State police reopen 1983 cold case involving missing man

The Michigan State Police have reopened a cold case involved a man reported missing in 1983.

On March 7, 1983, David Robert Gionet was reported missing. He was last seen leaving a party at a house on the Green Lake Peninsula on March 3, 1983, at 5:30 a.m. Witnesses at the time saw Gionet walking along the roadway back to his residence. Before leaving the
party, he had talked about walking across the partially frozen lake to make his walk home shorter.

He never made it home.

Divers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) and Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office searched Green Lake for several days following Gionet’s disappearance, but his body was never recovered.

It was reported that Gionet was afraid of water and couldn’t swim. Witnesses told investigators Gionet had already taken his ice shanty off the lake due to the abnormally warm weather and the ice not being suitable any longer. This information makes it more unlikely he attempted to walk across the lake.

Gionet was 18 when he disappeared. He had longer brown hair, hazel eyes, and wore prescription glasses. He is between 5’3” – 5’5” and weighed between 125-135lbs.

The MSP has reopened this case and have collected new information related to Gionet’s disappearance. Anyone having any information is asked to contact the MSP Cadillac Post at (231) 779-6040.
