The U.S. Navy tweeted Thursday that there has been a shooting at a Navy reserve center on Amnicola Highway in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Navy also said it was investigating a shooting at another Navy building in the city.

Two witnesses, meanwhile, told CNN that someone fired shots at a military recruiting center in Chattanooga.

One officer is "down" in connection with the shooting, Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke told reporters.

He was not specific about the officer's condition.

One witness told CNN that she saw a man fire shots at a building that houses military recruiting offices Thursday morning.

The witness, Gina Mule, said she was working at a restaurant when she heard loud noises. She went to a front window, through which she saw a man with "a high-powered rifle" fire multiple shots.

A police officer has been shot at 6219 Lee Hwy. in Chattanooga. The shooting is at an army recruiting center. The officer was transported to Erlanger hospital.

A search is underway in the surrounding area. The local SWAT and five ambulances are responding at this time. Amnicola Highway is shut down at this time. Chattanooga State Community College is on lockdown. Six ambulances have arrived at the Erlanger emergency room. A statement is expected shortly. The Erlanger emergency department is on lockdown as well.

The 6219 Lee Hwy. shooting is an army recruiting center. Radio traffic indicates shots fired at other recruiting centers in Southeast Tennessee. Stan Clark, head of Bradley County EMS, confirms a report of shots fired at Bradley Square Mall. Emergency crews are on the way.

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke cut short a press conference this morning on a business-related matter, telling reporters than an officer "was down" as well as the shooting suspect.

"This is a very, very terrible situation," he said at City Hall. "I'm very concerned about what's going on. We need to figure out how to handle it."

Two military centers in separate parts of Chattanooga were attacked today by unknown gunmen, leading to lockdowns at the Army Recruiting Center on Lee highway as well as the Naval and Marine Reserve Center at the Chattanooga Riverpark.

Witnesses at both sites reported hearing multiple gunshots in each case.

Carolyn Taylor, who works at Binswanger Glass across Amnicola Highway from the incident site, said she heard what sounded like over 100 gunshots.

"It was eight, 10 rounds at a time," she said. "Several people were shooting."

Taylor said the police arrived and took the employees behind the building and later let them back inside.

Four Marines and the gunman were killed in the shootings in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a senior defense official said. The families of those killed are being notified of their deaths.

The shootings happened at a military recruiting center and a Navy Reserve center in different parts of Chattanooga, late Thursday morning.

Authorities are treating the shootings as an "act of domestic terrorism," U.S. Attorney Bill Killian said. The FBI said all options still are being investigated.

"We are looking at every possible avenue, whether it was terrorism -- whether it was domestic, international -- or whether it was a simple, criminal act," FBI special agent in charge Ed Reinhold said.
