Officials in Screven County still searching for missing man

Week three in the search for a missing Screven County man has crews in acres of wooded areas near his home intensely looking for any clues in his disappearance.

Search crews have combed through a thousand acres to look for any trace of Travis Tankersley. K9 teams walked through some of the thickest woods for any sign of the man, who's been missing since early August. This search went through areas off Quail Road, Buck Creek Road, and more. They sniffed for any sign that Tankersley could have wandered there or been brought there by someone else.

"We honestly believe if he's still around, he's out here. We've brought out everything today; dogs, divers, horses," said Sheriff Mike Kile, Screven County.

GBI agents joined the search last week for the possibility that Tankersley met with foul play. Sheriff Kile says, the longer they go with no signs of him, the less chance he's still alive.

"The family needs closure, and we've got some volunteers out here who're among the hardest working people you'll meet in your lifetime. They're working hard. It's hot and humid and they're doing all they can to bring this boy home," Sheriff Kile said.

A $4,000 cash reward is being offered for information regarding what happened to a missing Screven County man.

The reward offered is a joint effort between the Screven County Sheriff's Office and the family of Travis Tankersley, said Screven County Sheriff's Investigator Brett Dickerson.

Tankersley was last seen leaving a friend's house on Buck Creek Road in early August, he said.

There has been no evidence pointing to foul play, said Bahan Rich, special agent-in-charge of the Statesboro office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Screven County Sheriff Mike Kile said a shirt that was determined to be Tankersley's was found near a dumpster in the area where he was last seen.

Keeping the Memory Alive in Georgia

The sister of a man killed near Swainsboro in 2002 is planning an event in hopes that it will raise awareness of unsolved murders and other questionable deaths.

The program will be held from 2–6 p.m. at Patriot’s Park at 102 South St. in Swainsboro. There will be a silent auction, karaoke, a performance by the Silversal band and special guest speakers. Also, the first 150 guests will receive a free barbecue sandwich donated by Jomax Barbecue, she said.

Travis Tankersley, reported missing in Screven County since August 2016, still has not been found, although authorities found his shorts near a dumpster on Buck Creek Road.
