On July 19, 1972 the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in the eastern area of Hernando County, FL near Highway 50 and I-75. It is highly possible the woman had recently traveled from Alabama or north Florida. The white female is described as being 30 to 40 years of age, approximately 5`0" tall, 125-145 lbs., and short brown hair. She had six upper and six lower teeth. The woman was found wrapped in a bedspread with a distinctive pattern, possibly a "Pineapple Damask" print. There were three square corners and one rounded corner.

WBKO Investigates: Florida authorities make new discovery in cold case linked to Hopkins County

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WBKO) – Police in Hernando County, Florida, are hoping a new discovery will help them get closer to finding who murdered a woman from Hopkins County in 1972.

Authorities said they’ve identified Peggy Joyce Shelton’s remains after a forensic DNA company in Texas linked a living relative with the formerly unknown remains.

Shelton had connections to Hopkins County before she was murdered, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WBKO Investigates on Wednesday.

The body of an unidentified woman was found July 19, 1972, in the area of High Corner Road and Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville, Florida.

Following 50 years with no answers, police submitted forensic evidence to Othram Labs in The Woodlands, Texas, in 2022.

They identified the remains as Shelton’s after comparing the unknown DNA to a known relative.

“Othram’s in-house forensic genetic genealogy team then used the DNA profile to generate new leads in the case,” a news release said.

Police are continuing to investigate Shelton’s murder.
