Dodge County authorities search for missing woman; husband in custody

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a missing woman in rural Clyman and is asking the public to avoid the area and not join in the search.

Family say Crystal Rasch, 37, of rural Clyman, has not been in touch with anyone since June 11.

Rasch’s husband, Zachariah Rasch, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon and is being held in the Dodge County Jail on tentative charges of misappropriating personal identification materials. Crystal Rasch filed for divorce in September 2023 and said in court papers her husband had threatened abuse when she previously filed in 2019.

“The search continues in hope that we find Crystal and can return her to her family,” Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said during a press conference Thursday.

Husband of missing Clyman woman charged with using her debit card to purchase cleaning supplies, gloves

The estranged husband of a Dodge County woman who has been missing for two weeks used her debit cards to withdraw thousands of dollars in cash and purchase hundreds of dollars’ worth of cleaning supplies, drain cleaner, chemical-resistant gloves and other items, according to a criminal complaint.

Zachariah Rasch, 42, of Juneau, is the “prime suspect” in the disappearance of Crystal Rasch, 37, of rural Clyman, Dodge County Court Commissioner Steven Seim said.

According to a criminal complaint, a 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse registered to Zachariah Rasch was found on land owned by his family near Adams with “significant evidentiary value in the hereabouts of (a missing person) and is currently being analyzed by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab in Madison.”

At a press conference on Thursday, Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said authorities were searching for Crystal Rasch, but they did not want assistance from the public in order to preserve the integrity of any evidence that might be found.

Zachariah Rasch was charged Friday with seven counts of identity theft for financial gain. He was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon and is being held in the Dodge County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond.

Missing Dodge County woman's husband accused of financial crimes: complaint

The estranged husband of a missing Dodge County woman was arrested and charged with financial crimes relating to her money.

37-year-old Crystal Rasch from rural Clyman was last seen on June 11, and reported missing on June 23.

Zachariah Rasch, 42, also of rural Clyman, was arrested and charged with seven felony counts of Misappropriating ID Info to Obtain money, e.i., using Crystal's debit card to buy several thousand dollars worth of goods and make money withdrawals.

The majority of those goods purchased were cleaning products.

Missing person investigation

According to the criminal complaint, the missing person's report for Crystal started when dispatch got a call from Crystal's stepmother on June 23, who said she hadn't heard from Crystal since June 11 via text message. She said when she calls Crystal's phone, it goes straight to voicemail.

A Dodge County Sheriff's deputy talked with the stepmother, who said she stopped at Crystal's house and saw her vehicle parked in the garage. She was told by Crystal's mother that Crystal went to Michigan to see her brother, and didn't know if she ever got picked up.

The stepmother called the brother, and he said he had not seen Crystal. The stepmother told authorities she was worried as Zachariah Rasch had previously harassed her, and she wanted to make sure he did not do anything to her, per the complaint.

The deputy contacted several other friends and family members of Crystal. They all said they haven't had in-person contact with Crystal since June 10. However, several said they got Facebook messages allegedly from Crystal, although they believed that those messages were fake based on the tone of the comments and the language used. They also said the person purporting to be Crystal refused to accept any phone calls.

The deputy made several attempts to contact Crystal and was not able to ever speak to her on the phone.

At the same time, the deputy also contacted Zachariah Rasch, who said he had not contacted Crystal, and he had not seen her either. Law enforcement were made aware Crystal and Zachariah were going through a divorce.

The complaint goes on to say that through interviews, surveillance footage, and transaction data, it was discovered that Zachariah had made numerous purchases with Crystal's debit/credit card at the Beaver Dam Menards, Walmart, and several area Kwik Trips. He also used the debit card at Blain's Farm & Fleet in Watertown and the Watertown Ace Hardware.

Transaction records show that hundreds of dollars were spent on various cleaning supplies, including but not limited to: several bottles of drain cleaner, stain remover, carpet cleaner, upholstery cleaner, cleaning wipes, interior automotive cleaner, and chemical-resistant gloves.

Surveillance video shows Zachariah was alone for all transactions, per the complaint.

Interview with Zachariah

A Dodge County Sheriff's deputy met with Zachariah. He said he and Crystal each had separate bank accounts. They did not have any shared bank accounts, and they do not allow each other access their respective accounts. Crystal had filed for divorce, and they were not living together, per the complaint.

Zachariah denied taking any money from Crystal or using her bank check or credit card to purchase any items during the early hours of the interview session. Detectives showed him surveillance photos and transaction records of the Menards purchase on June 23. This was over a week after he said he last contacted her.

