SANTA ANA — Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton will join five other top prosecutors in Orange County Tuesday morning to announce an update in the Golden State Killer case.

Joseph DeAngelo, 72, of Citrus Heights, the alleged notorious serial killer and rapist, already has been charged with 13 murders for slayings up and down the state. Investigators also believe he is responsible for more than 50 rapes across California, including nine in Contra Costa during 1978 and 1979. DeAngelo was alleged to have been known as the “East Area Rapist” during the East Bay attacks.

Becton is the only district attorney attending the news conference who did not have a homicide linked to the Golden State Killer. So, will her office file the first rape charges against DeAngelo?

A Contra Costa DA spokesman Scott Alonso declined to comment Monday on what announcements will be made at the news conference.

This dude will never see the light of day again. Except when he's traveling to another trial.

They've probably released him for good behavior.

They need to stop doing that! If his behavior was the least bit "good" he wouldn't be behind bars in the 1st place.

East Area Rapist suspect arraigned on 13 new charges
Joseph DeAngelo faces 13 counts of murder, other charges in 6 California counties

    Updated: 7:23 PM PDT Aug 23, 2018

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —

The man suspected of being the East Area Rapist was arraigned in a Sacramento court Thursday on 13 new rape-related charges, along with 13 murder charges spanning six counties.

The charges against 72-year-old Joseph DeAngelo were amended Tuesday to include many additional special circumstances, as well as 13 counts of kidnapping for robbery in six counties.

"The complaint alleges numerous crimes over multiple counties and dates," Judge Michael Sweet said before reading each of the 26 charges.

    [......]
Prosecutors also questioned whether DeAngelo qualified for a public defender and asked the court to review his finances.

DeAngelo's next court date is scheduled for Dec. 6, vacating a September court appearance.

Suspected ‘Golden State Killer’ to Keep Public Defender, Can Cost Taxpayers $20 Million

A suspected California serial killer cannot afford a private attorney, a judge ruled Thursday, keeping in place a public defender in a case expected to cost taxpayers $20 million.

Joseph DeAngelo, a former police officer facing 26 murder and kidnapping charges, could be required to reimburse the county to the extent he is able after the trial, Judge Michael Sweet said in Sacramento Superior Court.

DeAngelo, 73, stood in an orange jumpsuit inside a courtroom cage. He appeared to have lost weight in jail since his arrest in April.

Sacramento County has asked the state to pick up the cost of prosecuting and defending DeAngelo, a county official said Wednesday.

Authorities believe he committed 13 murders and more than 50 rapes in the 1970s and 80s spanning six California counties. The rape cases happened too long ago to be prosecuted, so prosecutors brought 13 related kidnapping counts.

DeAngelo has not entered a plea.

Diane Howard, the public defender who has represented him since his arrest, did not comment after Thursday’s hearing. She represented DeAngelo in court alongside two other defense attorneys.

Prosecutors from all six California counties where DeAngelo was charged — Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Orange, Ventura, Tulare and Contra Costa — appeared in court.

The parties are next due in court April 10.

Howard submitted a sealed affidavit detailing DeAngelo’s economic situation that Sweet used to make his determination.

The search for the serial killer, known by nicknames such as the East Area Rapist and the Golden State Killer, vexed authorities for decades and left victims’ families without answers. Finally in early 2018 investigators used DNA and a genealogical website to identify and arrest DeAngelo.

The serial killer would monitor suburban neighborhoods and sneak into homes at night, authorities said. If a couple was home, he would tie up the man, place dishes on his back and threaten to kill both victims if he heard the plates fall onto the floor while he raped the woman.

TULARE, Calif.—The man accused of being California’s Golden State Killer has been cleared of involvement in the 1975 murder of a 14-year-old girl in the Central Valley, prosecutors said on Jan. 8.

DNA testing excluded Joseph DeAngelo as a suspect in the murder of Donna Jo Richmond and—along with other evidence—indicates that another man was rightfully convicted of the slaying, according to a conviction review.

The girl vanished on Dec. 26, 1975, while bicycling from a friend’s house to her home near Exeter. Her body was later found in an orange grove. She had been strangled, beaten, and stabbed 17 times.

A convicted sex offender, Oscar Clifton, was convicted of kidnapping, attempted rape, and murder. He was sentenced to life in prison and died there in 2013.
