Daniel Knight killed by Winter Park, FL police

Here we go again :sigh:
Another case where functional body cams would have told the real story.

Might want a thread on this one.

I wonder if any wedding guest or videographer was taking video.

It is difficult here to be sure of anything yet thanks to no body cam as you said and there is no excuse for that. More than one officer and no body cam working?? Really... That alone perhaps should be chargeable or officers dismissed over it these days. Imo.

On the other hand, I sense a little whitewashing in here. No bruises, misunderstanding, both of these things seem to hint at there was something that happened but they are saying what happened was not the way the cops describe. Additionally, family said an officer was not knocked unconscious but not said an officer was not attacked, etc. Someone called this man in and I'd like to hear what that person has to say as to why.

Too early to judge as right now it is he said/they said, no video, no body cam.

I'm sure both sides are embellishing the story. Hopefully there is video taken by somebody. That would be weird in today's world if there wasn't. I'm pretty sure video will tell most of the story. Yes, somebody called 911 for some reason or were they just stirring drama? I am also sure IF an officer was actually knocked unconscious there would be video of some sort of that, too. I sure can't understand the refusal to demand to wear a body cam.

I hadn't watched the video yet when posting. They are pretty vehement this was unasked for. His sister said they pretty much came in and went right for him aggressively. The sister tells them in no uncertain words to STOP lying.

The advocate guy or whoever he is says there is video of him dancing just moments before but I don't see what that will tell anyone (if before) and I wonder if any video was kept going then...? They don't mention that.

I agree on the body cam. I believe the guy also said they are required to wear them and operate them in Winter Park so what happened here...? Yet the officers did have a call for help they were responding to... So yes, there is more to the story yet no doubt...

The incident started around 10 p.m. at the Winter Park Event Center on Morse Boulevard.

Officials say there was a large wedding underway with about 200 guests.

Police say Knight was a wedding guest when he was "trying to fight other guests," and the police were called.

When officers arrived, Knight knocked one officer unconscious.

“The subject then physically attacked the second arriving officer, as the crowd

began to surround the injured officers. During the physical altercation, the officer discharged his weapon,” a release states.

Knight was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Both officers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. They've been released from the hospital.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Officials say the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty as standard procedure.

Well, really only one thing known for sure and it as @Guess Who said in the beginning, let's say the officers are telling the truth (not saying they are by any means) then body cams would put it to rest and prove it but we amazingly have body cams that were not working or on.... Well darn it right?

Hard to have an opinion being no real facts or proof yet but I would suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle between both "camps"...

But that body cam thing puts doubt on the officers right out of the gate imo...

and "not functioning" is totally different than it was a department that didn't have them. This is equipment failure, whether it's deliberate or an actual equipment malfunction. How long and how often did this happen would be my question. I also don't quite believe the family's statement of everything was all hunky-dory and no reason why cops were called.

I don't either. I think something happened in the family and at the wedding. I think there is a whitewashing going on by at least one or two in the wedding/family... The "no bruises" sounds to me like an abused women who later wants to drop charges who says no, no, really it wasn't that bad, look I have no bruises... I was upset with him... He didn't mean it...

BUT what is with the cops? IF true, I'm sure it was said Winter Park Police had body cams and were required to use them routinely. There is more than one officer by far here. And NONE work? If you are an honest cop, protect yourself and run it.... So "not functioning?"... NONE were functioning? You and I agree on this subject in many cases.

I don't think personally there is any excuse nowadays not to have cameras always in courtrooms, interrogation rooms, body cams running on police, etc. always ON, even if not publicly shared unless necessary, required, etc. Seriously, what is the reason for NOT HAVING that? There is only one reason in my opinion for the most part, it is because the sh*t that goes on wouldn't be able to go on any longer if there was proof of it...

But, to be fair, there are a lot of unknowns here yet.

I think there was reason to likely call in, and the fact he ended up dead left the one(s) calling in or having someone call in very upset that they just wanted it stopped and some help with the situation but that he ended up dead... Total speculation of course on my part as we really don't know anything yet.

But short of a real provable failure, the cops made a HUGE mistake not having body cams on if required, and have left themselves wide open for this...
