    Do you recognise this woman?

Police investigating the suspicious death of a woman whose body was found on the state’s Central Coast at the weekend are appealing for public assistance as they try to identify her.

About 10.30am on Sunday 24 April 2016, emergency services were called to Snapper Point in the Munmorah State Conservation Area following the discovery of a woman’s body face down in water inside the blow hole.

    ...
The Homicide Squad together with Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command have formed Strike Force Elise to investigate all circumstances surrounding the woman’s death which they are treating as a homicide.

A post mortem examination is ongoing; however, it is believed the woman suffered a violent death having been stabbed numerous times.

The woman, who was found naked with no jewellery or other personal items, is described as being of Asian appearance, about 170cm tall, with a medium build, shoulder-length dark hair, and aged from her early 20s to mid 30s.

Police have released a computer generated image of the woman in the hope someone can help to identify her.

Snapper Point: Mengmei Leng named as murder victim as police release CCTV of last movements

    April 29, 2016

POLICE are appealing for information to piece together the final moments of the woman who was murdered at Snapper Point, on the Central Coast.

Mengmei Leng was this morning named as the victim who was stabbed and stripped before her body was flung into the blowhole last Sunday.

Police were called to the scene in the Munmorah State Conservation Area, around two hours’ drive from Sydney, at around 10.30am.

Ms Leng is a 25-year-old international student from China who was studying economics at the University of Technology Sydney.

She was reported missing to Campsie Police on Monday

Police have released CCTV footage of her shopping at Myer in Pitt Street last Thursday, April 21 and boarding a train from St James Railway Station, arriving at Campsie Railway Station about 4.30pm

It is hoped a member of the public will recognise her, or may have spoken with her, and come forward with information that helps police put together her last movements.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Jubelin said yesterday the woman sustained several stab wounds and would have experienced a horrific death.

“Our interpretation of the situation is that she suffered a violent assault prior to her death,” Detective Chief Inspector Jubelin said.

It is understood she had plans to meet up with someone she had met on social media later that night.

Did Snapper Point murder mystery victim go on fatal date?

    April 29, 20163:30pm

Ms Leng, who was known as Michelle in Australia, was an economics student at the University of Technology Sydney. She disappeared after a shopping trip to Myer last week.

Police are continuing to piece together Ms Leng’s movements over the long weekend and are appealing for anyone who may have seen or spoken with her during this time to come forward.

Chatter on social media sites this week suggested Ms Leng had plans to meet up with somebody she had met online.

Police have told news.com.au that they were aware of information circulating online but would not comment on specific details. Investigators are also pursuing a number of tip-offs to CrimeStoppers.

Detectives have spent the past few days canvassing the area and reviewing CCTV footage.

“We’re very creative in the way we can capture what has gone on in the area,” Insp Jubelin told reporters. “We are getting a pretty good understanding of what occurred in that area during that time.”

On Tuesday, police divers recovered “certain items from the water” near where the Ms Leng’s body was found. Police have declined to say whether the suspected murder weapon was among them.

Michelle Leng accused murderer Derek Barrett refused bail

    April 30, 2016 - 4:21PM

Michelle Leng was stabbed at least 20 times before she was bundled in a car, driven more than 100 kilometres and dumped in the ocean, police will allege.

On Friday afternoon, her uncle, Derek Barrett, 27, was arrested by NSW homicide detectives and charged with her murder. He was formally refused bail in Parramatta bail court on Saturday. He will appear in Burwood Local Court on Wednesday.

Mr Barrett's arrest came amid rampant and tenuous speculation that Ms Leng had been communicating with an online love interest which ended in a fatal encounter after she went missing on Thursday April 21.

It is inside the family home that she was allegedly murdered.

She valiantly attempted to fight off her attacker, and suffered a number of defensive wounds, but was overpowered and killed with at least 20 stabbing blows, the autopsy revealed.

It is believed CCTV footage captured a car entering the Lake Munmorah national park, almost two hours drive from Campsie, around 7am on Sunday morning.

Inside the car, police will allege was Ms Leng's body.

So this is where the story first began about Michelle meeting up with someone from online. I wonder if this aunt is married to that ^uncle??

Earlier in the week, Ms Leng's aunt told an Australia-based Chinese-language news site her niece's Facebook chat records revealed that, unbeknownst to them, she had recently met an Australian boyfriend.

"We looked at those photos, blonde hair, white skin, his eyes were very fierce, he didn't look friendly, lives in Wollongong," she said on Thursday in an interview that has been translated.

"If this boyfriend did something bad to her, Michelle would fight back, plus she never had a boyfriend before, this is her first."

When Fairfax Media asked the NSW police on Friday whether they were pursuing this lead, a police contact confirmed it was not their main avenue of inquiry.

    Seems strange doesn't it.
Was the story regarding the boyfriend the cover-up story from the Aunt? Did she know Michelle had been murdered in the home?

Earlier reports said Michelle lived with her aunty and cousin at Campsie - there was no mention of the Uncle then, or that he was living in the house.
First reports said that she had not arrived home but now, its known that Michelle was murdered at home at Campsie -
I wonder who from the family reported her missing - and where were her aunty and cousin at the time she was murdered.
