Search for 7-year-old girl who went missing in Wise County​

A number of local law enforcement departments are taking part in a search for a 7-year-old girl who was reported missing on Wednesday night.

A parent called the Wise County Sheriff's Office just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday saying her daughter, Athena Strand was nowhere to be found.

Wise County Sheriff's Office, DPS, Texas Rangers, Fort Worth PD, Bridgeport PD, local fire departments, Wise County EMS, Search Rescue One and several others searched the area around the 200 block of County Road 3573 in Paradise.

A massive search is underway in Paradise on Thursday morning.

Wise County Sheriff Lake Akin said a parent said she reported her daughter, 7-year-old Athena Strand, missing at 6:40 p.m. after the girl disappeared from her room. The mother said she searched for about an hour before contacting the sheriff's office for help.

The sheriff's department said there was an argument between Strand and her mother, and that the child's father wasn't home at the time. Additionally, they said foul play isn't suspected and that Strand likely ran away. However, authorities are not ruling out someone took her.

"We're looking at everything from the criminal standpoint or just a missing child so we're not going to leave anything unturned and we're not going to put the blinders on either," said Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin. "It could be any number of things and we're looking at all those possibilities."

Does she always wear boots in the house? not saying it's impossible, many do wear their shoes inside. Many don't though.

"We know that there was a little bit of an argument between her and her step-mom last night but it isn't anything unusual," said Akin. "There was that argument then step-mom went to fix dinner, came back to get Athena, and Athena wasn't in her room."

"We definitely don't believe Athena ran off," said Keeland Kulbeth, Athena's aunt and sister to Athena's mom.

Wise County asks volunteers to stay clear amid search for Athena Strand

The 7-year-old was last seen Wednesday evening, officials say.

As crews continue to search for missing 7-year-old Athena Strand, the Wise County Office of Emergency Management is asking people hoping to volunteer in the search to stay clear of the area.

"At this time, we will not be utilizing volunteers to assist with the search," the department said Friday morning. "Arriving on scene at a large scale incident without being requested to a) offer to help or b) bring unrequested supplies, takes time and resources away from the task at hand."

The department advised people that the best way to assist in finding Athena was to share and "respect the information posted by official sources only." Any requests for supplies or volunteers would be announced on Wise County's social media.
