SARA RIDDLE & LISA ROBBINS: The State of California vs. Cecil Byrd for murder

Cecil Byrd, 41, of Bad Creek Road, Bakersville, was charged last week with two counts of murder in the disappearance of two women from two counties.

One of them, Sarah Denise Riddle, 45, had been missing from McDowell County.

Byrd was charged Nov. 5 with killing her, according to arrest warrants.

Through speaking with Byrd, the authorities received information that led them to search the landfill near Lenoir on Tuesday, according to McDowell County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Richelle Bailey.

She said crews were at the landfill "searching for evidence, clues that might lead them to (Riddle's) whereabouts."

Around 2 p.m., the search ended with nothing found, said Shannon O'Toole, spokesman for the State Bureau of Investigation.

Mitchell County Sheriff Donald Street said authorities were searching the landfill because trash from Mitchell County is taken there.

He said dogs and officers searched for about three hours.

"In my opinion, it'd be easier to search for a needle in a haystack," Street said.

On Nov. 4, the authorities uncovered human remains off the side of the road at Iron Mountain in Mitchell County. Street described those remains as "bone fragments."

The remains are being tested; their identity is not yet known.

"It's not as though they found a complete set of remains," O'Toole said.

Byrd has been charged by Mitchell County with first-degree murder in the death of Lisa Ann Robbins, 49, according to warrants. She hadn't been seen in more than a month, the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office said. Robbins and Byrd had been living together, according to the sheriff.
