Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

Police Hope $50,000 Reward Will Help Crack Cold Case Of Murdered 15-Year-Old Girl​

Laralee Spear was “abducted, shot and killed” after getting off her school bus 27 years ago, a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office statement read. At the time, Spear’s body was found near a burned-down house about a quarter-mile away
from her family’s home in DeLand, Florida.

The sheriff’s office statement included the investigators’ theory on the final moments of Spear’s life. “It’s believed her killer took her shortly after she got off the bus around 3:15 p.m.,” according to the statement.

“Expecting her home as usual,” the statement continued, “Laralee’s worried mother called 911 to report her missing around 4:05 p.m. Deputies were on scene in minutes, and an Air One pilot spotted her body near the abandoned structure around 5:35 p.m.”

Authorities announced the $50,000 reward for new information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer on April 25, the 27 anniversary of Spear’s death.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood also appeared in the video and said, “I think for generations of deputies in the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office – everybody wants to see this case closed.”

Chitwood said that the sheriff’s major case unit recently met with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to discuss how new technology and techniques could help crack the cold case, according to the statement.

“If you know something, please just come forward, just tell something even if you think it’s the most useless piece of information, just speak up,” Bussell said in the video. “One little thing can make a world of difference, can bring peace to Laralee, can bring us hope and closure.”

This is getting ridiculous. Roll the defendant in in a plexiglass phone booth sized thing with wheels, start making 'em. Put the judge behind plexiglass. Or make it all bulletproof glass, etc. Security for courthouses is a good thing anyhow right? Let's just halt justice right? Doesn't matter what anyone thinks of Covid, but if this is going to continue, it is time they figure out ways to proceed in all areas, whether the risk is high or low. If it is to be a new way of life, then start figuring it out already for goodness sakes. Js.
 
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey serial killer known as the “Torso Killer” pleaded guilty Tuesday to two 1974 murders, finally closing the cold-case deaths of teenage friends who had left home for a trip to the mall and never returned.

Richard Cottingham, 74, is currently in state prison on a life sentence for other murders. He has claimed he was responsible for up to 100 murders, but authorities in New York and New Jersey have linked him to nine so far — not including the two 1974 murders — though they believe the death toll is higher.

Cottingham has been in prison since 1981 but confessed to three of the murders, dating back to the late 1960s, last year.

He appeared virtually in court Tuesday to admit to the slayings of 17-year-old Mary Ann Pryor and 16-year-old Lorraine Marie Kelly.

Cottingham is known as the “Torso Killer” for brutally dismembering his victims by cutting off their limbs and heads. Mary Ann and Lorraine were found five days after they went missing — their nude, battered bodies discovered facedown in the woods of North Jersey.

Mary Ann and Lorraine left their North Bergen homes on Aug. 9, 1974, for a trip 13 miles (20.92 kilometers) north to a Paramus mall. They had planned to take a bus there to buy bathing suits for a trip to the Jersey Shore.

Lorraine was reportedly found with a beaded bracelet and a necklace that read “Lorraine and Ricky,” a reference to her boyfriend. Mary Ann was discovered with a gold cross, a gift from her godfather.

I thought we had a thread but it must have been before the crash. This, while I can read and comprehend the reasons, DISGUSTS me. It is just WRONG. This woman got away with too much already. She agreed to these terms repeatedly. And apparently the State nor the Judge covered or thought of this possibility of the way they are looking at it... Hmmm. Seems to me too she had a very high powered attorney who brokered a way too sweet deal who also should have well advised her of what she was agreeing to... I wonder just where this "oversight" or "mistake" came from... Unreal but somehow not surprised...

Last I knew her nursing license was not even revoked yet... SMDH.
