Amber Alert issued for abducted 1-year-old Clarkston boy

A Levi's Call, Georgia's Amber Alert System for missing and abducted children, has been issued for a 1-year-old boy out of Clarkston, Georgia Wednesday morning.

Officials are asking Georgians to be on the lookout for Blaise Barnett.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Barnett was last seen wrapped in a blanket while wearing a black shirt with blue dinosaurs, a diaper, and no pants.

Investigators say around 1 a.m., Barnett was sleeping inside his family's SUV while they went to put some groceries away in their home. Though they were only gone for a moment, officials say someone stole the car with the toddler still in it.

The family believes the young boy is still in the vehicle, which is described as a 2002 grey or silver Ford Explorer with the temporary tag P2722946 and a "Tag Applied For" sign in the back window.

"He loves his mom. We can't even hold him without him wanting his mom. So we would really like for everyone to be on the lookout for my nephew," Chantene Miller told FOX 5. "He's loveable. He's probably crying right now because he doesn't have his mom."

Miller says the family will not press charges if Barnett is returned safely.

Blaise Barnett: Stolen SUV found, but 1-year-old still missing in Amber Alert

Authorities in DeKalb County said they have found the stolen SUV but not the child inside that sparked an Amber Alert.

Blaise Barnett was inside a grey 2002 Ford Explorer with “tag applied for” sign in the back window when it was taken in Clarkston. The tag number is: P2722946. It was found around 11:45 a.m. along Memorial College Avenue.

Clarkston police said the boy’s family was unloading groceries at 1000 Montreal Road around 1 a.m. Wednesday when the SUV was stolen with him still inside.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are searching for the boy.

The boy’s mother told Channel 2 Action News she went inside of her home for around 30 seconds and by the time she came back outside, her SUV was gone with Blaise inside.

“I ran downstairs and I’m like, ‘no not my baby, no,’” the boy’s mother said.

She said the car was unlocked but not running.

BREAKING: Stolen SUV found; Clarkston boy at center of Amber Alert still missing

Authorities have located an SUV stolen from outside a Clarkston apartment Wednesday morning, but the child taken with the vehicle is still missing, Channel 2 Action News reported.

DeKalb County authorities told the news station the gray 2002 Ford Explorer with paper tags was found along Memorial College Avenue around 11:45 a.m. It was being towed from the scene by a wrecker, according to footage from NewsChopper 2.

Clarkston police said an update on the case was forthcoming. We are working to learn more.

ORIGINAL STORY: It took maybe 30 seconds for the family of Blaise Barnett to take their eyes off the 1-year-old boy as they unloaded groceries Wednesday morning, and he was gone.

In that time, someone climbed into the driver’s seat of their gray Ford Explorer and took off with the toddler, wearing only a diaper and a black shirt with blue dinosaurs, still strapped in his car seat. An Amber Alert was issued for the child early Wednesday, and neither he nor his family’s vehicle has been located in the nine hours since.

“I just kept saying this is a dream. This just can’t be real,” his father, Xavier Barnett, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution from outside his Clarkston apartment as the search continued. “I just broke down. Please, bring him home. The car don’t even matter, just bring my son home.”

Blaise Barnett was reported missing at 1 a.m. from the Parc 1000 apartments at 1000 Montreal Road. According to a police report, Blaise’s parents were running bags of groceries to their apartment and returned to the parking lot to find their vehicle and their son gone. His father told police he carried his 3-year-old nephew inside first and was coming back for the toddler.

“He was in there for probably like 30 seconds, maybe, and within those 30 seconds he came back outside and the car was gone with Blaise in it,” Deonna Bray, the child’s mother, told the AJC.

The vehicle was not left running, but its keys were in the cupholder, according to the report. Blaise was strapped into a black and tan car seat and had a blanket wrapped around his legs, his parents told police.

The GBI issued the alert, known as a Levi’s Call in Georgia, on behalf of the Clarkston Police Department.

Mom's message to person who took 1-year-old: 'Don't be irritated by his crying, he's just a baby'

An Amber Alert was issued early Wednesday morning for a 1-year-old boy who was inside a family vehicle when it was stolen from an apartment complex in Clarkston, police said.

11Alive spoke to the boy's emotional mother who has a message for those responsible.

"We're not holding up too good, but we're trying," Deonna Bray said.

The 1-year-olds mother said the only message she has is to bring the baby home safely.

"If he's cold, just keep him warm. I know he's crying right now. Don't get upset at the crying. He's just a baby. He doesn't know what's going on. He doesn't know who you are. Don't get irritated. I beg you."

if the keys were in the cup holder, how did they get inside to put groceries away? I know not all people lock their doors, but it makes me wonder.

Blaise Barnett: 5 key points about the missing 1-year-old

1. Blaise’s mother says her SUV was stolen in seconds

Blaise’s mother, Deonna Bray, said the SUV theft happened in just 30 seconds.

“We got home maybe around 1 or 1:06, 1:10 maybe, we dropped our nephew at the house and the stuff that we had and we came back outside to get my baby, but as we come back outside, the car wasn’t out here. And he wasn’t out here,” Bray said. “It [the SUV] wasn’t running, it was unlocked because he was doing a quick trip so it wasn’t like he was in the house for too long, but the keys weren’t in the ignition at all. It was in the cupholder.”

2. The stolen SUV was found near where it was stolen

The missing SUV was found Wednesday afternoon near the Brannon Hills condos located off Memorial College Avenue, which is about an mile and a half from the boy’s home. The little boy and the car seat were missing at the scene. The SUV was taken to the GBI headquarters for evidence processing.

3. Blaise was wrapped in a blanket

Blaise was last seen wearing a green tank top with dinosaur print, a diaper and a blanket wrapped around his bottom half. His family is extremely worried about him staying warm in the cold temperatures.

4. The FBI is investigating

Law enforcement agencies across Georgia are teaming up to find Blaise. “The FBI is working with us. The GBI is working with us, along with our officers and local jurisdictions within DeKalb County,” Clarkston Police Chief Christine Hudson said.

If you see the child, you’re asked to call Clarkston police at 404-557-8956.

5. Family members are passing out flyers

Authorities are continuing their search for the boy Thursday, and Blaise’s family and friends vow to keep searching and praying for his safe return.

“We believe God and we’re going to have the glory and God is going to have the glory and we’re going to have the victory that God is going to bring baby Blaise home,” said family friend Courtney Chatman.

Searchers are circulating a flyer with the little boy’s face on it to neighborhoods in the area.

if the keys were in the cup holder, how did they get inside to put groceries away? I know not all people lock their doors, but it makes me wonder.
I keep my apartment keys and house keys and car keys on separate key chains. I often go down to the office or something in the building and lock my door when I do but I don't need my car keys on those occasions.

It seems odd if someone didn't know the child was in the car that it is the child that is still missing and not the car. A smart person would have left him somewhere he would be found quickly and safely. So the crook quickly found the keys in the car...? He apparently at some point realized a child was in the car... It seems more likely it may have been running, not sure why someone would take a chance on stealing a car that may not have keys or parents that may come back down in 30 seconds and catch them...

I am not saying anything nor doubting, I imagine there is grocery store video and all of the child on the trip. This is a late and dark hour to shop and leave a child outside in the dark in a car but I guess they felt that quickly, nothing would happen. Without judgment, it is a shame though they did not take both children up first...

Praying for this little guy but it's not good he has not been found nor found with the car...
