Search for 7-year-old girl who went missing in Wise County

A number of local law enforcement departments are taking part in a search for a 7-year-old girl who was reported missing on Wednesday night.

A parent called the Wise County Sheriff's Office just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday saying her daughter, Athena Strand was nowhere to be found.

Wise County Sheriff's Office, DPS, Texas Rangers, Fort Worth PD, Bridgeport PD, local fire departments, Wise County EMS, Search Rescue One and several others searched the area around the 200 block of County Road 3573 in Paradise.

A massive search is underway in Paradise on Thursday morning.

Detailed timeline here: (copied below link in case it doesn't work)

This will be a LENGTHY post regarding the search for #AthenaStrand.
If anyone would like to share to the page Where Is Athena Strand, feel free.
I'm a reporter with WFAA and covered this story Thursday.
The Wise County Sheriff's Office just wrapped up a presser about the search and gave us little new details aside from the fact that this has involved into more of an *investigation rather than a search.
Much of the narrative given to us yesterday by the sheriff hasn't changed.
--Athena got off her bus around 4:15 PM at her father's home.
--Her father wasn't present whenever Athena went missing and was on his way to a deer hunting trip.
--At some point, Athena's *stepmother told police that she got into an argument with the little girl, which the sheriff said wasn't unusual.
--The *stepmother went to make dinner, and then when she went to find Athena, she wasn't in the house.
--The sheriff said the *stepmother called 911 at 6:40 PM. Yesterday the sheriff told us 5:40 PM.
--That's when police searches began along with EMS and volunteer firefighters.
--Search dogs were used Wednesday night along with thermal imaging from the air with the help of helicopters from DPS and FWPD. Nothing was found but wildlife.
--Investigators called off the search around 4:30 AM Thursday morning and then started again a few hours later.
--This time, roughly 200 citizens joined in and combed over the area. Nothing was found at all on Thursday.
--Nothing has been found since. No evidence. Nothing of Athena's.
--The sheriff says that registered sex offenders have been interviewed within the area.
--Some search dogs found a scent that went around the house but nothing outside of the perimeter.
--The FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation, TXDPS, and U.S. Marshals all are assisting.
--The FBI is using digital resources to help the sheriff's office. This would likely include cell phone data, social media posts, etc.
No family has spoken with me yet aside from Athena's biological mother and her aunt.
--Athena's biological mother, Maitlyn Gandy, spoke with me yesterday and said she can't conceive that Athena would wander off.
--Told me that Athena was staying with her biological father for the school semester and was supposed to trade custody for Christmas.
--Athena's mother told me that the little girl is afraid of the dark and that she is known to go to neighbor's homes or for a walk but has never wandered off like this before.
--Athena's aunt, Keeland Kulbeth, told me that something doesn't feel right about all of this and that she just wants Athena to come home.
I did ask the sheriff if CPS has ever visited the biological father's home, and he told me has no knowledge of that. We've reached out to CPS about it, and those records are confidential.
I'm looking into both father's and stepmother's backgrounds, like many of you have, and trying to get court records confirmed.
More importantly, DO NOT SPREAD INFORMATION UNLESS THERE IS EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT IT.
At this time--sheriff and FBI need tips.
If you have any, please call them and pray this little girl is found.

Athena Strand: Case Now an ‘Investigation’ After Massive Search for Missing 7-year-old Texas Girl

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office in Texas said during a Friday afternoon press conference that the search for 7-year-old Athena Strand, who vanished Wednesday from her father’s Paradise home, will now focus more on the investigation.

According to Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin, the search for Athena will continue, but the case will turn more toward interviewing witnesses, accessing and reviewing digital devices, and other investigative measures.

“The search is continuing. It is more of a spotted search instead of kind of the grand search you saw yesterday,” Akin said, adding that, at this point, there is no evidence of foul play.

The sheriff said the stepmother was the only adult in the house at the time of Strand’s disappearance. The child’s father had left earlier for a deer hunting trip in South Texas and was south of Fort Worth when he got the call that his daughter was missing, Akin said. The father and stepmother as well as the child’s biological mother have all been cooperative with the investigation, he added.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement, including U.S. marshals, have made contact with all of the registered sex offenders who live in the area.

“Obviously it’s reason for concern when a child is not recovered within 24 hours,” Akin said when asked about the Amber Alert that was issued for the child Thursday afternoon. “It doesn’t necessarily mean we suspect foul play, but we understand that could be a possibility.”

Thank goodness. I was just coming in to announce she was found as well. I just saw it. Haven't even looked at details yet.

Oh SCRATCH that. I thought she was found alive. Darn it. :(

This is horrible. On IMel's channel, I didn't get to see it all, but I got the impression this man may have a not great background? And there was a post on I think his FB page from someone saying he raped her at 16 and she has been saying so for eight long years and no one would believe her and now a little girl was dead.

The days of Fed Ex doing background checks is over or so it seems. Sounds like most of their drivers are contracted these days or they hire services.

I wonder how often he had delivered here.

What necessarily would a background check found though if he had never been convicted of anything? All they would have checked is his criminal record, driving record and possibly a credit check.

This just goes to show that NO ONE can be trusted around your kids anymore! My boys used to think I was mean because I wouldn't let them spend the night at other kids' houses unless I knew their parents VERY well. They were allowed to have kids spend the night with us, if they wanted. That was 20 years ago and it's only gotten worse. They get it now!

One thing I read says his fb(?) says he put occupation as Uber driver. I sure wonder how many stories will come out now about if he creeped people out or not.

I have no idea but from what it seemed they were saying (again didn't get to watch it intently or all of it) he may have a record which a check would have revealed.

What I am seeing is that he has no criminal record, but who knows how extensively they looked, but that would be the same for any background check. It all depends on how in depth they actually look. Most only pay for the bare minimum.

Yeah I see in recent news he seems to have had no record. I was under the impression he had one. Maybe they were talking like of things he allegedly did like raping the 16 year old, etc. and thinking he had one or may have.

Still I doubt they do a thing where contract drivers are involved when it comes to checking anything out.

They have to or it could be a DOT violation and they are being responsible for a LOT of $$ in product in their trucks that FedEx is responsible for. Nearly all drivers for FedEx are "contract" drivers here. About the only real employees are everybody else besides the drivers at the FedEx hub by me.
