2-year-old still missing after car connected to disappearance found in Texas, cops say
Officials in Texas and Oklahoma are working to find a 2-year-old boy who has been missing for a month.

Anthony Wayne Stroder was last seen on Jan. 27 in Midwest City, Oklahoma, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Anthony is believed to be with his non-custodial mother, 22-year-old Katelyn Thornton, and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Aurelio Cardenas, according to a Feb. 8 missing child alert from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Cardenas is a registered sex offender, officials said.

The vehicle the three were believed to be traveling in, a 2011 GMC Acadia, was found abandoned in Amarillo, authorities announced this week, according to KOCO.

“I believe the longer the child is missing, the further the endangerment becomes,” Potter County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Eric Hooker told KWTV. “Just based off of not being in his comfort zone, not being with, you know, accurate family members.”

Search for missing 2-year-old Midwest City boy continues after car found abandoned in Amarillo

The search for a missing 2-year-old Midwest City boy continues after authorities say the car he was last seen in was found abandoned in Texas.

An Endangered Missing Advisory that was issued on Feb. 8 for Anthony Stroder is still active almost three weeks later. Stroder is believed to be with his non-custodial mother, 22-year-old Katelyn Thornton, and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Aurelio Cardenas.

The alert states Cardenas is a registered sex offender according to the Texas Public Sex Offender Registry. When the alert was issued, authorities believed the three could possibly be in Oklahoma or the Texas Panhandle.

Fugitive of the Week: Convicted sex offender wanted in connection with missing 2-year-old
A convicted sex offender wanted in connection with a missing 2-year-old boy is the Amarillo Crime Stoppers "Fugitive of the Week."

Aurelio Ezequiel Cardenas, 27, of Amarillo, is wanted by the Potter County Sheriff's Office for for failing to register.

In 2019, Cardenas pleaded guilty to online solicitation of a minor.

His girlfriend, Katelyn Thornton, is accused of kidnapping her 2-year-old boy Anthony Stroder. She does not have custody.

Stroder was last seen on Jan. 27 in Midwest City, Oklahoma.

The 2011 GMC Acadia the couple was driving was found last week in Amarillo.

Anthony was last seen on January 27, 2025. He may be in the company of an adult female relative and an adult male. Anthony is missing from Midwest City, Oklahoma but the Potter's County Sheriff's Office in Texas is interested in his whereabouts.

Court documents: Family members were concerned for 2-year-old's safety before disappearing

Court documents revealed new details on the search for Anthony Stroder, a 2-year-old boy who has been missing from Midwest City for more than a month.

Investigators said they believe he was taken by his mom and her boyfriend, a convicted sex offender.

Three days before Anthony was last seen, his dad was awarded custody of him in court after telling the judge he feared for the child's safety. Court documents said the father was worried the child's mother would take the child on the run, and police said they believe that is exactly what happened.

"I honestly fear for her and Anthony's safety," Anthony's grandmother said in a text to his father.

That text was sent about one week before the 2-year-old was last seen.

This was one of the multiple times family members raised concerns about a man Anthony's mother was with.

On Feb. 9, a Kasey Alert was issued for Anthony's mother, Katelyn Thorton, along with 26-year-old Aurelio Cardenas, accusing them of kidnapping the boy.

Cardenas previously pleaded guilty to online solicitation of a minor, who court documents show was a 16-year-old girl.

He is still wanted by Texas law enforcement for failing to register as a sex offender in 2019.

Sheriff's deputies found their GMC Acadia abandoned in Amarillo last week, but there have been no signs of them.

Arrest made in case of missing 2-year-old from Midwest City as search continues

An arrest was made in the case of a missing 2-year-old boy from Midwest City, but it was not one of the people believed to be with the child.

Anthony Stroder was believed to be taken by his non-custodial mother and her boyfriend, who is a convicted sex offender.

Kelly Lynn, the attorney representing Anthony's father, said he knows the person arrested in the case. She is the mother of 27-year old Aurelio Cardena, the convicted sex offender believed to be with the child.

Lynn said Aurelio's mother knows more than she is saying.

"I pray to God that this child is OK and that this mother doesn't regret this for the rest of her life," Lynn said.

Lynn has been representing Anthony's dad since January, when red flags were first raised that the 2-year-old was in danger.

"He came to us because of his concerns with who the mother was exposing this child to," Lynn said.

Aurelio is currently wanted for failing to register as a sex offender in 2019, when he pleaded guilty to online solicitation of a minor. That minor was a 16-year-old girl.

Katelyn Thorton, the child's mother, lost custody of Anthony. After that, she and Aurelio took off with the child.

A new arrest report shows that Claudia Cardenas, Aurelio's mother, actually ditched and concealed the car for them. The report said that she admitted it all to the arresting officer.

Claudia is now facing charges for tampering with evidence. But Lynn said it's more than that.

"She has the information where they're at right now, and the D.A. out of Potter County, Texas. That is coming for my investigation straight talking with law enforcement involved. She is ready to confess and tell where the child is and the two that have taken the child, where they're at. But the D.A. has refused," Lynn said.

KOCO spoke with the district attorney over the phone on Tuesday. He said he cannot comment on pending cases but said that Claudia has "lawyered up."

Lynn said it's believed that the couple and Anthony are in Texas or Kansas.

Normally I feel better when the child was taken by a parent but not in this case. WTF is wrong with this mother, she's with a criminal, although it looks like they've both had mug shots some time in their past, clearly we know he has had a conviction of a sex offense. And she's with him AND takes the son along. They both look like real prizes and shouldn't be hard to spot if out and about. And his mommy is helping them and now under arrest herself. A mother helping a sex offender evade arrest, she sounds like a real prize.

WHY is the DA in TX refusing to give up info?? AT least that's how I read it... There is a child AT RISK.

Here's a tip to mothers who perhaps want custody of the children for real. Not sure that's the case with her though. Don't take up with a convicted SO who is supposed to register or is on the registry. DUH.

Why didn't she just abandon her child (also awful) and take off with the SO herself, why take the child?? Downright scary the fact they wanted the kid and think with his status it's a good idea to take the kid??? This mother needs to be nowhere near this child as her decision making well, I lack the words...

I'd said I'm not going to do new cases but lately been slipping and find old habits die hard. I am in the threads before I realized I clicked in. I need to get back to it but it's hard not to care.

I'd end with saying I hope they have the border crossings watching for them. With mom in jail, their help hopefully has dried up.
