The officer's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the paper reported.

Two suspects killed, guard shot outside ‘Draw Muhammad’ contest in Texas

The contest was described as a “free speech” event by its sponsor, the American Freedom Defense Initiative. It offered a $10,000 top prize and featured Dutch politician Geert Wilders, who is known for his anti-Muslim views, as its speaker.

The shooting began about 7 p.m., around the time the event was finishing up.

“Right when we were beginning to drive away, we heard gunshots,” Cynthia Belisle, who attended the event with a friend, told NBC News. “We thought they were fireworks, but they were not.”

Belisle said that dozens of cops sprang into action and that she was told to stay put.

Former terror suspect well known to the FBI is named as one of two gunmen shot dead by cops after attack on anti-Islam 'draw Muhammad' art contest near Dallas

A former terror suspect has been named as one of the gunmen shot dead by police after two attackers blasted an unarmed security guard in the ankle during an anti-Islam art contest in Texas on Sunday night.

Two heavily-armed men, who are believed to have been carrying explosives, were killed by police after opening fire outside the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Dallas, at around 7pm during a controversial event where caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad were being displayed. Followers of Islam deem that any physical depiction of the prophet - even a positive one - is blasphemous.

A senior FBI official has identified one of the men as Elton Simpson, who was previously the subject of a terror investigation, according to ABC News.

Simpson, identified in court papers as an American Muslim, had been convicted of lying to federal agents about his plans to travel to Somalia five years ago, but a judge ultimately ruled it could not be proved that he was heading there to join a terror group. He was placed on probation.

After his identity emerged, FBI agents and a bomb squad swarmed Simpson's apartment in north Phoenix, Arizona and used a robot to carry out the first sweep of his home, the channel reported. Investigators are reviewing computer records from materials found at the home.

Garland Shooting Suspect Elton Simpson's Father: ‘My Son Made a Bad Choice’

The father of one of the suspected gunman in the Garland, Texas shooting told ABC News today that his son “made a bad choice.”

“We are Americans and we believe in America,” Dunston Simpson said. “What my son did reflects very badly on my family.”

Simpson’s son, Elton, was identified earlier today to ABC News by a senior FBI official as one of the suspects in Sunday’s failed attack on a Texas community center that was hosting an event displaying cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad. Elton Simpson and another man were killed by a police officer after they opened fire on the officer and a security guard, local police said.

Garland Officer "Saved Lives" at Prophet Muhammad Art Contest, Police Say

While the names of the gunmen have not been confirmed by police, a federal law enforcement official told NBC 5's Scott Gordon one of the suspects in the shooting is Elton Simpson. NBC News also confirmed the name of the second suspect as Nadir Soofi, Simpson's roommate.

Simpson, 31, has been known to the FBI since 2005 and was placed on a terror watch list in 2011 following a criminal case that resulted in his passport being revoked, but later returned.
