Adding the case to this section for now but waiting on further police reports about this poor young girl.

Police identify body found at Gold Coast river as Tiahleigh Palmer, 12

    November 07, 2015 12:00AM

THE last time anyone saw 12-year-old Tiahleigh Palmer, she was dressed in her uniform, carrying her purple backpack as she made her way to just another day at school.

A post-mortem last night tragically identified her as the young Logan City girl found dead by three fishermen on the bank of a Gold Coast river.

Tiahleigh, who is understood to have been in foster care, was listed as missing just over a week ago, last seen at McDonalds on her way to class at Marsden State High School.

It is understood the body found on the bank of the Pimpama River was no longer in the uniform, but still had distinctive jewellery.

Police are treating the death as suspicious.

An Investigation Centre has been established at the Logan Police Complex as investigations continue into the matter.

Police are still appealing to the public to come forward if they were in the vicinity of the bridge over the Pimpama River on Kerkin Road North within the last seven days.

Detectives are also appealing to anyone who may have seen any people or vehicles that appeared suspicious or out of place, to contact them

The crime scene is still being contained, with scientific and scenes of crimes officers, and police divers on scene. Investigations are continuing.

Supt Hutchinson appealed for anyone who might have seen anything in the area near where the girl was found near a bridge at Kerkin Road North at Pimpama to come forward.

I have to feel for Regional crime co-ordinator Superintdnent Dave Hutchinson. He has a quite a long list of murder cases on his books.

And now this one is a possible murder case. A 12yr old girl!! Just horrific.

She was so adorable! Do we know why she was in foster care?

To date there's not been any info released about her life/family/foster care but I'm sure it will be in time. She appears to me to be a little Maori girl going by the photos.

POLICE have reissued a public appeal for information over the shock death of Marsden schoolgirl Tiahleigh Palmer, as their investigation turns to missing items of the teenager.

The 12-year-old’s body was found on a Pimpama riverbank late Thursday.

But it is what was not found that has become the focus of police investigations.

Tiahleigh was last seen wearing her Marsden State High School uniform and carrying a colourful Mambo backpack.

However, neither her uniform or the backpack have been found.

Detective Superintendent Dave Hutchinson of South East Police Region would not say whether Tiahleigh’s body was naked when she was found by three fishermen.

He repeated the call for anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 000 333.

He also called for any motorists equipped with dashboard cameras who were driving along Chambers Flat Road on October 30 to contact police if they could retrieve video files.

Detective Superintendent Dave Hutchinson reissued a public appeal for information today as their investigation turns to the 12-year-olds missing items.

Tiahleigh was last seen wearing her Marsden State High School uniform and carrying a colourful Mambo backpack.

“We also want to make a general appeal for anyone who has any information at all about Tiah and her movements since Friday the 30th of October,” Detective Hutchinson said.

“She’s obviously a 12-year-old girl so she associated with other 12-year-old girls.

“We’re reasonably confident that if she planned on going somewhere that day then she would have told spoken about it.

“We would ask the parents out there that have children at the Marsden State High School to speak to their children and ask the questions, find out if they know anything and if they do, give it to the police.”

Regional crime co-ordinator Superintendent Dave Hutchinson said the body could have been in the water for up to a week.

It's quite a distance between where her body was located and where she was living at Marsden.

The blue marker is the Pimpama River area, Marsden is top left, which is very close to where another murder victim lived at Waterford West, Tiffany Jones.

Backpack could be the vital piece of evidence in determining what happened to Tiahleigh Palmer

    • November 08, 2015 12:00AM

A BRIGHTLY-coloured floral backpack could uncover the dark secret of what happened to Tiahleigh Palmer.

Two days after the 12-year-old girl’s body was found on a lonely stretch of riverbank in a remote corner of the Gold Coast, police yesterday issued a public appeal for any information on Tia’s Mambo backpack and her Marsden State High school uniform.

She was with both when she was dropped off at school on October 30, but she had neither when her body was discovered by fishermen on Thursday night.

Detective Superintendent Dave Hutchinson said the recovery of the backpack and school uniform could provide vital clues in what is already being treated as a homicide investigation.

He said it was very early days in the investigation, but police were of the belief Tiah’s body was left at the river, just off Kirkin Road North near Jacobs Well, rather than carried downstream from another dumping site.

Initial post-mortem examinations have not yet been able to determine a cause, or even a time of death

Police are already looking in to Tiahleigh’s complicated personal life and Detective Superintendent Hutchinson said that included family members.

“Nobody is ruled in and nobody is ruled out.”

Tia's uniform was described as a white shirt with maroon pinstripes and a blue pleated skirt.

