    On November 15, 1987, in a remote area near the north shore of Twin Buttes Lake southwest of San Angelo, Texas, two boys, who had gone there fishing, discovered the skeletal remains of an unidentified male. Lying in a field at the end of a caliche road off of FM 2166, the deceased was wearing jeans, undershorts, and white socks (no shoes) when he died. An autopsy revealed the young man was between 17-27 years old, probably White and Caucasian or Hispanic, stood 5’8, and weighed about 160 pounds. The cause and manner of death could not be determined, and while there were no signs of foul play, investigators think eventually the case will be determined a homicide based on the fact he was found without shoes in the middle of mesquite bushes with clean white socks. That’s why the case is known by some investigators as “White Socks”.

    Sheriff's Office Discovers New Evidence on Unidentified Body Found at Twin Buttes

    By Matt Trammell | Dec. 3, 2019 10:44 am

    SAN ANGELO, TX -- The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office has discovered new evidence in the case of the John Doe found at Twin Buttes in 1987.

    <snip>
    Recently the Sheriff's Office was notified that the ethnicity breakdown from FTDNA shows a large European portion (mostly Spain) likely comes from those that colonized and settled in Central and South America. His mtDNA haplogroup also most closely represented a Columbian sample, so it's probably a good bet that he was from somewhere in this area.

    Looking at the DNA matches the shared segments are all pretty small which indicates very distant shared ancestors. Right now the plan is to keep checking back in on the matches regularly on GEDmatch and FTDNA in hopes that a closer match pops up.
