On April 6, 2019, nine-year-old Kyle Alwood killed five family members after starting a fire in a mobile home in Goodfield, Illinois.[1][2] The nine-year-old boy was charged with the deaths on October 8.[3]

Incident

At around 11:00 pm, a fire was reported in the central area of Peoria near the village of Goodfield, Illinois. Firefighters came a few minutes after the call. Five bodies, three children, all under three years old, Kathryn Murray, aged 69, and Jason Wall, aged 34, were all found dead from smoke inhalation.[4] Katrina Alwood, aged 27, and her son Kyle both survived the fire.[5]

Charges

Nine-year-old Kyle Alwood was taken into custody and charged with murder six months after the incident. The child was charged with 5 counts of murder, two counts of arson, and one count of aggravated arson. If convicted, Alwood could face five years of probation.[6][7]

People can be mad for what I say. 5 yrs probation will not teach this kid anything. The mother just gives excuses and says she couldn't save anyone else. But he survived. I am just judging by what I've read and by what I've read that the mother has said. She "says" he has all of these mental conditions. But then what is probation going to do?. If he could do this at 9 to his own family what would he do to others as a teen or adult?.

Kyle needs serious behavioral cognitive psychiatric help. He’s been programmed to commit this incredulously evil crime... Kyle‘s intelligence must be off the chain. He’s schizophrenic with brilliance. Please watch some of the final videos... This case has many layers...

Four years ago, Jason Wall, Katrina Alwood and Kyle Alwood lived in a weathered bungalow in East Peoria owned by Helen Wall, the mother of Jason and John Wall. The 72-year-old, who still lives in that dwelling with her surviving son, is reluctant to say much about the fire or charges, so as not to disparage Kyle Alwood.

“I have a heart of mercy,” she said softly.

Still, she had issues with the boy when he lived in the home with her and the others. She says the youth often would get into mischief, such as by repeatedly clogging toilets with objects.

“He was curious what would happen,” she said, her face turning frustrated. “I had to get a lot of toilets fixed.”

Still, she said he often could act well-behaved. And she never knew of any legal run-ins.

However, she said, he sometimes could turn troublesome. “He had a nature that was less than wonderful.”

For instance, she said, he sometimes treated his mother badly, even biting her. This happened even after the couple moved out with the boy and eventually had two children together. The cause, she said, sometimes seemed to be jealousy, after the births of his half siblings.

“He couldn’t stand someone else being fed,” Helen Wall said. ”... He didn’t know the meaning of right from wrong.”

In addition to the CBS interview, the Alwoods also spoke to the Chicago Tribune. It reported the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services took custody of Kyle Alwood shortly after the fire and placed him in a foster home.

DCFS had 13 previous contacts with the family of the boy, dating to his infancy, according to the Trib.

I am incredulous at the combination of B.S. and self delusion that characterizes that family.

It won't let me watch it.

O.K. Well I still have the same opinion. About the kid paying for what he did and about the mother. But like I said probation will do nothing. He needs to be locked up and if he does have these mental conditions then be treated. He is too dangerous out. His grandmother said he was jealous of his siblings and couldn't even stand someone else being fed. She needed to not keep having kids and concentrating on him then. I have a problem with her saying she couldn't save the other children telling them she was sorry. WHAT?! And heard Jason screaming and the children. I think she was partly to blame in being negligent. I saw DCS was contacted 13 times. But he did intentionally set the fire and killed 5 people.

I agree with all you say. Do you think a nine year old should be charged as an adult? What if he were eight? Seven? Six?

Legal experts told USA Today that murder charges against a 9-year-old boy are extremely uncommon and raise concerning questions due to the youth’s cognitive abilities at that age. However, murder charges against a child that young have happened in the past. A judge in Michigan dismissed a charge filed against a 9 year old boy accused of shooting his mother, declaring him incompetent because he was not yet 10 years old, according to The Associated Press.

A July 2019 United Nations report studied children “deprived of liberty.” It said, in part, “Childhood, the time between birth and reaching the age of 18 years, is when children develop their personality, their emotional relationships with others, their social and educational skills and their talents. International law recognizes the family as the natural and fundamental group unit of society. Children should grow up in a family environment where they experience love, protection and security. If children, for whatever reason, cannot grow up in a family, States shall ensure that they are cared for in a family-type environment. Placing children in institutions and other facilities where they are, or may be, deprived of liberty is difficult to reconcile with the guiding principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.”

I think this kid should. They talk about guidance. if a parent fails the state will provide an adequate home to receive such. But it's painfully obvious that kids get missedThe child does something like this. It's still the same crime. It's not society's fault and shouldn't be put at risk of a child who is seriously dangerous. Don't just lock him up. No. But put him in a mental facility. Then I believe if he still has problems moved to an adult facility or prison.

This is eight days before Kyle set the fire. Kyle loved his siblings. Kyle took care of them. Somebody had to!

Kyle Alwood ~ Nine

Kyle

*Stay with me here. If only for a moment... Who taught him the things he said and did? Where was he when he learned these words and actions? Didn’t he stay elsewhere for awhile? Like with his dad? Typical nine year olds don’t quickly automatically draw up a plan to set fire, kill relatives and execute it alone. Kyle enacted learned behavior.
