Cold case: Where did Tommie Jackson go?

    RICHARD PRIOR
    Feb 14, 2010 at 12:11 AM

There were few surprises in the routine that marked Tommie Jackson’s life, right up to the morning he dropped his daughter off at school then vanished.

    That was three years ago.

“This case is a complete mystery,” said Detective Howard “Skip” Cole III with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

“Here’s a hard-working guy,” Cole continued. “By all accounts, a good father, a good husband. No enemies. He didn’t owe anybody money. And he just disappeared.

“It’s literally one of those cases that we never really got any information on. It’s kind of bizarre.”

    Detective Sean Tice agreed:

“To vanish off the face of the world like he did is just weird.”

Jackson, 49, worked from 2 to 10 p.m. each day at a rest area off Interstate 95, said his wife, Brenda. He was regularly back home by 10:30.

Nobody noticed anything out of the ordinary the morning of Jan. 12, 2007, Brenda Jackson said. It was a Friday.

Tommie Jackson dropped 8-year-old Erykah off at Cathedral Parish School on St. George Street in St. Augustine.

“Erykah was in the back seat,” Brenda Jackson said. “He reached over and gave her a hug.

“He said, ‘I love you; I’ll see you later.’ That was it.”

Tommie Jackson would normally go home, tend to a few chores, then get ready for work, his wife said. There were signs he had done that, she said.

Mrs. Jackson called her husband around 4 p.m., as usual. What wasn’t usual was her call went straight to voice mail.

“I figured his phone needed charging,” she said.

She began to get worried when he wasn’t home and didn’t phone by 11:30.

That’s when she called her husband’s co-workers and was told he wasn’t there.

“I thought it was a joke,” she said. “All his life of working, he would never not go to work.”

Brenda Jackson was thoroughly familiar with her husband’s habits. They had met when he was 19 and she was 18. They had been married for 28 years.

Since Jackson and his 1989 Pontiac 6000 both disappeared, Cole and Tice feel strongly that it may be easier for them to get a lead by focusing on the car as much as on the man himself.

The gray four-door car had the license plate X20EXQ.

“The key to me is the car,” Tice said, because anyone who attacked Jackson would have problems making the Pontiac disappear.

Brenda Jackson isn’t so sure that would help much.

“That car probably wouldn’t even make it out of Jacksonville,” she said. “He just used that car going back and forth to work.

“He didn’t think it would go any farther than that.”

Brenda Jackson was also familiar with her husband’s bouts with depression, “when he was down in spirit.”

“It happened maybe once or twice a year,” she said. “He’s so active, it’s not noticeable.

“When he was in his high points, he would go hang and give with the guys down at the corner store. But mainly, 95 percent of the time, he was coming back home.

“He comes out of it. He’s always known how to bounce back.”

The detectives had known about Jackson’s mental health issues and don’t believe they have anything to do with his disappearance.

“It was never a situation where he would disappear,” said Cole. “He’s always been able to deal with it.

“So as far as maybe being depressed and doing something to himself, the family feels it is very unlikely that occurred.

“You’ve got to assume after three years, he probably met with some kind of foul play. That’s the way we’re looking at it now.

    Details of Disappearance
Jackson was last seen in St. Augustine, Florida on January 11, 2007. That morning, he dropped his young daughter off at Cathedral Parish School on St. George Street. His routine after that would be to go home, do chores and be ready for work by 2:00 p.m. He worked a 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. shift at a rest area off Interstate 95, and would be home by 10:30 p.m.

There is evidence that Jackson arrived home after he dropped his child off at school, but he never showed up for work that day, and when his wife called him as usual at 4:00 p.m. the call went straight to voice mail. He has never been heard from again.

Jackson's gray four-door 1989 Pontiac 6000 with the license plate numbered X20EXQ disappeared with him. His wife stated the vehicle was in poor condition and she didn't think he could have gotten very far in it.

Jackson's wife said her husband went through periodic bouts of depression, but investigators don't believe his mental health issues had anything to do with his disappearance and they don't think he tried to harm himself. He is described as a dependable, reliable man who had never left without warning before.

Foul play is suspected in his case, which remains unsolved.

Missing, Not Forgotten: Working a cold case

    JENNA CARPENTER
    Dec 12, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Missing persons cases go cold when investigators believe they have exhausted every available lead - and each case goes cold at a different time in the course of an investigation.

“If you have that case, where there’s no activity on financials, there hasn’t been activity on their cellular account and nobody’s seen them, those cases are going to go cold a lot faster because you don’t have anything to go on,” said Gene Tolbert, a major crimes unit detective for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Another challenge is keeping cold cases current as new generations of detectives come to the department.

“We try to keep longevity in major case detectives, and we’ll have roundtable discussions about them,” he said.
