Sabrina as a missing person.

Jimmie was eventually released from jail, but he was rearrested in 2007 for allegedly grabbing a woman off the street and raping her. He was interviewed about Sabrina's disappearance and is not referred to as a suspect, but authorities did search the Brazel home for her body. No evidence was located during the search.

Sabrina had planned to move in with her daughter in Georgia, but she disappeared before the move. It's uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning. There have been numerous reported sightings of Sabrina in the Jacksonville, Florida area, but none of these have been confirmed.

It's unclear whether the domestic violence incident is related to Sabrina's later disappearance, but Jimmie is considered a person of interest in her case and hasn't cooperated with the investigation. Her case remains unsolved and foul place is suspected.

    ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -
Sabrina Brazel has not been seen in nearly 10 years, but the family and friends of the missing St. Johns County mother are not giving up hope on finding her.

The 42-year-old mother hasn't been seen since Aug. 18, 2006, days after she called investigators claiming her husband, Jimmy Brazel, assaulted her.

Jimmy was later arrested and charged with domestic battery, but was never named as a suspect in his wife's disappearance, only a person of interest.

"Emotionally I'm really hurt because my mama can't watch her grandkids grow up. She can't see them graduate or anything of that nature," said Shuanitia Moore, Brazel's daughter.

Brazel's family and the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office posted a sign Thursday on West King Street near St. Johns Street, showing Brazel's picture and hoping to attract new attention to the case.

"She was a jolly person, a happy person. Friendly, free-hearted. She used to work two jobs just so she could have and provide for her husband. She was a loving kind sweet person," said Myra Walker, Brazel's sister.

After Brazel went missing, investigators got a tip that they would find her under the foundation of a home being built in St. Augustine, but search teams found nothing there.

The sheriff's office said it received another tip in the case about two weeks ago, and detectives are still looking into it.

"God works in mysterious ways. We take information and prayers. It doesn't matter if it is 10 years, 20 years or 50 we want to bring Sabrina home," Detective Gene Tolbert of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

If you have any information on the case you're asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS.

Husband Of Missing Woman Charged With Kidnapping and Rape

    4/10/2007 11pm report

    By Kyle Meenan
    First Coast News

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- In the area of town known as West Augustine, a single candle burns in the window of the EA Kelly Senior Memorial Church of God In Christ.

It has remained lit for eight months now, a symbol of the prayers of many in this community that Sabrina Brazel will be found.

"Hopefully that this will be over soon. I'm praying that God will reveal her body so her kids will have some rest," said Brazel's cousin, Frankie Mae Durden.

"So I just give it to God and ask the Lord to fight these battles for the family...that it may be over soon."

Frankie Mae Durden says her cousin Sabrina disappeared last August after reporting that her husband had beaten her. She says Sabrina would never just leave without letting some family member know of her whereabouts.

Durden believes her cousin is dead.

"He beat her. She called the police. He said that he find out that she called the police on him that he would take her life," said Durden.

Just days after filing a missing persons report on his wife, Jimmie Brazel was arrested... not for her disappearance, but for domestic violence.

This weekend, Brazel was arrested again for allegedly grabbing a woman on the street in front of his home, dragging her into his home, beating her and raping her.

He's now being held on $700,000 bond.

The news of Jimmie's arrest was no surprise to Durden.

"No, it don't. It don't. I'm very happy. Because now I know that he can't hurt anybody else's child!"

Police continue to question the victim of this weekend's violence, and they continue to talk to Jimmie Brazel looking for answers.

Answers Frankie Mae hopes will answer her prayers and the prayers of an entire community.

"I just want him to do the right thing. Come forward and tell the truth. If you killed her let y'all know. Let someone know. Don't let her go just like that!"

First Coast Woman Now Missing For A Month

    9/19/2006 5pm report

    By Jessica Clark
    First Coast News

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- Detectives went door to door in a West Augustine neighborhood Tuesday, asking residents about a missing neighbor of theirs.