According to the complaint, Zachariah ‘sat quiet for a period of time staring at the photo’ and stated eventually that he could not remember, but later admitted he was lying to us and had been using Crystal's account to make unauthorized purchases without her consent.

Search warrant executed

A search warrant was executed on Zachariah's home on June 26, related to the identity theft.

Several receipts from the aforementioned stores were found, along with more than $3,000 in cash money.

Cell phone pings

According to the complaint, investigators conducted emergency phone pings on the two phone numbers that belonged to Crystal, who had two phones.

One of the phones last pinged on June 8th in Junuea.

The other phone showed activity on June 17, and also showed an outgoing call on June 10, at 10:55 a.m. that hit a cell tower near State Highway 13 in Adams, Wisconsin.

Search in Adams County

According to the Adams County Sheriff's Office, Zachariah has connections to two separate parcels of land in the Town of Springville.

Due to the size of the area, a statewide request for assistance was made to other law enforcement agencies. On June 26 and June 27, nearly 100 law enforcement officers from 28 departments searched those parcels of land.

A 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse registered to Zachariah Rasch was found. That vehicle has ‘significant evidentiary value’ in the whereabouts of Crystal, and is currently being analyzed by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab in Madison.

Latest on the search and investigation

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the disappearance of Crystal Rasch and while it remains a missing person investigation, the sheriff's office is also treating this case in which a serious felony has likely been committed.

If anyone has information related to the location of Crystal Rasch, they can call the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 920-386-4590.

Been through many a small town and have heard of most towns and cities in WI but never of Clyman. Population 388. I can tell you Dodge has a prison/correctional facility and so he will have just a short ride to prison. Pretty clear what happened here.

Another dumbarse and I can about guarantee if divorce had been in the works, they were both ordered not to use or charge on the other's accounts, so again dumbarse PLUS he buys cleaning supplies and such with them.

STEPMOTHER raised the alarm it sounds like but her own mother thought she went to visit her brother? Did HE tell her that or where did she get that and clearly not true, unless she was planning such but he killed her before she could.

Seems highly unlikely she isn't dead and I'm surprised it isn't be treated like or called a homicide. IF I have it right they found his newer car hidden on this land he has connections to...?

Yeah a real bright one is this idiot.

I pray she's alive but it seems highly unlikely unless he just got in a mood to clean his drains and more.

DODGE COUNTY, Wis. - The Dodge County Sheriff's Office is now investigating the disappearance of Crystal Rasch, last heard from on June 11, as a death.

Rasch, 37, was not reported missing from rural Clyman until June 23. Last Friday, the sheriff's office said her husband, Zachariah Rash, was arrested for using his wife's financial accounts without her permission.

The sheriff's office said no details regarding the death will be released due to a "very active investigation." The family asked not to be contacted.

The investigation into a missing Clyman woman has now been classified a death investigation, the Dodge County Sheriff's office said Wednesday.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the disappearance of Crystal Rasch "but has determined the case is no longer a missing person investigation but has transitioned to a death investigation," Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said in a statement on Wednesday.

Sad. I can't say I'm surprised. It's far more often the case than not. That it is the significant other--the spouse, the bf, the recently broken up with ex, or one of those.

Scott always does a number of cases on one video. This one is 32 minutes in.

Others are Epstein, Read, Dylan Rounds, whose murderer got CONSECUTIVE sentences, SUSAN SMITH, twice I've seen her in the news now, maybe more, I'm not finished yet but almost.

I’m really glad they have enough evidence to go ahead and make an arrest.

Crystal Rasch's remains found on estranged husband's property, complaint says

Crystal Rasch’s remains, including a tooth used to identify her, were found in a burn pit on the property of her estranged husband, according to a criminal complaint charging him with first-degree intentional homicide.

Zachariah Rasch, 43, is also charged with hiding corpse in the death of Crystal Rasch, 37. He is being held in the Dodge County Jail with a $250,000 cash bond and faces life in prison if convicted of the first-degree homicide charge.

According to the criminal complaint filed Friday in Dodge County Court:

The Dodge County Sheriff Office began the investigation at the home of Crystal Rasch on June 23. A cell phone found on her nightstand and a calendar had dates crossed off, with the last date crossed off on June 9.

The sheriff’s office contacted Zachariah Rasch at his residence at N3251 Wood Road in Juneau. Zachariah Rasch said at the time he did not know where Crystal Rasch was.

