Indian national Shiva Chauhan missing, police hold grave fears
But in May last year he disappeared, his van found with no trace of what had happened to the likable Indian national who was living in Melbourne on a student visa.

Cold case and missing persons squad detectives were told Mr Chauhan was about to begin his delivery route and was last sighted at the bakery he worked for on South Park Road, Dandenong South, about 12.30am on Friday, May 2, last year.

Det Inspector Jill Dyson says police hold grave fears the 27-year-old met foul play, revealing a Toyota Camry reported stolen in the month he vanished may be the key to the mystery.
Police believe the Camry is a strong lead and that Mr Chauhan may have been intercepted during his deliveries.

But mystery surrounds why the Indian national would be targeted, having had no dealings with police and having never expressed any problems to voluntarily go missing.

``There is nothing in his past that would suggest he would disappear voluntarily,’’ Det Insp Dyson said.
``His mother in particular is incredibly distressed.’’

    The INDIAN SUN NEWS

Police were searching a beach on Phillip Island, 140 km south-southeast of Melbourne, for clues to the suspicious disappearance of Shiva Chauhan,a delivery driver who went missing last year, media reported Tuesday.
Police now have information to suggest that Chauhan may have been taken to Phillip Island in the early hours of May 2.
Detectives also believe a stolen maroon 2006 Toyota Camry sedan may have been involved in Chauhan’s disappearance.
Officers from the cold case and missing persons squad and the dog squad began searching Flynn’s Beach on Phillip Island, alongside state emergency service volunteers Tuesday.
“The search is expected to go for most of the day,” police spokeswoman Natalie Webster was quoted as saying.

Police search Phillip Island beach for missing delivery van driver Shiva Chauhan
    http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/p...van-driver-shiva-chauhan-20150202-134k0c.html

Cold-case detectives, volunteers and an interstate cadaver dog are scouring a Phillip Island beach for any trace of delivery man Shiva Chauhan, who vanished last year.
Detectives have received information that suggests Mr Chauhan may have been taken to Phillip Island in the early hours of Friday, 2 May 2014.
Cold Case and Missing Persons Squad Detective Inspector Jill Dyson, speaking at Flynns Beach, said police would not give up until they knew what had happened to Mr Chauhan.
"We've got grave concerns for Shiva's welfare," she said. "He hasn't been seen or heard from by family or by friends and we believe he may have met with foul play."
Inspector Dyson said detectives have "some theories" about what may have motivated Mr Chauhan's disappearance, but was not yet prepared to comment further on the issue.
"We talk to people and they give us certain information but nothing is really clear as yet," she said.
"Shiva was loved very much by his family, who are all overseas waiting for answers in relation to his disappearance," Inspector Dyson said.
"His friends speak really highly of him, he just appeared to be a really good person."

SBS NEWS - Victorian Police are appealing for more information on the whereabouts of Indian man Shiva Chauhan, who has been missing for almost a year.
    http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/...y-girlfriend-missing-almost-one-year-victoria

Every day, Harjap Dhillon wakes up thinking about his best friend, Shiva.
"It just stays there with you, never leaves," he said. "Just the fear of the unknown, what's happened to him."

Harjap said Shiva, a Hindu on a student working visa, was planning to marry his girlfriend of four years, who came from an Afghan Muslim family.
But he said he did not have faith in the relationship.
"I know these kinds of things never work out," he said.
The 27-year-old's disappearance was now in the hands of homicide detectives and Detective Acting Inspector Boris Buick told SBS said that the investigation had narrowed.
"We believe that certainly Shiva's disappeared because of something in his personal background. It certainly doesn't appear to be a random abduction," he said.
"He's come to stop where he's stopped potentially by being pulled over - perhaps by someone that he knew - or recognised someone that he knew."
Recently, credible evidence - believed to be from Shiva's mobile phone - pointed police to Philip Island, in Victoria's south.
Police searched the area last month.
"That would have been the last place where he was alive, if indeed he was alive when taken to Philip Island," Detective Acting Inspector Buick said.
Police were seeking a maroon Toyota sedan which they said belonged to someone Shiva knew.