Sabrina Brazel has been missing for a month. The 42-year-old was reported missing by her husband, Jimmie Brazel. He's now in jail for a battery charge from a domestic violence incident against his wife. However, officers said they do not consider the missing persons case a crime.

Sgt. Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said detectives have followed every tip that has come into the office, but that information has turned up nothing. Detectives have also brought in K-9 units to search the neighborhood, but nothing was found that lead them to Brazel.

Detectives talked to neighbors and passed out flyers with Brazel's photo on it, hoping to gain one bit of information that will lead them to her.

Detectives Search Under A Home's Foundation For Missing Woman

    By Jessica Clark
    First Coast News

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- Helen Dennis watched as detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office drilled holes through the floor of her new home in West Augustine.

The home on West 3rd Street was under construction in the late summer of 2006. That's the same time 42-year-old Sabrina Brazel disappeared. Police want to know if Brazel is buried under the home's foundation.

"I hope and trust in God they find the body," Dennis said.

In fact, Dennis knows the woman police were looking for under her home.

Dennis said she first met Brazel when Brazel was about 12 years old. "She always was a sweet girl in my sight. I never heard nobody talking badly about her," Dennis said.

Last week, detectives used a radar device along the floor of Dennis' home to detect any irregularities in the soil. The device detected something irregular under Dennis' home.

So Thursday, investigators arrived at the home for the second phase of this portion of the investigation. They drilled holes in the floor, allowing odors to escape from the soil under the foundation.

Then police brought in cadaver dogs to detect any scents. Neighbors who know Brazel watched and waited for resolution while two different dogs kept going in and outside of the house with handlers.

Joyce Smiley is Brazel's best friend. She stood, even paced, while the dogs went to work behind closed doors.

With tears in her eyes, Smiley said, "If it's her, it'll be a blessing because it'll be over and done with."

However, when one of the dog-handlers shook her head, it was clear the dogs had not found Brazel.

Sgt. Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said, "So at this point, Sabrina Brazel is still listed as a missing person, and we'll continue with any tips that come in to try to locate her."

Dennis said she thanked God the experience was over. About the results, she said, "It didn't surprise me, but it made me feel better."

Tip in 7-year cold case gives family hope

    Reported by: Lorena Inclan
    Published: 11/19 7:38 pm
    Updated: 11/19 8:25 pm

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- After seven years, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office received a tip that prompted a search for a local missing woman whose case had gone cold.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office scoured a wooded area in west St. Augustine looking for the remains of Sabrina Brazil, 42, who disappeared in 2006.

According to police, the search area is about two blocks away from where she was last seen.

Ollie McKing still remembers the last conversation she had with Brazil, who she considered a daughter.

"She had come here that Friday and she didn't look right. I said, 'Are you alright?' And she said, 'Yeah, I'm alright. I'm going to Georgia to stay with my daughter and grandchildren'. She said, 'I'll call you when I get there,'" said McKing.

Seven years later, McKing is still waiting for that phone call. But news of the recent tip is giving her hope.

Lead Detective Gene Tolbert said someone came forward with credible information.

"They told us that they had overheard a conversation amongst some unidentified people that suggested they knew where the body was located," said Tolbert.

The area is located just off West 4th Street. Tolbert said the lack of evidence in the case has been frustrating, but there is no doubt foul play is suspected.

"About a week prior to her disappearance, there was a domestic-violence incident that was reported to the Sheriff's Office, where Sabrina herself had filed an affidavit indicating there was domestic violence perpetrated by her husband," said Tolbert.

No one has ever been arrested in connection with her disappearance, but police consider Brazil's husband a person of interest.

McKing said she has faith that she'll learn the truth someday.

"Someday before I die. I hope I do, I really do," said McKing.

Tolbert said nothing substantial was found during a search Monday but the Sheriff's Office plans to conduct another search soon.

Call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS if you have any information.
