Baby kidnapped with parents and uncle from Merced business, authorities say

A baby girl was kidnapped Monday from a business in Merced, Calif., along with her mother, father and uncle, authorities said.

An unidentified suspect, considered armed and dangerous, abducted 8-month-old Aroohi Dheri; her mother, Jasleen Kaur, 27; her father, Jasdeep Singh, 36; and her uncle, Amandeep Singh, 39, from a business off South Highway 59, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said they are still trying to establish a motive.

“We have a lowlife out here,” Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said in a video asking the public for its help. “We have no idea why the kidnapping, we have no motivation behind it. We just know they are gone.”

Warnke said that the suspect had not made any ransom demands or attempted to make contact with law enforcement.

While the Sheriff’s Office described only one suspect, Warnke mentioned in the video that other people are possibly involved in the kidnapping.

‘They Are Gone’: Police Seek Clues in Kidnapping of Baby and Family

The police in central California said they were investigating the kidnapping of an 8-month-old baby, her father, her mother and an uncle, who were taken from a business against their will on Monday.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday night that they did not know the motive for the kidnapping and that they believed that the suspect was armed and dangerous.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement that the 8-month-old, Aroohi Dheri; her mother, Jasleen Kaur, 27; her father, Jasdeep Singh, 36; and the baby’s uncle, Amandeep Singh, 39, were kidnapped from a business in South Merced, about 100 miles southeast of Sacramento.

“So far we have no idea why the kidnapping, we have no motivation behind it, we just know they are gone,” Sheriff Vernon Warnke, of Merced County, said in a video that his office released on Monday.

“We’ve got evidence to indicate that the individuals involved in this destroyed evidence in an attempt to cover the tracks,” the sheriff said.

The sheriff said that detectives were canvassing the county for more information and that they were using aircraft to search for evidence.

The person sought in the kidnapping was a “light-complected male with a shaved head,” who was last seen wearing a hoodie, the sheriff’s office said in a statement that included two photos of the man, who was not named.

PERSON OF INTEREST IN CUSTODY!

UPDATE - It was determined that the photo of the person at the ATM was not the person of interest that is in custody. The victim’s ATM card was used, however we are working with the bank to obtain the correct photo.

At approximately noon, working in conjunction with our local law enforcement partners, the Sheriff’s Office received information that identified Jesus Manuel Salgado (48-years-old) as a person of interest in this investigation. Prior to law enforcement involvement, Salgado attempted to take his own life. Salgado is in our custody, currently receiving medical attention and in critical condition.

The Sheriff’s Office, with the help of several law enforcement agencies continue to actively look for the eight-month-old Aroohi Dheri, her parents Jasleen Kaur (27), Jasdeep Singh (36) and her uncle Amandeep Singh (39) whom have not been found. Investigators continue to follow up on all leads and are working diligently to find the family. We continue to ask for the public’s help with any information that may assist us in locating the family’s whereabouts. If you have any information regarding this incident or the whereabouts of the victims, please call our tip line at 209.385.7547. The tip can be confidential.

The Sheriff’s Office will be holding a Press Conference on October 5, 2022 at 10:00AM at the Merced County Board Chambers located on the 3rd floor of the Merced County Build at 2222 “M” Street, Merced, Ca 95340. Due to limited space we are asking that all media personnel have media credentials with them.

California authorities arrested a person of interest amid an investigation into the kidnapping of a family of four, officials said Tuesday. The arrest came the day after officers located a truck belonging to one of the missing victims on fire outside Merced.

The Merced County Sheriff's Office announced Jesus Manuel Salgado, 48, was taken into custody following a brief search prompted by him using one of the victim’s credit cards at an ATM in Atwater. The city of Atwater is located less than 10 miles from Merced.

I am confused. That sure looks like the same guy as in the photos. They said the ATM photo was not the guy but they have another guy who is the correct guy is that what they're saying?

This was very quick and the guy was stupid to use the victims card but I have to wonder how they were able to find that out so quick. Generally banking info or cell phone records of an adult cannot be done without a warrant and some time etc Maybe they can just institute a watch for flagging if activity? But can't get details? Otherwise they got a warrant darned fast.

Fire of a vehicle, attempted suicide, use of a card. I don't think it bodes well for this family. But where do you take that many people and how do you control them? Did he act alone? Of course just holding and threatening the child would keep most people in line bu there are three adults versus this one man...

None of it sounds good to me either. But threatening their baby is a good way to make most people do what you want. Especially with a gun.
I wonder how much money he tried to withdraw? Did they do something to make him think they had a lot of money? Seems like quite a bit of effort for a debit card...

Banking rules and cell phones rules for access for LE are very different. Probably due to length of time difference between both industries and how long it takes laws to catch up.

It probably helped that they had the abduction on video, and found their vehicle on fire.