Deputies identified both Crystal Rasch and Zachariah Rasch in a surveillance video at the Oconomowoc Goodwill on June 11 when the two arrived at the store. They shopped separately but left together after making purchases at 11:30 a.m.

Crystal Rasch filed for divorce in September 2023 and said in court papers her husband had threatened abuse when she had previously filed in 2019. He terminated his parental rights were terminated on June 17.

A search warrant was executed at Zachariah Rasch’s Wood Road home on June 26. A cell phone and multiple vehicles were taken by authorities. A second search warrant was conducted on property owned by Zachariah Rasch’s family in Adams County. Rasch’s 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse, the vehicle that was used while visiting the Oconomowoc Goodwill, was found on the property. Blood splatter was found on and around the passenger seat. The blood matched the DNA profile of Crystal Rasch.

Law enforcement believe the vehicle was parked at the Wood Road location from June 11 until it was moved to the Adams County property on June 24.

Zachariah Rasch was arrested on June 26 after law enforcement returned to the Wood Road location, where an area of the property had been cleared out with visible burn residue on the ground. There was signs that the area was recently made into a burn site and had been recently used. Bone from a human skull was found in the burn site. A number of other human bones were located during excavation of the site, including a tooth. The tooth matched the dental records of Crystal Rasch.

A search of Zachariah Rasch’s cell phone found Google searches beginning on April 4 questioning if police can locate an IP address. In May, a search sought information about the difference between shooting someone in the head or the chest, and June 6 searched asked about widow benefits. Google searches in June asked about carpet cleaners, animals that eat bones and replacement passenger seats for the Mitsubishi Eclipse. Several searches in June in the days leading up to his arrest inquired about sulfuric acid, missing people in Wisconsin and warrants in Wisconsin.

Zachariah Rasch also was identified through video as the person who allegedly used Crystal Rasch’s debit card several times at stores and ATMs in Beaver Dam, Watertown and Juneau. Items purchased included drain cleaner, a portable air cooler and multiple cleaning supplies and items for a vehicle, as well as chemical-resistant nitrile gloves.

There were also five ATM withdrawals totaling $6,500 from Crystal Rasch’s account for the purchases and the withdrawals.
Crystal Rasch and Zachariah Rasch no longer lived together and had separate bank accounts. Crystal Rasch’s car remained parked at her house.
Crystal had two phones, one last used on June 8 and the other used on June 17 in Wisconsin Dells, where Zachariah Rasch’s family owns land.

A preliminary hearing for Zachariah Rasch is scheduled for Oct. 3.

At the property, in Clyman Township, investigators discovered a suspicious area outside that appeared to be burned, WISN reported. Within that charred patch, something stuck out to investigators — a tooth. They looked closer and continued finding more evidence, mostly tiny bits of bone, fragments that survived intense heat.

A look at dental records revealed the tooth belonged to Crystal Rasch, the station reported.

Investigators also found a vehicle belonging to Crystal Rasch’s husband on his family’s land in Adams County, according to The Daily Citizen. The passenger seat was spattered with blood that matched Crystal Rasch’s DNA, authorities said.

Officials didn’t say how they believe Crystal Rasch died, or what may have motivated her husband to kill her.

The investigation remains “open and active,” the sheriff’s office said.

I'm glad they found her! Now when is the arrest for murder going to happen? Looks like they are only charging him with concealing a corpse.

Bond Set At $1-Million For Clyman Man Charged With Homicide

Cash bond has been set at $1-million-dollars for a Clyman man charged with First-Degree Intentional Homicide. The charge against Zachariah Rasch also comes with a domestic abuse enhancer and he is also facing a felony count of Hiding a Corpse.

During a preliminary hearing, the court found probable cause to bind the 43-year-old over for trial.

Dodge County authorities announced a missing persons search for Crystal Rasch of Clyman in late June, but they later classified the case as a death investigation. Zachariah Rasch was originally arrested at that time on numerous counts of alleged Unauthorized Use of an Individual’s Personal Identifying Information.

Investigators said a search of Crystal’s financial records showed numerous transactions had taken place and Zachariah was reportedly responsible. Those charges were ultimately upgraded to Homicide in September.

Zachariah Rasch has an arraignment hearing scheduled for November 5th.

Pretty high bond for WI. It isn't seen a lot. All I have to say. See such a little more in some parts, not that high but higher in some cases. Still rare. Tell me he is likely toast and they have a lot. or they know unlike most in the state, they know it has some national attn but not really that much. I haven't seen it elsewhere so go back to my original statement, ti's that serious of a case. And now that's all I have to say and I am not saying it to anyone, just expressing an opinion.
