Authorities seeking help finding Windsor couple missing since July 1

Avillage of Windsor couple has been missing since July 1 and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public help in finding them.

On Wednesday, a family member reported that Bart and Krista Halderson were last seen on July 1 at their home and that they had planned a trip to Langlade County for the weekend and the family has been unable to confirm if they arrived safely, Lt. Brenda Reinen said in a report.

Their personal vehicles are accounted for, so there is no known vehicle to associate with the couple, the Sheriff's Office said.

‘We’ll find them:’ Son of missing Windsor couple says parents were going to lake cabin, but no sign of them

The son of a missing Windsor couple said his parents planned to go with friends to the family's cabin by Sawyer Lake more than three hours away, but says there's no sign of them there and there's been no contact with them for days.

"We'll find them," Chandler Halderson said of his parents, Bart Halderson, 50, and Krista Halderson, 53. "It's better to not listen to the negative theories," he says.

The younger Halderson said his parents planned to travel to their property in the community of Hollister in Langlade County Friday to do some minor repairs on their cabin and carry out general maintenance. He says friends were going with them and driving the group, but says he does not know who their traveling companions were.

Halderson said he received a text from his mother after his parents had apparently left on the trip.

"She got back to me on Sunday, said they made it safely," Halderson said.

Halderson said he contacted authorities after his parents did not return as planned Tuesday, and after a relative went to Hollister and did not find them. Halderson said authorities in Langlade County also checked the property, but found the cabin locked. "The sheriff said it looked like there wasn't anyone home," Halderson said.

Chandler Halderson holds out hope the inability to locate or contact his parents is benign.

"They're maybe at a casino, their phones off, no reception. Maybe they're on a boat, having some fun with their friends," Halderson said.

A Wisconsin man who reported his parents missing earlier this month has been arrested and charged with murder after his father’s dismembered remains were found in a wooded area several miles from home. Chandler Michael Halderson, 23, of Windsor, was initially charged with providing false information about a kidnapping or a missing person. On Monday, Dane County authorities tacked on charges of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilation of a corpse and hiding of a corpse. The remains of Bart Halderson, 50, were found late last week on a rural property in Dane County. Krista Halderson, 53, was still missing Wednesday

.
Chandler Halderson called 911 around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to report that his parents were missing. Dane County Sheriff’s Office officials said Halderson told investigators he’d last seen his parents July 1 when they’d left home to spend the holiday weekend at their cabin in White Lake with another couple he did not know.

Halderson said they had not returned as expected.

“Our investigators immediately began efforts to locate the Haldersons, including reaching out to the Langlade County Sheriff’s Office to check the property in White Lake, but no one was located at that residence,” authorities said in a statement.

A probable cause affidavit states that Halderson told detectives his mother had sent him a text message on July 4 that said she and his father made it safely to the cabin and were going to a parade that day.

Investigators soon learned that there had been no parade in White Lake on July 4.

Langlade County deputies went to the cabin and talked to neighbors there, and there was no sign that anyone had been to the cabin recently, the affidavit alleges.

Dane County detectives interviewed the couple’s friends, family and neighbors. They also talked to witnesses who placed Chandler Halderson at an acquaintance’s home in Cottage Grove, a town a little over 10 miles from Windsor.

He was spotted July 5 “reversing his vehicle with the rear hatch open in a field near a wooded area,” “After a consensual search of the area Chandler Halderson was observed in, a human torso was located within a short distance,” the remains have been identified as those of Bart Halderson. The medical examiner found that he died of “homicidal violence including firearm injury.” Bart Halderson was shot multiple times before his body was dismembered.

District Attorney William Brown said formal charges are expected to be filed against Chandler Halderson on Thursday.
“At this point, we have an extremely complex investigation,” Brown said, according to the State Journal. “We have a defendant who had six days to hide evidence of his crime and lied to police in the course of this missing persons investigation, which he instigated. He has lied dozens of times in the course of this investigation. “He is now seen leaving the area in which the dismembered remains of his father were found with gunshot wounds.”

Brown said at the bail hearing the Haldersons apparently never left Dane County. He said police found a bloody tarp they believe Chandler Halderson used to move his father’s body. The young man also asked people he knew for cleaning products over the holiday weekend.

Criminal Complaint: more remains found on Wednesday in Halderson investigation

More remains have been found in the continuing investigation into Bart and Krista Halderson's disappearance.

According to the criminal complaint filed when Chandler Halderson was charged with his father's death, remains were discovered on July 14.

Allegedly, the remains were found in a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Property along the Wisconsin River near the Town of Roxbury. The complaint also states Bart Halderson's remains were located the property of Chandler's girlfriend's family.

TIMELINE: What we know so far in the Halderson investigation

n the week since Bart and Krista Halderson were reported missing by their son, Chandler, the investigation into the case has evolved rapidly. What was a missing person's investigation is now a homicide investigation, with Chandler charged in the death of his father.

Now, with new information available as a result of a criminal complaint, we know the case begins before Chandler informed police of his parent's "disappearance." In order to help make sense of the investigation so far, 27 News has put together a timeline of events.

JULY 1

This is the date Chandler Halderson told police he last saw his parents.

JULY 2

According to the criminal complaint, Krista's co worker told police that she was supposed to work on this date, but did not show up. The absence was described as "not pre-arranged" and the behavior as unlike her.

JULY 3

On this date, the criminal complaint alleges a woman saw a man matching Chandler's description in the area of DNR property in Columbia County near Sauk City. The person she saw was reportedly wearing a backpack and walking away from the Wisconsin River.

This "odd" activity was noted several days before Bart and Krista were reported missing.

