Missing nine-year-old girl in Rapid City

Pennington County Sheriff's deputies are searching for a 9-year-old girl who went missing from the Children's Home Society in Rapid City, on Sunday. The sheriff's office said they're concerned because they think the girl may be lacking warm clothing.

Serenity Dennard, 9, was last seen leaving the Children's Home Society at 11:20 a.m. on Sunday. She's white, 4' 7" and 90 pounds, with blue eyes and shoulder-length dirty blonde hair.

The authorities believe the girl is from Sturgis and may be trying to go home. Searchers were looking late last night along Highway 16 and Rockerville. She was last seen wearing a long-sleeved gray shirt with flowers, blue jeans and snow boots.

UPDATE: Missing girl ran away from staff

The girl who has been missing since Sunday morning ran away from staff at a residential youth home near Rockerville, the organization’s executive director said at a press conference Monday morning.

Serenity Dennard, 9, was playing in the gym inside the Children’s Home Society, Bill Colson said as he stood in front of the search and rescue command center in the parking lot of the facility on South Rockerville Road.

Dennard and three other children were being supervised by two staff members when one of the other children ran away, Colson said. As a staffer ran after that child, Dennard then took off herself. Because the remaining staffer was still supervising two other children, they stayed put and called for help rather than follow Dennard.

Other staff soon arrived to find her, but to no avail.

"By the time we could get on her trail she was out of sight," Colson said.

Colson said staff then immediately called 911 for help.

"Our job is to work with young kids that need help and we’re very careful about keeping track of them and where they are at all times. Unfortunately once in a while they get away from us. It’s very, very rare. I don’t remember another situation like this one where a child has been gone this long," he said.

"That's not uncommon that kids try to get away once in a while, and that's why we supervise them closely," Colson said.

A staff member can supervise up to six children at a time, but the Children's Home Society tries to have a lower ratio, Colson said. When Dennard ran away, it was a lower ratio of one staffer per two children.

The Children's Home Society is a private nonprofit that provides residential treatment and programs for children with emotional or behavioral needs, and victims of domestic violence, abuse and neglect, or other trauma. Colson said due to privacy concerns, he can't say how Dennard arrived at the facility or of which program she is part.

Dennard was last seen on the road in front of the facility, Thom said.

Thom said while no situation is being ruled out, such as Dennard being picked up by someone driving on the road, there is no evidence she was taken by anyone. Amber Alerts require a suspect or suspect vehicle.

"We don't have that in this case, indicating that she was abducted or anything," he said.

Thom said team members have contacted the few neighbors that surround the rural facility. "We encourage them to check around a haystack, a wood pile, in their outbuildings."

Search ramps up for missing 9-year-old in South Dakota

A western South Dakota sheriff says searchers so far have found no trace of a missing 9-year-old girl who ran away from staff at a residential youth home.

Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom said Monday afternoon that 65 people assisted by dogs are searching for Serenity Dennard. The Civil Air Patrol joined the search Monday morning.

Sheriff's officials say she left the Children's Home Society near Rockerville about 11 a.m. Sunday without a coat. The Rapid City Journal reports the organization's executive director, Bill Colson, says Serenity was playing in the gym inside the facility when she ran away from staff.

Investigators want to talk with a couple who last saw the girl near the children's home. The couple were cutting wood and driving a pickup. Deputies want to get a better idea of where Serenity was headed.

Search for missing girl continues for 3rd day

More than 100 people, some with dogs, continue for the third day to search for a 9-year-old girl who ran away from the Children’s Home Society near Rockerville.

Tuesday’s search is centering on the general area of the children’s home, within a one-mile radius.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is also requesting that anyone with a game camera in the area take a look at the video and let them know if they see anything related to the missing girl.

In searching for Serenity Dennard, deputies have gone door-to-door speaking with neighbors, as well as looking in outbuildings, log piles; hay bales … anywhere a child might hide or take refuge from the dangerously cold weather. The Civil Air Patrol is also involved in the search.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, the public helped find a couple that saw Dennard Sunday. Investigators now have a better-defined timeline of events. Dennard was last seen about 10:45 a.m. Sunday when she left the children’s home.

That pup looks so sad! I don't know it's because he's cold and tired, or that he hasn't found Serenity yet! :tears:

100+ volunteers join search for 9-year-old who fled youth home in bitter cold

Authorities said Tuesday, Feb. 5 more than 100 people were involved in the search for a 9-year-old girl who ran away from a residential youth home amid frigid weather in South Dakota.

Investigators said Serenity Dennard wasn’t wearing a coat when she slipped away from the Children’s Home Society on Sunday morning near Rapid City. The temperature in the area was about -29° at the time.

Pennington County sheriff’s deputies were going door-to door, speaking with neighbors. Crews were also looking in outbuildings, hay bales, log piles and other spaces.

Authorities said a couple who saw the girl were able to give investigators a better timeline of events. The search Tuesday was focused on a one-mileradius of the facility’s home campus.

-29°? Is that a typo? A Google search tells me its about 6° there right now with a low of -1° tonight.

