Originally named Texas EquuSearch Mounted Search and Recovery Team, TES was founded in August, 2000 by Director Tim Miller after the abduction and murder of his daughter, Laura. It is a 501(c)(3) non profit, all-volunteer organization originally conceived as a volunteer mounted search and rescue group to assist local law enforcement personnel in searching the vast areas outside the city of Houston for missing individuals. Although TES has relatively few permanent members, many thousands of volunteers have since assisted in searches throughout the United States and in other countries.

Volunteers are typically trained on the spot when a search is necessary. The expectation is that volunteers know how to use the equipment they bring with them, whether that is a horse or a FLIR equipped helicopter. TES has gained a reputation as a well-equipped organization which can deploy on short notice resources such as radar, sonar, scuba diving or SAR dog teams, and vehicles ranging from all-terrain vehicles to boats to aircraft to remotely operated vehicles.

[IMG]Thirty-one years ago today, the body of Laura Miller was found. To date, there has been no arrest in this case. Tim Miller continues his fight every day to ensure Laura gets justice. As a result of the death of Laura Miller, Texas EquuSearch was born. Laura Miller’s spirit lives on. Tim Miller has dedicated his life to helping families with missing loved ones. Tim has vowed to never leave a family alone if there is anything he can do to help them. Our motto is “Lost is Not Alone.” Please keep Tim in your thoughts and prayers.

Texas EquuSearch in need of funding to keep looking for missing Houston residents

Texas EquuSearch, which contracts with local police departments, is a volunteer horse-mounted search and recovery team based in Dickinson. On its website, the group said it's facing record low donations and may have to shut down.

"We're still taking on cases," he said. "We're still doing what we can do. Now, we've just got to prioritize some cases that we didn't used to have to."

Miller said the group was about $30,000 in debt when he put down about $36,000 of his own money to keep operations running. According to IRS tax documents the group filed in 2016, it recorded about $177,000 in revenue that year and about $365,000 in total expenses.

He said the group comprises 486 members in the greater Houston area. It has opened roughly 1900 searches in its 18 years.
