38 years later: What happened to Tammy Mahoney? Teen missing from Oneida since 1981

Wednesday marks 38 years since college student Tammy Mahoney disappeared from Madison County.

Mahoney, 19, was last seen May 8, 1981, hitchhiking south of Oneida on Rt. 46 near the Oneida Indian Nation.

No trace of her was ever found and no one was ever charged in her disappearance.

Last month, members of the FBI, local law enforcement and Mahoney’s family announced they had increased the reward for information from $10,000 to $20,000.

The Oneida Nation is also matching that amount to bring the total to $40,000.

Federal and local investigators are hoping an increased reward will motivate someone to finally come forward with information about the young woman.

“We know there are people out there who have the answers we need to solve this case and bring closure,” said FBI Special Agent James Hendricks. “We implore you to come forward."

The $40,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information that leads to the discovery of Mahoney’s remains or the person or people responsible for her disappearance.