The search for a family of four kidnapped in California continues Wednesday after authorities took a person of interest into custody and revealed that restraints were used and surveillance video showed the victims being put in a truck.

Roughly an hour later, at 12:35 p.m., Merced police officers arrived at the truck owner’s address and met with a family member there. Officers tried to contact the couple and the child’s uncle, but they were not able to reach them.

Later Monday, at 1:04 p.m., officers with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office responded to a business on South Highway 59. “During the primary investigation, Detectives determined that the individuals were kidnapped,” the sheriff’s office stated Tuesday.

The kidnapping involved a gun and restraints, according to Deputy Alexandra Britton, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

A suspect was seen on surveillance video at a business putting two men into a truck, followed by a woman and a baby, Britton said.

Britton said the man’s family had contacted law enforcement and told them the man admitted being involved in the kidnapping. Law enforcement made contact with the man after the family’s call.

And most of us know that debit card withdrawals have limits

And most of us know that debit card withdrawals have limits
Interestingly I just did one and had to figure out on my bank site what my limit is being the bank is fairly new to me. My limit is $500 a day for cash but $1,000 more for transactions and I'm guessing that is typical. It did have an app though for getting that raised. I wonder how high one can have such a limit? It sounds to me as if this family may have been the owners of the business? I wonder if there was any cash kept at the business? But if so, why would the guy hit up an ATM...

Taking an entire family in restraints and at gunpoint, burning a vehicle seems pretty out there and extreme to net a few hundred dollars. And who knows what he did to the family. Of course many criminals aren't the brightest...

Video shows missing California family being kidnapped at gunpoint

The "sole lead" investigators have in the search for a kidnapped central California family is a man who is unconscious after a suicide attempt, authorities said Wednesday as they released security video of the kidnapping.

Jesus Manuel Salgado, who had been taken into custody as a "person of interest," is now being called a suspect by Merced County sheriff's investigators.

Before deputies could get to Salgado, 48, on Tuesday, he tried to die by suicide, officials said. He is in a hospital under sedation, with detectives ready to talk to him as soon as he regains consciousness, officials said.

He is under "medically induced sedation" because doctors need him under control to provide lifesaving care, Warnke said.

"They didn't want him thrashing around," Warnke said. "I can tell you that every time he's come near consciousness, he's been violent."

During a half-hour-long meeting with reporters at the Merced County Board of Supervisors chambers, the sheriff’s department released security video appearing to show the suspect kidnapping the family in two separate car trips.

A man walking down Highway 59 in Merced can be seen carrying a trash bag and walking into the family business. But just before he enters, he drops the bag and appears to pull out a handgun, video shows.

The man is wearing a hoodie, and his face is obscured by a mask.

No security cameras were inside the business, officials said.

Minutes later, at about 9:11 a.m., the armed man marches Jasdeep Singh and Amandeep Singh out the back of the business, Unison Trucking, with their hands zip-tied behind their backs.

They get into Amandeep Singh’s black Dodge pickup truck and drive away at 9:13 a.m.

The truck goes back to the family business at 9:19 a.m. before the suspect is seen taking Jasleen Kaur, who is carrying her infant, out the back door and into the truck and driving away.

the being seen on foot and dropping a bag before entering makes me wonder if this was not random. Was it just a guy that saw an opportunity, hoping they had cash on hand? How many other businesses/residences are near that might have cameras to see where he came from?

What makes me believe it was somebody they knew is how he seems alarmed enough to check on a person walking down the sidewalk enough to have to go to the opposite side inside of the business to see them on the other side. Most of us would not be bothered by just a random person walking down the sidewalk to even investigate one side, let alone go back inside the business and go to the other side, out the door to observe the person. He then goes out to meet the person like he was expecting him. I am pretty convinced this was not random. It looks like he was expecting him to me.

Yeah I'm even more confused after watching the surveillance video. Dad leaves the building (on the phone...with whom?) after seeing him walking on the sidewalk, and then walks WITH the suspect back to the building. Definitely agree that it doesn't seem random.

He was only gone for 6 minutes with the two men before coming back. 3 minutes each direction. He can't have made it that far...
Also, mom appeared unrestrained. I can see him pointing the gun at the mom/baby, saying to the men to put the zip ties on each other or else, and leaving with them. But WHY would mom not have called 911? I guess she could have been tied up inside and he untied her when he got back?

To me, by seeing the tape, it seems like he might have even been expecting the dude by the way he looks up at him and then calmly goes out to greet him and calmly and casually walks back to the building him with no apparent questions asked about what's in the bag, at the very least. He seems very unconcerned about the dude.

What was in that bag???

WTH? I would have first suspected at least one family member was in the know, knew the guy or was unconcerned when mom and baby were left but then they came back for them. But ALL four are dead so that doesn't fit at all.