Her Mambo backpack was predominantly purple with multi-coloured floral patterns.

Anyone with any information call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

    Now it's out....

    November 9, 2015

It emerged last week her mother Cyndi Palmer, 30, had hoped to get custody of her after spending years in and out of jail. Detective Supt Hutchinson told reporters he was aware of Tia’s complicated family situation but didn’t believe her siblings were involved, or that it was relevant.

In the meantime, the school has sent an email warning students to be aware of potential dangers. A candlelight vigil was also held last night to pay tribute to the girl who dreamt of becoming a dancer.

Hundreds of family and friends wore Tiahleigh’s favourite colour purple, carried balloons, and lit candles and shared memories

One note described her as a “guardian angel” — a sentiment repeated on Facebook tribute sites along with many who couldn’t understand why it had happened.

One possibility is she planned to meet up with someone that day and never intended going to school, where her school showcase was due to be held. Mysteriously, her Facebook page was deactivated that same day.

Child protection advocates have called for changes arguing the confidentiality provisions within child protection laws have the ability to hamper missing children investigations.

Bravehearts executive director Hetty Johnston said the current laws made it difficult for foster carers to publicise a child’s disappearance or to check if the child has left to be with a family member.

“It’s a very clumsy system and it’s not in the best interests of the child,” Ms Johnston told AAP.

Education Minister Kate Jones said school principals concerned about their school’s security in the wake of the young girl’s death could able to apply to have security cameras installed.

“More than 150 schools across Queensland currently have them. The decision to put in CCTV cameras is a decision made with the school, with the Department of Education,” Ms Jones said.

Update 4: Police continue to appeal for CCTV footage in the vicinity of Marsden State High School

    Nov 10, 2015 @ 4:31pm

Detectives investigating the suspected homicide of 12-year-old Tiahleigh Palmer are still attempting to establish her movements after she was dropped off at school on Friday October 30.

Tiahleigh was dropped off around 8.10am in Chambers Flats Road, near Marsden Primary School, which is located close to Marsden State High School, Tiahleigh’s school. Her direction of travel after leaving the school is unknown at this time.

Police are urging anyone who lives near the school or in surrounding streets (within the areas located in the below map), and who has CCTV attached to their properties – which faces the street – to check their vision for October 30, particularly between 8am and 11am.

Detectives are particularly looking for any vision of a schoolgirl in Marsden SHS uniform carrying a multi-coloured backpack.

Detective Superintendent David Hutchinson, Regional Crime Coordinator, South Eastern Region is also appealing for people to check their properties for any sign of the outstanding Marsden SHS uniform and or backpack (similar to the one pictured – please note the words Mambo is white, and not purple as depicted in the picture) which are still missing.

No suspects and few leads in death of Logan schoolgirl, Queensland Police say

    Tue 10 Nov 2015, 3:49pm

Queensland Police have said they may never know how 12-year-old Tiahleigh Palmer died and still have no suspects, as divers scour a Gold Coast river for clues.

Tiahleigh's school clothes and backpack are yet to be found, despite police divers searching the river again on Tuesday and SES volunteers scouring thick bushland along its bank.

Forty-three students from Marsden State High have been interviewed by police and 200 reports to Crime Stoppers have been received, Detective Inspector Dave Hutchinson said.

"We don't know what happened to Tia, we just don't know," he said.

"We are still looking at options that she has planned what she is doing.

"There are no suspects at this time.

"The cause of death is still not determined. We may never identify the cause of death."

Officers want to speak to anyone who was on Kirkin Road North around the bridge that crosses the Pimpama River in the seven days prior to Tiahleigh's body being found.

They also want dashcams from cars which were on Chambers Flat Road on Friday October 30 between 7:00am and 10:00am

Tiahleigh Palmer: police receive hundreds of tips

    November 10, 2015 - 6:05PM

More than 200 reports have been made to Crime Stoppers relating to the suspicious death of 12-year-old Tiahleigh Palmer, police say.

Police returned on Tuesday to the river bank where the girl's body was discovered, in the hope of finding more clues into the girl's death after her body was found on November 5.

"We are getting versions [of events] but as you can imagine the versions sometimes contradict each other," Superintendent Hutchinson said.

"There are inconsistencies. We need then to go out and investigate that further to try to form or obtain some kind of corroboration of what we've been told."

He said the details of the interviews were not being released for operational reasons.

Superintendent Hutchinson said reports Tiahleigh's Facebook account was deactivated on the day she disappeared had not been verified by police.

He also confirmed the girl wasn't a big social media user and did not have regular access to a mobile phone.
