Denton PD searching for missing 2-year-old boy

Denton Police Chief Frank Dixon says an Amber Alert has not been issued because the information they have does not meet the criteria for one. At this point, he says there is no indication the boy was abducted so there's no suspect or vehicle description to send out in an Amber Alert. However, he says he's working with TxDOT to put out a regional alert.

Sarbesh's mother told police her son disappeared from the family's apartment located off West Prairie Street.

"She had last seen her son four minutes prior to the 911 call," Chief Dixon said. "She was doing something in the residence and then turned around and the child was gone."

The first responding officers did a search of the apartment, but they didn't find anything. There was no indication as to how and why Sarbesh disappeared.

"There wasn't anything open that led us know that," Dixon said. "But very close to him preceding to leaving, one of the doors was open for a short period of time."

With help from dozens of people who live in the neighborhood, officers and firefighters began widening their search to include a five-block radius from the family's apartment. They used air support, search and rescue dogs and boots on the ground to check storm drains, manholes, trash cans and high brush for any place that a 1-year-old could be.

"We have left no stone unturned and will continue to do that until we bring this to a resolution," Chief Dixon said.

Anthony Kurijlacherry is a family friend. He says the Gurung family moved to Denton from Nepal four years ago so that the boy's father could get his PhD from UNT.

"From my experience, he was a little shy. I don't think he was wild running around," Kurijlacherry said. "I know them personally. They wouldn't do this. Any foul play. Absolutely not."

The police chief says he is not ruling anything out at this point.

Denton PD searching for missing 2-year-old boy

His mother told police she put him down for a nap and when she went to check on him around 2:00 p.m., he was missing.

Police launched drones to help in their search.

More than 100 people from the community showed up to Louise and Ave. G to help assist in the search.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am to live in a community and work in a community like Denton, Texas,” said Police Chief Frank Dixon. “The amount of community members that came out here from the mayor, to the city council people, and just everyday citizens, was amazing.”

The child’s father was at police headquarters Tuesday afternoon speaking with detectives.

Police say at this point the case does not meet the criteria for an Amber Alert.

There are no reports of a child in the area being abducted.

“We have done two very thorough searches,” Chief Dixon said during a news conference shortly before 7:00 p.m. “Now that we are moving to the 7 o’clock hour, we understand people are coming home from work. They are coming home from being out, we are going to do another search.”

“This is far from over. We’re gonna be out here until we find him,” said Chief Dixon. “We have left no stone unturned and we will continue to do that until we bring this to a resolution.”

Anthony Kurialacherry, who knows the family, said the boy’s father is earning his PhD at UNT, while his mother stays at home with him.

“Wonderful family, small family,” said Kurialacherry.

“I can imagine the feelings they are going through,” he said of the parents.

Regarding the little boy, Sarbesh, “He’s a nice little 2 year old kid, always laughing. He always calls me uncle, ‘hey uncle.’ He’s always coming next to me, very charming kid.”

Hundreds pour into Denton neighborhood in search of missing 2-year-old

Hundreds of police officers, firefighters and neighbors searched throughout the neighborhoods west of the University of North Texas campus in Denton on Tuesday afternoon, when a mother reported her 2-year-old son missing from her apartment, police say.

Authorities were still searching the area around the 2400 block of West Prairie Street into Tuesday evening, hoping to find the child who went missing at about 2 p.m., police said.

Denton Police Chief Frank Dixon said there was no foul play suspected in the disappearance of the boy, identified as Sarbesh by police. But Dixon did say nothing was off the table as authorities continued to chase any leads.

Dixon said at about 6:30 p.m. that authorities were regrouping in preparation for further searches into the night. He said the same area would be searched again as people arrive home from work or school.

“We’re gonna go door-to-door in the entire area again,” Dixon said.

More than 100 neighbors and community members showed up near the immediate scene to volunteer for the search. But by about 6 p.m., Denton police Lt. Chris Summitt stepped beyond police tape to tell the volunteers they were no longer needed in the organized search, but added: “If you want to look on your own, that’s fine.”

Dixon told reporters that having a large amount of people is helpful but the high volume could add to the confusion as police try to track which doors they have knocked on and which homes they’ve searched.

“Everything is on the table right now,” Dixon said. “We would have hoped that by now, if he was in the immediate area, walking around, playing at a friend’s house, they would have saw the enormity of what’s going on out here, and somebody would have come forward with him. Since that hasn’t happened, we obviously have to start expanding the scope of our investigation.”

Dixon said it was important to not put any blame on the family in the child’s disappearance.

A man who said he was friends with the boy’s family said the family moved to the United States from Nepal about four years ago. Dixon said the child is verbal, but he was not sure if the child understands or speaks English.

Two different stories regarding how he disappeared. I wonder if that's just due to a language barrier? I hope.

Just noting that I've seen this little guy's name spelled Sarbresh and Sarbesh with a last name of Gurung and Gurumg.

A 2-year-old boy who was reported missing Tuesday was found dead in a vehicle in Denton Wednesday morning, police announced at a news conference.

Denton Police Chief Frank Dixon said Sarbesh Gurung's body was found shortly after 6 a.m. in the radius near the boy's home where he disappeared from Tuesday at about 2 p.m. He said the boy had no obvious signs of trauma.

The vehicle was in the same area searchers had combed through near the boy's Denton home in the 2400 block of W. Prarie Street.

The owners of the vehicle made the discovery Wednesday morning when they were getting ready to leave, Dixon said. The windows of the vehicle were dark, had a sun shade up and a shade for children, Dixon said.

"That family is completely shocked and devastated themselves," Dixon said.

Investigators on Tuesday said they weren't putting blame on the parents and there have been no signs of a kidnapping, but they are following all leads.

The family moved here from Nepal in 2006 so Sarbesh's father could pursue a masters and a PHD in electrical engineering at UNT.

Several close family friends came to the scene, hoping to help the large numbers of volunteers who joined in the search.

"We're here if we can support in some way and do some volunteering and try to search some area," said one friend Girish Oli.

Another, Anthony Kurialacherry, said, "That family is so wonderful."
He added that he had held Sarbesh in his arms many times, saying, "It's a nice little 2-year-old kid, always laughing, he always calls uncle, hey uncle, always coming next to me, very charming kid."
