Search for missing Joplin woman grows grimmer

Police say 28-year-old Sarah Burton was last seen July 16 in the vicinity of 10th Street and Rex Avenue on Joplin’s east side.

Her parents say that’s where one of her friends told them she dropped off Sarah. The friend claimed Sarah wanted to walk home from there. The friend informed Sarah’s parents of that a few days later when she brought them Sarah’s purse and a shoe the friend said Sarah left in her vehicle.

The next day, July 20, Stephanie Burton reported her daughter missing. Since then, more than seven weeks have passed without any sign of Sarah. In her absence, Stephanie and Ron Burton have been taking care of her 3-year-old son, Xander, while Xander’s other set of grandparents have been tending his 8-month-old brother, Zane.

Xander misses his mother, Stephanie Burton said in telephone interviews last week. Every so often, he tells his grandparents: “She’s coming back. She’s coming back.”

Stephanie Burton admits that she’s not so sure.

“I don’t think she’s alive,” she told the Globe. “Sarah would have called her dad or she would have called me. She would not have left her sons. She would not have left her parents like this.”

The Burtons acknowledge that Sarah has had a troubled past, including struggles with methamphetamine addiction and a turbulent relationship with the father of her sons, who is currently incarcerated. But she has always been “good-hearted” and appreciative of her family and friends, they say.

Sarah wound up staying in the Lafayette House in September and October of last year. More recently, she was residing with her parents, who were trying to get her into long-term drug treatment.

She was free on bail for pending charges of drug possession, trafficking in stolen identities and stealing a motor vehicle when she disappeared. Her parents say she was making all her court appearances and had been told by an attorney that he might be able to get two of the charges dismissed and a suspended sentence on the third. They do not believe she would have jumped bail and run off, leaving her family behind just because of her legal problems.

Joplin police have been working about 40 leads since going public with the missing-person case in mid-August. Police Capt. Trevor Duncan said last week that investigators have yet to determine if Sarah met with foul play.

“At this point in time, we can’t rule anything out,” Duncan said. “But we are very concerned about her well-being.”

Last known sighting of missing woman shifts to northwest side of Joplin

Police have acknowledged that Sarah Burton was sighted at a residence on the northwest side of Joplin later the same morning that her friend dropped her off at 10th Street and Rex Avenue in Joplin.

Capt. Trevor Duncan of the Joplin Police Department said investigators still believe the missing 28-year-old woman was dropped off at 10th and Rex by a her friend just after midnight on July 16. But they no longer believe that was the last sighting of her.

"Based on our investigation, she was actually seen later that night at a residence in the northwest part of Joplin," Duncan said. "And that's all I can tell you."

He said the newly established last sighting happened a short time later the same morning. He said he could not be any more specific about the time and place than that. He declined to provide an address or reveal what investigators may know about what Burton was doing on the northwest side of Joplin in the early morning hours of July 16.

Duncan said the friend who dropped her off at the location on the east side has been cooperative with police. He declined to discuss how she may have gotten from there to the other side of town.

"We know there were people who were in touch with her after 10th and Rex who have not come forward but could shed a lot of light on the case," Duncan said.

“She would not walk away from her family or her little boy. Somebody is holding her against her will, or god forbid has done something to her, and we pray that is not the case.” says Sarah’s cousin Michael Burton.

Sarah was last seen in the area of 10th and Rex on July 16th after she was dropped off by a friend. She was listed as missing on July 20th, but she has not been listed as in danger.

There’s been an outcry on social media that the police aren’t doing enough, Joplin Police Captain Trevor Duncan tells News Talk KZRG they are working tirelessly on the case.

“Over 31 leads have been followed on the case. Outside appearances maybe that we’re not doing anything, but the reality of it is that we are very concerned for her well-being. We are desperately asking for anybody that has any information to come forward. All of the tips that we’ve received thus far have been followed up on.”

Duncan went on to say that he understands the frustration.

“There’s a big desire there to find the missing person for the family’s sake, for the missing person’s sake when there’s concern they might be in danger. There’s always challenges in cases like this due to the fact that it’s been six weeks without any credible sightings.”

Per Missouri courts Sarah has active felony warrants against her. I hope that she is missing voluntarily and hasn't become a victim of another crime. Either way her child and family deserve to know the truth.
