Family desperate for answers after 39-year-old woman vanishes: 'She needs somebody to advocate for her'

More than a week after a 39-year-old woman vanished in North Carolina, her family is desperate for answers.

Allisha Watts was last seen on July 16 leaving a house in Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

According to Watts' sister, Stephanie Johnson, Watts was last seen with her boyfriend of one year.

The couple met when Watts, who lives in Moore County, North Carolina, would drive to Charlotte to visit her cousin, Gwendolyn Utley, who is the boyfriend's neighbor, Johnson said. Now, every other Friday, Watts drives to Charlotte for the weekend, her sister said.

Johnson said Utley last saw Watts on the afternoon of July 16. The cousins planned to go to Charlotte's Bojangles Coliseum for a comedy show, Johnson said, and when Watts didn't show up, Utley reported her missing.

On July 18, Watts' 2023 black Mercedes Benz GLC 300 was found in Anson County, North Carolina, police said. Anson County is located southeast of Charlotte.

Watts' purse was found in her car and her phone was recovered at her boyfriend's house, according to Johnson. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police would not confirm.

Johnson described her sister, who works in the mental health field, as a "hard working, independent, reliable, resourceful, loving, kind, attentive person."

"She advocates for people's mental health, and right now she needs somebody to advocate for her," Johnson told ABC News on Tuesday.

"She's out there somewhere," Johnson said. "Every day that passes by, we are less likely to bring her home safe."

Man found in Mercedes belonging to missing Charlotte woman at Anson County DMV: Sheriff

According to the Anson County Sheriff’s Office, an ‘unresponsive’ man was found inside Watts’ vehicle on July 18 at the DMV in Anson County.

The man was transported from the parking lot to the hospital for treatment. The next day, on July 19, a Missing Persons Report was filed by CMPD on Watts. The Anson County Sheriff’s Office was able to connect the found vehicle to Watts and notified CMPD of the discovery. A search was conducted around the Anson County DMV for Watts and yielded no results, the sheriff’s office said.

CMPD traveled to Anson County in July to take custody of Watts’ vehicle. The sheriff’s office said the man, who was found in Watts’ car, was in the hospital from at least July 18 to July 20.

Timeline: Moore County woman's SUV, boyfriend found before she was even reported missing

WRAL News learned Tuesday that Allisha Watts' boyfriend was found unresponsive in the missing woman's SUV on July 18, the day before officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) filed a missing persons report for her.

According to her family and friends, Watts hasn't been seen or heard from since July 16, when she was seen with her boyfriend, James Dunmore, in Charlotte. Watt's friend Learen Blue said the 39-year-old traveled to Charlotte on July 14 with to see Dunmore in her black Mercedes SUV.

Two days later, on July 18, Charlotte authorities found a vehicle with Dunmore inside and have been using its GPS system to track where it had traveled. The SUV was in the parking lot of the Anson County DMV Office in Polkton.

On the day after her car was found, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) filed the missing persons report for Watts, 39. An officer logged the report at a home on Pamela Lorraine Drive in Charlotte.

On July 20, the Anson County Sheriff's Office was made aware of that report and linked the SUV to Watts.

However, it wasn't until Tuesday, July 25, that authorities announced they had found Dunmore in the car. The Anson County Sheriff's Office released a statement saying Dunmore had also been found along with the SUV on July 18.

Dunmore was unresponsive when he was taken to the hospital. His current condition and location is not known. Anson County Sheriff's Office said their last update on Dunmore's status was July 20, and he was still alive at that point. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police did not give an answer when asked about Dunmore's condition.

After the connection was made between the SUV and missing woman, CMPD and the Anson County Sheriff's Office searched the SUV. They also searched the surrounding area for Watts but did not find her.

Currently, Watts' whereabouts are still unknown. On Tuesday, the family was searching a field near Airport Road in Wadesboro.

Friends, family push for answers at vigil for missing Moore County woman

Friends and family of a missing Moore County woman held a vigil for her Tuesday evening.

39-year-old Allisha Watts went missing July 16 after taking a trip with her boyfriend to Charlotte. Two days later on July 18, her car and an unresponsive man, were located in a DMV parking lot in Anson County, but Watts was still missing.

Police filed a missing persons report July 19.

The vigil had over 400 people in attendance, with family taking turns coming up to the microphone and stating they're committed to find Watts.

Those in the crowd had questions about the timeline Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department gave after police said Tuesday the unresponsive man was Watt's boyfriend, James Dunmore.