Why would someone want to hurt him? And why did he think things weren't going to work out with his fiancee?

Firstly, I can't believe it's two years since Shiva disappeared!!

In earlier reports police said the 2006 Camry car was stolen. Later on they changed that to "maroon Toyota sedan which they said belonged to someone Shiva knew"

So I wonder where the owner and/or if the car was stolen from him. Odd there was no photo posted of a car similar to the one involved.

Also wonder when Shiva's student visa was due to expire.

Police appeals to Indian and Afghani communities for information about missing Indian national Shiva Chauhan

    17 Feb 2015

Detective Senior Sergeant Boris Buick from the Homicide Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit of Victoria Police has spoken to SBS Punjabi program about the search for Shiva Chauhan, who went missing on the night of May 1, 2014.

Victoria Police has reasons to believe that he was abducted or taken otherwise to Phillip Island. Police and SES volunteers have searched the area for Shivas body and had a sniffer dog brought in from NSW, which is specially trained to find human remains. But so far, theyve found nothing.

Det Snr Sgt Buick acknowledged that Shiva (a Hindu by religion) was in love with a young woman of Afghani background (of Islamic background), and a cultural clash maybe one of the reasons behind Shivas mysterious disappearance. He has also acknowledged that Shiva is now deceased and although Police have a good idea of what may have happened, no charges have been laid so far. He also confirmed that this is a case of suspected homicide and robbery is not a likely scenario, since Shivas wallet full of money and other valuables were found locked inside his abandoned delivery van.

The Detective has appealed to the community, especially the Afghan community, to come forth with any information they may be withholding; Police also believe that posting a reward for information may not reap any results.

Anyone with any information about this should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

Sadly police seem fairly convinced it's a homicide.

And sounds to me it's something to do with that "cultural clash" and someone didn't like the idea of Shiva wanting to marry the girlfriend.

Police believe a stolen maroon 2006 Toyota Camry sedan with the registration ULO 972 was involved in Mr Chauhan’s disappearance.
This stolen vehicle has never been recovered.
Last year detectives conducted a search of Flynn’s Beach on February 3 – acting on information that Mr Chauhan may have been taken to Phillip Island in the early hours of May 2, 2014.
They failed to locate anything relating to the investigation.
Police are appealing to the public for any information regarding the case.
They have again released a photo of Mr Chauhan in the hope that someone may know his whereabouts, along with a photo of a vehicle similar to the Toyota believed to be linked to the investigation.
Mr Chauhan has been described as Indian, around 177cm tall, with a slim build and straight, dark-coloured hair.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Still no sign of Shiva Chauhan, four years after he went missing from Melbourne

Shiva Chauhan has been missing from Melbourne since the night of May 1, 2014. Back then, he was 27 years old.

He worked as a delivery man at a bakery in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and his abandoned van was recovered by police on Friday May 2 at Keysborough.

Four years later, Shiva's family back in India is still waiting for answers and against the odds, has kept its hopes alive.

His older brother Dinesh Chauhan told SBS Punjabi this week, "We haven't heard any new information from Victoria Police in the last two years. Nothing.

"If only they could understand how hard it is for the family affected - my elderly parents are always in tears, but my sister and I keep consoling them, saying don't worry, he'll definitely come back.

When SBS Punjabi contacted Victoria Police again to for an update on Shiva's case, a spokesperson said, "There is no change or update to this investigation since our last public appeal in 2016."

"It remains ongoing and we continue to ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers," they added.

There's a faded missing poster for Shiva on the telephone pole beside my local bus stop... so sad.

I hope his family get some answers soon.

But the vehicle belonged to someone Shiva 'knew'.... but it's 'stolen'... sounds to me like the cops are really all over this, hoping for more evidence to convict.

I wonder where they got the Phillip Island tip from? It's a pretty remote place, with some rugged coastal terrain.
