Teenage girl struck, killed while walking across I-5 north of Oceanside

A girl investigators believe was likely in her early teens was struck and killed Thursday morning while trying to walk across Interstate 5 in the far northern reaches of San Diego County, authorities said.

The girl, who had yet to be identified Thursday afternoon, apparently reached the freeway from a side road somewhere between Oceanside and the San Clemente Border Patrol Inspection Facility, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Mark Latulippe said. She was first spotted about 9:45 a.m. on the freeway’s right shoulder.

“She put her hand up for people to see her and started crossing to the west,” Latulippe said. “Traffic slowed as people saw her, and those in the right lanes were able to slow down to avoid her.”

The girl made it across several lanes but was struck when she got to the second lane from the left, Latulippe said. The 21-year-old San Diego driver who struck the girl tried to stop his 2008 Chevrolet, but traveling at about 30 mph, he was unable to avoid her.

Latulippe said the girl was transported by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where she died.

Investigators did not yet know the identity or age of the victim but said she was Hispanic and estimated she was in her early teens, possibly around 14 years old, Latulippe said Thursday afternoon.

She had some really cute clothes. Why in the world would she be trying to cross a freeway?