"We want to know how they found the guy in her car unresponsive," Watts' friend Arthur Mason Sr. said. "There's got to be more answers that that."

Those in attendance also want to know why it took so long to determine Dunmore was the unresponsive man in Watts' car.

"We want to know why it has taken so long for them to reach the media," Cain said.

Attendees of of the vigil will be traveling to Charlotte Wednesday morning to ask the CMPD those very questions. Family and friends of Watts' were taking names of people who were traveling to Charlotte with them at the vigil. The group will also be part of a news conference Wednesday in Charlotte as they seek answers for Watts' whereabouts.

"The mission tomorrow is for us to get back to the bottom of what's going on with Allisha," Mason said. "We need to more answers than what we have right now."

I'd have to agree and ask the same questions they are asking as it makes no sense as it stands.

And what does unresponsive mean in the way they are telling it? Unconscious? They haven't said that. Does it mean when they question him he doesn't respond? And yeah, all the questions they are asking. How as he found? Was he unresponsive and in a car for days?. I'd imagine a very hot car. Or just for a little while and then explain that please?

Was he in a drug stupor? Injured himself? Or he simply wasn't responding to officers?

Out of the gate, there is something wrong here.

Did he call in, my gf was kidnapped and I've been shot and she's missing?

Yep, smells from the start. But what kind of report is this of "unresponsive" without further explanation of anything.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, 39-year-old Watts was last seen at her boyfriend James Dunmore’s home in Charlotte, on Pamala Lorraine Drive. Two days later, police found Watts’ Mercedes SUV in the parking lot of the Anson County Department of Motor Vehicles office in Polkton, around 45 miles from Charlotte.

The Anson County Sheriff’s Office said North Carolina state troopers saw the vehicle with a man later identified as Dunmore inside; he told the deputies he was taking a nap, but when the troopers returned to the lot three hours later, he was unresponsive.

He was taken to a hospital, but his current location and condition are unknown. The Anson County Sheriff’s Office said their last update came on July 20, and he was still alive at that time. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police did not provide an answer to a request about his status.

“There’s too many loopholes, too many unanswered questions we have,” Watts’ friend, Learen Blue, said. “We just need to know the last place she was at. We now know where they found her car and the unresponsive man in the car. Where is he? Where is Allisha? They’re not telling us anything.”

Well so he was responsive the first time they found him in the car, stating he was taking a nap and then the next time was not. That could mean anything to he overdosed, injured himself, drank himself into unconsciousness or simply refused to respond to officers, making him "nonresponsive". And, of course, she is nowhere in sight.

A DMV parking lot????

Well they either had enough case for a warrant or he gave permission. I'm guessing the first one because wasn't he also missing the last we heard? I could have that wrong but thought I read that here somewhere.

Media has said his whereabouts are unknown. However, I think that means that his whereabouts are unknown to THEM. And to her family. LE may very well know where he is but they aren't saying. I wouldn't be surprised if he's still in the hospital.

Ahh, that could be. I do remember having the impression though that LE didn't know and I thought WHAT? But if not under arrest and having left the hospital, they really couldn't stop him from high tailing it. I also thought I read he was out of the hospital but I most DEFINITELY could be wrong. All I'm able to do during long work weeks is skim most cases but I could swear I read that maybe in one article. I do read a link or two at times but don't get to for the most part. I can't recall. It may have been the other jurisdiction or something that said they didn't know where he was.

But I'll take your word for it because I'm definitely unsure.

Odd start to a case with some odd things and seeming to just be getting to where it is being put together.

Of course a big red flag from the start that he was in the vehicle and she was nowhere to be found. And then he was nonresponsive.

Family Demands More Answers From Police In Search For Allisha Watts

Family and friends are demanding CMPD release more information about a missing woman, last seen in Charlotte 10 days ago.

Allisha Watts disappeared while visiting her boyfriend. Her SUV was found days later in Anson County.

Family and friends gathered on the steps of CMPD Headquarters on Wednesday morning, frustrated police haven’t said more about where the 39-year-old missing woman could be.

“We just need to know where, where’s the last place that they know that she was at,” said friend Learen Blue.

The Moore County woman hasn’t been seen since July 16th.

Family and friends of missing North Carolina woman demand answers from police

Her loved ones expressed frustration with the investigation during a news conference in front of the department on Wednesday, demanding a meeting with Police Chief Johnny Jennings.

“We need to see you today. We need to sit at the table. We need to know what’s going on,” said Dearest Price, the Charlotte regional director of the National Racial Justice Network.