Search for Serenity Dennard ends, transitions to recovery

The search for Serenity Dennard is now a recovery effort, according to the Pennington County Sheriff's Office.

Tuesday morning, teams are briefed before setting out on the third day of searching for 9-year-old Serenity Dennard, missing since Sunday.

The Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday night to transition its search for the missing 9-year-old from a rescue to a recovery. In a release the Sheriff's Office says it's unlikely Dennard survived being outside since Sunday. The release says the Sheriff's Office has not ruled out the possibility Dennard found a warm, safe place or that someone picked her up.

Pennington County Sheriff's Office statement on ending Serenity Dennard search

Below is the statement the Pennington County Sheriff's Office issued regarding ending the search for Serenity Dennard.

    -----

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office has made the decision to transition the search for missing nine-year-old Serenity Dennard from a rescue to a recovery operation.

If Serenity was outside, it’s unlikely she survived. We have not ruled out the possibility that she found someplace warm to shelter or that someone picked her up. We still have an active investigation and will follow up on all leads.

Serenity’s rescue has been the top priority of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office since she went missing February 3 from the Black Hills Children’s Home. Sheriff’s Office personnel will remain in the area, but the recovery efforts will be scaled back until crews with specialized canines from Eastern South Dakota and Colorado arrive. These resources have been ordered, but their arrival date has not been confirmed.

In the last three days, more than 200 personnel and six canines have been assigned to the search of Serenity. The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Pennington County Search and Rescue, Pennington County Fire, South Dakota Highway Patrol, South Dakota Wildland Fire, Mount Rushmore National Park, North Haines Volunteer Fire Department, Ellsworth Air Force Base Fire Department, Silver City Volunteer Fire Department, New Underwood Volunteer Fire Department, Box Elder Police Department, Box Elder Volunteer Fire Department, Black Hawk Volunteer Fire Department, Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department, Rochford Volunteer Fire Department, Fairburn Volunteer Fire Department, Custer County Search and Rescue, Rapid City Police Department, Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, Whispering Pines Volunteer Fire Department, Bear Paw Dog Team, Battle Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Rapid City Fire Department, Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Doty Volunteer Fire Department, Summerset Police Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Meade County Sheriff, Hill City Volunteer Fire Department, and Civil Air Patrol have scoured the area. Searchers have used hand-held thermal imaging devices, distributed flyers, canvassed all neighbors and interviewed more than 60 people to try to find Serenity.

Serenity Dennard is described as a Caucasian female, 4’7”, 90 pounds, with blue eyes and shoulder length dark blonde hair. She was last seen wearing only a long-sleeved grey shirt with flowers, blue jeans and snow boots. She had no coat at the time she left the Black Hills Children’s Home on Sunday.

The circumstances of Serenity’s disappearance did not meet the criteria for an Amber Alert, which includes credible evidence that a child under 18 years old has been abducted. Given the dangerous weather conditions an Endangered Missing Advisory was issued by the state of South Dakota which also disseminates the information quickly across the region.

The investigation into Serenity’s disappearance has determined that she was last seen on South Rockerville Road walking north-bound near the Black Hills Children’s Home at 11 am on February 3. Again, the PCSO still has an active investigation. If anyone has seen or had contact with Serenity, do not communicate that information via social media. Please contact the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office at (605) 394-6115.

Search for missing girl in Black Hills hampered by weather

Efforts to find a 9-year-old girl who ran away from a children's home on Sunday have been stalled by weather, authorities say.

On Wednesday morning, sheriff's office spokeswoman Helene Duhamel said efforts to find the girl have been hampered by snow and cold temperatures. She added that authorities do not yet have a timeline on when specialized dogs will be brought in from Colorado and eastern South Dakota to help search for the girl.

Many schools in the Black Hills area dismissed early on Wednesday due to a combination of snowfall and subzero temperatures, the Rapid City Journal said. Wind chills in the area are expected to reach as low as minus-40 degrees on Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Serenity Dennard Now Missing For Four Days

It has now been four days since 9-year-old Serenity Dennard walked away from the Black Hills Home Society. Tuesday night authorities moved the search from a rescue to recovery effort. The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says if Serenity has been outside this entire time, it's unlikely she survived.

"We have five investigators that are assigned to this, this is all they're doing, working every lead, every possibility, continue to interview staff and other children in the home and family and neighbors, anybody that might have possibly been on that road," Whelchel said.

Whelchel says they're also hoping for a break from the weather.

"With the real cold temperatures and snow, what we really need is a break in this weather, for that too, but we're trying to get those resources just as soon as we can," Whelchel said.

Specialized canines from eastern South Dakota and Colorado have been requested, but the sheriff's office isn't sure when they will be able to come out.

Search resumes for missing 9-year-old girl in South Dakota

Recovery teams are resuming their search for a 9-year-old girl who ran away from a residential youth home in western South Dakota last weekend.

The search for Serenity Dennard has been stalled for two days because of a winter storm that hit the region.

Searchers head back out Friday with specially training dogs to go over the territory near the children's home. Additional dogs and handlers are expected to arrive from out-of-state for the weekend.
