    Details of Disappearance
Vanessa was last seen leaving her family's residence on Winton Way in rural Winton, California at approximately 7:00 p.m. on May 31, 1997. She was planning to take her usual walk through the neighborhood at the time. She usually went with her mother, but this time she went alone. She has never been heard from again. Her family notified police when she did not return by dark.

Vanessa's walking stick was discovered along the side of Mercedes Avenue in Winton shortly after she failed to return home that evening. The location was along Vanessa's normal route and was approximately 200 yards east of her residence. There was no sign of her at the scene. She left her purse behind; it contained her savings. She also left a cherished watch at her home.

Vanessa does not have a history of running away and is described as being close to her family members. She belonged to a Mennonite church at the time of her disappearance. Authorities do not believe she left of her own accord. Her case remains unsolved.

Girl missing for 19 years, mother still hopeful

WINTON, Calif. (KMPH) — In 1997, a Merced County girl went for a walk and never came home. Her family has been searching for her ever since and they are determined to not give up hope that she's still alive.

It was next to an almond orchard outside of Winton near her family's home where 15-year-old Vanessa Smith was going for an evening walk. That was 19-years ago and that was the last time anyone ever saw her.

Her mother Beverly Smith said, "She said mom I'm going to take my walk and I usually walked with her and checked on her and this one time I didn't."

Vanessa was last seen walking near an orchard behind her house. Smith said, "Vanessa was in the wrong place at the wrong time." Since that day her mother has not given up hope that her daughter is still out there. She has even kept her room the way it was when she went missing.

She said, "We do want her home and we feel like she's out there. Everybody feels like she's out there." The Applebee's in Atwater will have a pancake breakfast this Saturday morning from 8 to 10 a.m. Tickets for that are $10 each. Money raised from that will help go towards billboards to help Vanessa's family find her.

Vanessa Smith has been missing since May 31st, 1997. She would be 34 today. She has blonde hair and blue eyes.

There is a $50,000 reward for anyone who has information leading to her whereabouts. If you can help call the Merced Major Crimes Unit at 209-385-7472

Merced County’s Vanessa Smith went missing 20 years ago today. The search continues

Beverly Smith stood near an almond tree Tuesday afternoon on Winton Way, the place where the last known traces of her daughter were found 20 years ago.

Her daughter, Vanessa, vanished exactly 20 years ago today. Smith’s old home, on the corner of Winton Way and Mercedes Avenue, was just 200 yards down from the almond tree, the spot where her then 15-year-old daughter’s walking stick was found.

Vanessa now would be 35-years-old. She vanished on May 31, 1997, at around 6 p.m. Smith said her daughter left the house that night to go on her regular walk around their neighborhood down by the almond orchards that surrounded their old home.