Police have not provided Watts’ family with any information on Dunmore’s condition, including his current location, Price said.

“We’re here for answers today because we want to know how we can help find our friend, our sister, our daughter,” said Watts’ friend Learen Blue. “We need them to come forth and tell us something so that we can help, because they’re being silent and not saying anything. It’s been too many days now for them not to give us information, or for them not to be actively doing something that we as her family and friends know that they’re doing.”

“Detectives are following all leads and using all available resources to locate Ms. Watts,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a tweet Wednesday. “Detectives have been in communication with immediate family members of Ms. Watts and their designee to provide updates and request relevant information.”

Not the most reliable source but...

As an investigation continues, The U.S. Sun can reveal that Dunmore has an extensive criminal history, including prior convictions for domestic violence and abduction in Alexandria, Virginia.

Additional information about those cases was not immediately available, but Dunmore was arrested for both offenses in March 2002 and was later sentenced to five years in prison and 15 years unsupervised probation upon his release.

Dunmore's criminal history also includes numerous other offenses, including arrests for stalking, malicious wounding, and assault and battery.

It's an odd case but really only because of the unusual things like saying he was nonresponsive, no further word about him or an arrest. Other than that, it of course seems to lean directly towards him. It's him and then LE as far as explaining him and how he was (but not explaining) that make it odd.

I mean of course it can be hoped she left on her own and left him with the vehicle but does anyone really think that here?

I don't really have a bit of hope in this case even with the little known. I hope I'm wrong though.

Where is Allisha? Family, friends mark 14 days in search across Charlotte

The search for a missing Charlotte woman has continued and today now marks day 14 since her disappearance.

The family has searched in Mecklenburg county as well as Anson county over the last two weeks.

While the family calls for more answers, law enforcement say they have been working countless hours to solve this case and bring Watts home.

Allisha Watts case: Missing woman’s boyfriend was noted as person of interest

New police records obtained by Channel 9 on Monday say that the boyfriend of a missing woman from North Carolina was at one point considered a person of interest in the case.

Channel 9′s Genevieve Curtis obtained a copy of the incident report from Anson County that was filed when investigators found Allisha Watts’ car outside of a Department of Motor Vehicles.

Watts was last seen in Charlotte on July 16, and investigators haven’t released many details about where she could have been.

The report was filed on July 20, and it says troopers found Watts’ boyfriend passed out inside. The report does identify her boyfriend by name, and it says he has a history of domestic violence. It also says he is considered a person of interest.

The report also stated that a woman came into the Anson County Sheriff’s Office trying to get things out of the Mercedes.

That report was filed before any public reporting of her disappearance.

Police investigate 'crime of murder' in case of missing Moore Co. woman Allisha Watts: Warrants

Police suspect missing Moore County woman Allisha Watts was murdered, according to search warrants related to the case.

The search warrants, first obtained by ABC affiliate WSOC, show that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have been searching for "any evidence of the crime of murder" as well as "materials that may be used to clean or cover up evidence of a homicide or assaults."

Investigators searched Watts' boyfriend's Charlotte home and an Audi vehicle parked at the home on July 26 -- that's 10 days after Watts was last seen alive.

The narrative for the warrant says "cellular data records that have been obtained show that Allisha's phone, her boyfriend's phone, and the vehicle all return to the home at 1633 Pamela Lorraine Drive at around 3 p.m. on 7/16/2023 and all three remain at that location until around 6 a.m. on 7/18/2023.

The search warrant shows that detectives seized clothing, cellphones, camera, tablet, laptop, memory card, swabs and photos during their search.

Investigators identified James Dunmore as Watts' boyfriend and the person who lives at the home they searched, but investigators stopped short of calling him a suspect in the case. Previous police reports say Dunmore has a history of domestic violence and identify him as a person of interest in the case.

Dunmore was also found unresponsive in Watts' car on July 18. The new warrant said he was unresponsive after apparently trying to kill himself.

At this point, Watts' whereabouts remain a mystery and there have been no arrests or charges filed in the case.

Allisha Watts’ boyfriend had domestic violence order filed against him

A domestic violence order was filed against Allisha Watts’ boyfriend months before her disappearance.

A woman, who is not Watts, filed the protective order against James Dunmore in March, according to documents obtained by WRAL.

The woman said she and Dunmore were spouses.

She accused Dunmore of grabbing her by the neck, hitting her in the face and holding her down so that she couldn’t breathe.