JULY 5

According to the criminal complaint, Chandler was at a property in Cottage Grove that belonged to family of his girlfriend. His girlfriend's mother's partner said he showed up at the property and she had given him permission to use the pool.

She said she saw a Subaru with the hatchback open (Chandler's parent's car) by a shed on the property and later saw Chandler south of the shed near a wood line.

JULY 7

Now, Bart and Krista Halderson are reported missing. The information provided at the time was that the couple was last seen at their home on July 1 and were planning a trip to Langlade County at the family's cabin.

According to the criminal complaint, police interviewed Chandler at the family's Windsor home that evening and the detective noticed that sections of the floor appeared to be missing, along with an outline half wall next to the door that was no longer there.

Chandler at this time explained to police why he thought his parents missing. He told police his parents were being picked up around 6 am on July 2 to go to their cabin in White Lake, but did not know who. He said his parents were gone before he woke up. Chandler said he last heard from his parents on July 4, when his mom texted him — that was allegedly the only communication he had with his parents over the course of their trip.

Chandler said he thought his parents were missing because they had not yet returned home on July 7 and calls were going to voicemail.

JULY 8

Several developments occurred on this day, and it would signal the first change in the investigation.

First, Chandler Halderson spoke to several news outlet about his parent's disappearance. He told 27 News similar information to what he told police: that his parents went to Langlade County with friends he didn't know and that they hadn't returned home.

In the background, the police investigation took a turn when "mutilated and dismembered" human remains were found on the property of Chandler's girlfriend's family in Cottage Grove.

That night, after another interview with police, Chandler was taken into custody for providing false information on a missing persons case. Police at that time called the disappearance of Bart and Krista "suspicious."

JULY 9

On this date, police announced that they had discovered human remains, calling them "unidentifiable."

JULY 10

According to the criminal complaint, the individual who saw suspicious activity in Columbia County came forward and reported what she saw, leading investigators to search the area.

JULY 11

The Dane County Sheriff's Office confirmed to 27 news that on this date a search warrant was executed at Bart and Krista Halderson's home in Windsor. As of July 15, investigators were still processing the home.

JULY 12

The previously "unidentified" human remains found in Cottage Grove were formally identified as belonging to Bart Halderson. Officials have not identified the date in which Bart died, and the criminal complaint states it could be between July 1 and 8.

Although Chandler had been placed on the scene of where the remains were found, he was still only in custody for providing false information and had a $10,000 bond in court.

Later that evening, Chandler's charges would change. Three new recommended charges were added: first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse and mutilating a corpse.

JULY 14

The lead police got of suspicious behavior led to a grim discovery: more human remains. At this time those remains still have not been identified by a medical examiner.

JULY 15

Chandler was formally charged in the death of his father, and now has a $1 million bail. He currently faces four charges: first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse, mutilating a corpse, and providing false information on a missing person's case.

Although, the prosecuting attorney said more charges are expected.

Krista Halderson is still considered to be a missing person. In the last news conference, police said they're "still optimistic that Krista is still alive and well."

Chandler Halderson charged in the murder of his father; more human remains found

Days after a 23-year-old Windsor man went to a rural Dane County property under the pretense of swimming, investigators found his father’s torso — gunshot, “mutilated and dismembered” — with tools including a saw nearby, according to a criminal complaint charging Chandler Halderson with the murder of his father.
More human remains, as yet unidentified, were found Wednesday near Sauk City. Investigators continue to search for Halderson’s mother.
Prosecutors alleged Thursday that Halderson has spun a “web of lies” in the investigation of his missing parents — Bart and Krista Halderson

Investigators found a bullet casing Tuesday in the Halderson family house in Windsor matching the ammunition used in a firearm a friend of Chandler Halderson gave him less than a month before his parents’ disappearance.

‘He wouldn’t look at me’: Eyewitness says Chandler Halderson acted oddly in remote area before human remains discovered

Dane County man tells 27 News a person he believes was Chandler Halderson acted oddly as he encountered him near a remote stretch of the Wisconsin River where authorities later discovered yet-to-be-identified human remains.

Gene Unger tells 27 News a Subaru wagon was parked near his home and a trail to a popular but somewhat concealed fishing spot and a man emerged from the station wagon.

"He wouldn't look at me," Unger tells 27 News of the driver. "He looked up, looked straight down, and kind of got out of the car, head down, then walked....don't know why he was walking, just to scope out whatever's here, turned around, grabbed his backpack, there's a trail here, goes to the park," Unger says.

Unger says the backpack was not bulging. But Unger tells 27 News who he now believes it was Halderson, missing equipment most visitors to the area bring.

"Most everyone takes fishing gear and a fishing pole, but he didn't have that," Unger tells 27 News. "So it was kind of odd."

In addition to being close to the Wisconsin River and on Old Highway 60, the wooded space the man entered is near thick, brush piles. Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett says the unidentified remains were found in this area.

Gene Unger says Halderson's car was parked near the trail to the lower river way for two to three hours.

Chandler Halderson's attorney says Halderson is an Eagle Scout who's also been involved with church activities. The only publicly documented friction between Halderson and his parents comes from the criminal complaint against Halderson. It states Halderson told detectives he angered his father before his parents' disappearance when he says he broke the home's fire place glass while throwing a ball to a family dog.

That excuse doesn't even make sense. Yeah so I killed my father and dismembered him.

Remains yet to be identified as friend fears for missing Windsor woman Krista Halderson

Dane County's medical examiner has yet to identify human remains found July 14 in the Town of Roxbury in connection to the disappearance of Bart and Krista Halderson of Windsor, and the wait for news weighs on the loved ones of the missing woman.

Last week, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett expressed hope Krista Halderson will be found alive and well. But Hanson fears his optimism is misplaced.
