There’s a reason why the dogs and trainers that are part of FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces as Canine Search Specialists are so good at what they do. The standards we have for these teams of searchers are incredibly high, considering the gravity of situations that they often find themselves in.

In order to be able to respond to these highly stressful events, the dog and handler teams are certified every two years through a rigorous exam that consists of five elements.

This certification is the only time the equation one + two + three + four = five. Here’s what I mean: The first four elements add up to, or culminate in, the fifth and final element. Each of the five elements focuses on a set of the skills that all of the Canine Search Specialists must master. Ultimately, teams of handlers and dogs must work together to accomplish the same goal: successfully completing a search.

    Hi @Karl! :welcome:

I was watching Dateline last night about Brooke Wilberger and they talked about finding her with cadaver dogs. Those cadaver dogs just totally blow my mind.

Not all SAR dogs perform the same type of search. Some dogs are tracking (or trailing) dogs, and others are air-scent (or area-search) dogs. The types overlap, but the distinction between the two guides are the training process and how the dog participates in missions. Tracking dogs work with their nose to the ground. They follow a trail of human scent -- typically heavy skin particles that fall quickly to the ground or onto bushes -- through any type of terrain. These dogs are not searching, they're following: Tracking dogs need a "last seen" starting point, an article with the person's scent on it to work from and an uncontaminated trail.

For tracking, time is an issue. If a child disappears from a school playground or a inmate escapes from a prison, a tracking dog might be called in to follow the person's scent immediately after the disappearance, before other search groups and law-enforcement personnel contaminate the scent trail.

Interesting that they say a dog trained to find people alive get upset when they find remains.

As a dog trainer (yes i train dogs AND report the news lol) I have not dived into the world of scentwork just yet. I am knowledgable of it, but it will be one of the endeavors I undertake in the future so I can become an expert at... (someday) and BTW!!!! HI @Karl welcome!!!!
