California Highway Patrol looking for missing child taken from North Carolina

California Highway Patrol officials are seeking the public’s help to find a 5-year-old girl taken from North Carolina by a former family member and likely taken to California.

Authorities said on April 3, her grandmother's ex-husband took Faith Leigh Harris, 84-year-old Orion Douglas Memmott.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina contacted CHP after learning that Memmott and the child likely flew to California. An "Endangered Missing Advisory" issued by the CHP focused on San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, and Butte counties.

A former tax attorney, Memmott, was charged in 2014 with tax fraud. He was sentenced that year to 18 months in federal prison for attempted tax evasion and subscribing to a false tax document, according to KHSL TV.

Memmott, a Stanford Law School graduate and tax attorney, stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from investors and law firm clients to spend on his expenses, including failed day trading, travel, and personal trainers, according to trial testimony.

Some of this money was removed from a client’s medical trust, leaving her destitute and homeless. Memmott concealed the embezzled money through nominee accounts and false statements to investors, clients, and the IRS, the Department of Justice reported.

Memmott also concealed his real estate holdings and rental income from IRS collection agents seeking to collect more than $650,000 in unpaid taxes for 1993-1999.

“For years, Mr. Memmott acted as if his law license placed him beyond the reach of the law,” said U.S. Attorney Wagner in 2014. “Today, in sentencing Mr. Memmott to prison, the Court made clear that attorneys who commit crimes should not expect special treatment.”

“Mr. Memmott misused his position and defrauded friends, clients, and the government out of hundreds of thousands of dollars,” said IRS-Criminal Investigation Acting Special Agent in Charge Thomas McMahon. “Attorneys are trusted with the confidence of others and are expected to uphold the law and pursue justice with integrity. Those who intentionally cheat by not paying their taxes should know they will not go undetected and will be held accountable.”

Anyone who sees Memmott or Harris is asked to call 911.

Makes me think of Murdaugh. An attorney. Thought he was beyond touch. Stole from clients leaving them destitute. This, however, was a very long time ago and I don't see how it relates to him taking this child nowadays or what it could possibly have to do with it. Other than showing of course he is not an angel.

A 5-year-old girl allegedly taken by her grandmother’s 84-year-old ex-husband has been found.

The girl was found at 5:15 a.m. Thursday, according to the CHP.

4/13/2023 -- BCFAC News -- Suspect Orion "Doug" Memmott is in custody at Colusa County Jail being held without bail on an out-of-state warrant. He was booked at 2:38 AM this morning.

His victim, Faith Harris (5) was recovered safely, according to CHP which tweeted the following at 5:15 AM Thursday morning.

This Endangered Missing Advisory has been deactivated. The victim has been safely located.

Details regarding Memmott's arrest were not provided.

Apparently grandma was in on it. I don't really get it. Did she want her "temporary custody" to turn into "full custody"? She apparently contacted him and he flew out to get her.

The grandmother of a 5-year-old who was reported missing from North Carolina and found in Colusa County was arrested and charged with child abduction, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the grandmother, Donna Harris, and her ex-husband, Orion Memmott, were arrested and charged with child abduction.

The 5-year-old was taken from Harris’ home, deputies said. They said Harris had temporary custody of the child.

On Monday, the Lincoln County Department of Social Services contacted the sheriff’s office about a child who was taken from the home on April 2.

Deputies said Harris had contacted Memmott and he flew to North Carolina and returned to California on April 3 with the child.

Memmott was booked into the Colusa County Jail without a bond. Harris was booked into jail on a $20,000 bond.

Five-year-old Faith Lee Harris has been found safe after being taken from her grandmother’s home. The grandmother, Donna Jean Miles Harris, had temporary custody of the child while the case was in court.

Memmott was arrested and placed in the Colusa County Detention Center where he is being held without bond. Memmott and Donna Harris were each charged with felony abduction of a child. Harris was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $20,000 secured bond with a District Court appearance scheduled for May 4.

Well this one was far from clear. I thought the EX came and took her from grandma without grandma's permission or knowledge. So grandma was part of it and asked him to. And she had temporary custody. Well that's far from what it seemed like. And now she is charged? How can she be? There must have been conditions like the child can't be taken out of state or grandma can't put her in the care of him or someone else. Or some such thing.

And if you had permission to take the child from the person that had custody, how is it kidnapping???

Yeah it is odd isn't it?

She only had temporary custody per previous posts. I can only guess it came with conditions like not taking her out of state or maybe not allowing grandpa to be around her, etc. Maybe they had custody and CPS ended up involved and it was due to him but they granted her temp custody if she agreed to keep her away from him. This of course is all speculation on my part as they have shared no details on this case that makes no sense with the little we know.

Or she hoped for permanent custody but was in a battle for it with someone and once she had temp custody she had grandpa take her out of state and they planned on taking her and moving and hiding her and keeping her from someone...?

It just doesn't make sense as it stands...

Who actually reported her missing or how did it all come about that she was....?

Lincoln County investigators said the Department of Social Services contacted them Monday about the girl being taken from the home. The DSS worker said the girl was taken on April 2, and the grandmother, Donna Harris, had reached out to 83-year-old Orion Douglas Memmott, her ex-husband, in California.

That's rather vague too isn't it? And I did read the article at the link. It sounds to me like she got temporary custody and her next move/plan was to take the girl and take off, ending whatever custody battle or CPS thing was going on, I just don't get why she didn't go as well....

It absolutely isn't clear that she reported to DSS, just that DSS says this is what the grandmother did, reached out to him to take her. So did they find something out and then find that out or she admitted to it...? They are vague and leaving things out/wording things oddly in this one. Imo.
